Where can my dog actually go?

Austin earns the reputation, and then some. Thirty hotels on our list take dogs, seven charge nothing at all, and five run dining menus written specifically for dogs. We have not found another city with five.

The five are worth naming. The Four Seasons has a main called Hungry Like a Wolf and lets dogs eat with you on the Ciclo patio, for no fee. Lake Austin Spa Resort has a chef-written dog menu with a turndown treat each night. Hotel Magdalena on Music Lane runs a full in-room dining menu for dogs. Commodore Perry Estate does a dog menu alongside a plush bed and an estate bandana. The Otis, up by the university, adds Woofgang Bakery cookies and a record-player-shaped dog bed.

South Congress is the best-value corner of the city. Hotel Saint Cecilia and Hotel Magdalena both take dogs of any size for twenty-five dollars a night, which is the cheapest luxury dog rate we have come across anywhere. The South Congress Hotel charges nothing and takes dogs in the lobby, the bar and on two restaurant patios. Saint Cecilia even allows them poolside, on a private gated acre. Worth knowing it has no lifts.

The geography is what makes Austin work. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail runs ten miles around Lady Bird Lake, and Auditorium Shores on the south bank is a proper off-lead park with lake access. The Hyatt Regency sits directly on the trail. The LINE and the Loren step onto it. If you want trees instead, the Renaissance out at the Arboretum opens onto the Cathedral of Oaks paths, and Omni Barton Creek has a dog-friendly nature trail on its own four thousand acres.

Two cautions. Indoor dining is out almost everywhere under Texas health rules, so plan around patios rather than expecting to sit inside. And weight caps swing wildly: fifteen hotels publish no limit at all, while the Omni and Fairmont stop at 25 lb and the Otis at 30 lb.

What happens when you get there

Menus written for dogs
Five of them, which we have not seen anywhere else. The Four Seasons, Lake Austin Spa Resort, Hotel Magdalena, Commodore Perry Estate and The Otis all put a dog menu in the room or on the patio.
Hotels that charge nothing
Seven. The LINE, the Thompson, the Hyatt Centric and 1 Hotel all take two dogs free. The South Congress Hotel is free. The Westin Downtown is free up to 70 lb and the Four Seasons free up to 60 lb.
Weight limits
Fifteen hotels publish no cap at all, including Saint Cecilia, Magdalena, the South Congress Hotel, Hotel Ella, Van Zandt, ZaZa, the LINE, the Stephen F Austin and Lake Austin Spa. At the other end, the Fairmont and Omni stop at 25 lb, the Otis at 30 lb, the Westin at the Domain at 40 lb and the Loren at 45 lb.
Eating together
Indoor dining is out almost everywhere under Texas health rules, so think patios. The Four Seasons takes dogs on the Ciclo patio with water and biscuits. The South Congress Hotel has the bar plus the Cafe No Se and Maie Day patios. The LINE has Alfred Coffee and Veracruz Tacos. The Thompson has its coffee shop patio, the Loren its ground-floor cafe patio, and the Fairmont's rooftop bar is dog-friendly. Saint Cecilia allows dogs poolside.
Lady Bird Lake
The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail runs about ten miles right around the lake and is the centre of dog life in Austin. Auditorium Shores on the south bank is off-lead with lake access, and Festival Beach off-lead sits further east. The Hyatt Regency is on the trail, the LINE and the Loren step onto it.
Out of town
Worth the drive if you want space. Omni Barton Creek has its own dog-friendly nature trail across four thousand Hill Country acres. Lake Austin Spa puts dogs in Garden Cottages with lake frontage. The Renaissance opens onto the Cathedral of Oaks greenbelt paths. Commodore Perry has a walled ten-acre garden in the middle of the city.
Leaving the dog in the room
Better here than most US cities. Commodore Perry, Lake Austin Spa (crated), Omni Barton Creek (crated), the Hyatt Centric, the W, the Omni Downtown, the Hilton and ZaZa all allow it in some form. The LINE, Four Seasons, 1 Hotel, the Westin, Hotel Ella, the Fairmont, ARRIVE, Colton House, Archer and the Renaissance do not.
The heat
June through September, walk at dawn and after dark. Pavement downtown gets hot enough to hurt paws by late morning and the lake trail has long unshaded stretches. The Arboretum and Barton Creek are the shadiest options in the city.
Best walks
The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail right around Lady Bird Lake, Auditorium Shores off-lead park on the south bank, Festival Beach off-lead area to the east, the Cathedral of Oaks paths through Great Hills Park at the Arboretum, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, and Blunn Creek Nature Preserve behind South Congress.
When to go
March to May and October to November. Summer in Austin is punishing for a dog, with pavement hot enough to burn paws through the middle of the day, so if you come between June and September plan everything around dawn and dusk and stay near the lake or out under the oaks.
