A Dog-Friendly Swiss Adventure: Geneva, Montreux, Glacier 3000, and Gstaad with Crazy Daisy

dog friendly Switzerland

Switzerland is a dream destination year-round, but exploring it during the holiday season with a furry friend elevates the experience to magical heights. Our journey began in Geneva, continued to the lakeside charm of Montreux, and culminated in the breathtaking alpine wonders of Glacier 3000 and Gstaad. With my beloved Shih Tzu, Crazy Daisy (and auntie Cheryl), in tow, we uncovered the best of Swiss hospitality, scenic beauty, and pet-friendly experiences. Here’s everything you need to know for your own adventure.

Geneva: The Gateway to Switzerland

Our Swiss adventure kicked off in Geneva, where the airport is seamlessly connected to the Swiss rail network. After a smooth flight, we stepped off the plane and onto a train platform within minutes—talk about efficiency! If you’re planning to travel by train, we recommend checking the direction of your train in advance to avoid any last-minute confusion. With open first-class tickets in hand, we had the flexibility to board any train and enjoy extra space and comfort.

Traveling with Daisy was surprisingly simple. As long as she was in her carrier (but she was also good without as we found out!), she rode for free. For larger dogs or those outside carriers (and over 10/12kg), the fare is half the price of a second-class ticket (approximately €18). The train ride to Montreux took about 1 hour and 20 minutes, gliding past Lake Geneva and snow-capped mountains. Pro tip: Sit on the right side of the train for lake views and consider heading upstairs for an even better vantage point.

Montreux: A Lakeside Holiday Haven

Arriving in Montreux, we were delighted to find our hotel the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic, right across the street from the train station. After navigating the elevator and a 1 minute walk, we checked into a luxury room where Daisy received a star’s welcome. The staff greeted her warmly, provided a dog bed and bowls, and printed our bus passes without us even having to ask.

While our room was slightly smaller than expected (based on our previous stay), the stunning lake views made up for it. After settling in, we headed to 1820 Restaurant for dinner. The staff welcomed Daisy, who happily lounged by our table. We started with a bruschetta trio—an absolute 10/10, though we recommend asking for extra balsamic. Cheryl enjoyed a beautifully prepared sea bass with black truffle sauce (8.5/10), while I savored a warm goat cheese salad (a perfect 10/10). Whispering Angel rosé and a velvety Pinot Noir completed the meal.

Christmas Eve: Festive Markets and Magical Moments

The next morning, we woke to clear skies—a welcome change from the rain the day before. After a leisurely breakfast in bed, we ventured to the Montreux Christmas Market, which was brimming with holiday cheer. Daisy, ever the social butterfly, charmed locals and tourists alike. The market’s highlight was Santa flying across the lake—a unique spectacle that happens only on Christmas Eve at 4 and 5 PM. Be sure to time your visit accordingly!

Lunch at a waterfront pop-up restaurant gave us a chance to relax before heading back to the hotel for Daisy’s power nap. Later, we attempted to enjoy the Fairmont’s terrace but found that indoor seating was off-limits for dogs. While the wine and service were excellent provided by Cecilia, sitting outside in the cold dampened the experience.

Christmas Day: Lakeside Strolls and Relaxation

Christmas morning began with a room-service breakfast of fresh pastries, eggs, and tea. Energized, we took a scenic walk along the lake, capturing stunning photos and hosting a TikTok live session where Daisy shared her travel tips. The paths were quiet, providing a serene escape before the day’s festivities.

Despite some hiccups—like being unable to enjoy the hotel terrace due to the cold—we found joy in the little moments. Dinner that evening was another highlight, featuring our beloved bruschetta trio and a perfectly cooked steak. The holiday menu, while tempting, couldn’t compete with our favorites from the à la carte options.

Glacier 3000: A High-Altitude Adventure

The day after Christmas, we embarked on a journey to Glacier 3000, a must-visit for breathtaking alpine views and thrilling experiences. The panoramic cable car ride to the summit offered spectacular vistas, and Daisy, snug in her carrier, seemed just as awestruck as we were. Highlights included the Peak Walk suspension bridge and glacier trails, though these might not be ideal for all pets. Make sure to bundle up—it’s significantly colder at the top!

The experience was unforgettable, from the sweeping views of the Alps to the exhilarating sense of being on top of the world. For those seeking adventure, activities like snowshoeing and sledding are available, though we opted for a leisurely exploration.

Gstaad: Swiss Elegance and Charm

FFrom Glacier 3000, we made our way to Gstaad, a picturesque village that perfectly embodies Swiss luxury and charm. Its iconic chalets, boutique shops, and cozy cafes made it a delightful stop. Gstaad is exceptionally pet-friendly, with many outdoor seating areas welcoming dogs. Daisy, as always, stole the show wherever we went.

One of the standout moments in Gstaad was visiting The Mansard, a chic rooftop bar and restaurant at the Miiro Hotel. The atmosphere was stylish and inviting, and the panoramic views of the surrounding Alps made it a breathtaking experience. The food here was, without a doubt, the best of our entire trip. Every dish was meticulously prepared, bursting with flavor, and served with impeccable attention to detail. Whether you’re indulging in a multi-course dinner or just enjoying cocktails on the rooftop, The Mansard is an absolute must-visit when in Gstaad.

The village’s laid-back vibe was the perfect contrast to the high-altitude excitement of Glacier 3000. We strolled the car-free streets, indulged in local delicacies, and soaked in the festive atmosphere, with The Mansard becoming a highlight of our visit.
