Flying to Sweden with a dog
Sweden is the one nobody expects. You have to declare your dog to customs even coming from another EU country, and not declaring can cost you entry.
The one that catches people out
You must declare your dog to Swedish Customs
This catches people because it feels like it shouldn't apply inside the EU. It does. Travelling to Sweden with a dog on an EU pet passport, you have two choices: declare online with Tullverket before you travel, then walk the green lane with your notification number ready in case you're asked, or don't declare in advance and report at the red lane at the border. What you cannot do is walk out green having told nobody. An undeclared animal can be refused entry.

Before anything else
Microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination
The order matters more than the dates. If the dog was vaccinated before it was chipped the vaccination is invalid, the vet has to redo it after chipping, and a fresh 21-day wait starts from there.

Rabies vaccination, then the wait
Counted from the completion of the primary vaccination course, not from the date you book. A booster given after the previous one expired counts as a new primary vaccination, so the 21 days start again. Under EU Regulation 2026/131, which replaced 576/2013 in April 2026.

Issued by an authorised vet, recording the microchip and the current rabies vaccination.

Online with Tullverket beforehand, which lets you use the green lane, or in person at the red lane when you land. Keep the notification number with the passport.

Sweden doesn't require the Echinococcus treatment. Worming is recommended but voluntary.
Breed rules in Sweden
There's no ban on any specific breed in Sweden. An individual dog that behaves dangerously can be restricted, but nothing is barred on breed alone.

What happens when you land
Coming straight from the US, land only at Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter, and you must report the dog to customs, or it can be refused or, in the worst case, put down. Go to the red channel and tell a customs officer, or declare online first and use the green lane with your number ready. Fill in form E9.204. Carry the EU health certificate stamped at your EU entry point, the chip and rabies records. No tapeworm rule for Sweden.

Book on the airline’s own site. Always.
Your dog has to be added to the booking and confirmed against a limit that applies per flight, not per aircraft, and a third-party seller generally can’t do either of those things. People book somewhere cheaper, find there’s no way to add the dog, and end up trying to change a ticket the airline never sold them. When a flight is cancelled or a connection goes, you want to be talking to the airline, not to a reseller who is talking to the airline on your behalf.
