What happens when you get there

Königssee boats

Every dog on the Königssee boats wears a muzzle unless it's in a closed carrier, assistance dogs excepted. Listed fighting dogs aren't carried, dog trailers usually aren't, and staff can turn away a wet dog, so don't let the dog swim just before boarding. The Obersee at Salet is served until 11 October 2026.

Other lake boats

The Tegernsee, Starnberger See and Ammersee boats have no general muzzle rule. Dogs must be supervised and not roam free on board or on the piers, and a dog that bothers other passengers goes on a lead. The Chiemsee boats and the Chiemsee-Bahn carry dogs on a lead for a small fee, and staff can ask for a muzzle at any time.

Zugspitze and the lifts

Dogs are allowed throughout the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn's lifts and buildings, EUR 8 on the cable cars and the cog railway. There's no muzzle rule, though one is recommended in the big cabins and on the rack railway. Skip the steel staircase on the summit terrace, it can hurt paws, and use the lift or the inside stairs.

Castles

Dogs can't go inside Neuschwanstein and there's no dog-minding service, though they can walk the outside grounds on a lead. At Herrenchiemsee, dogs can't enter the palace or museums, must be on a lead on the island, and can't ride the carriages. Plan for one person to wait outside, or book a LakeDogs sitter through Überfahrt or Egerner Höfe on the Tegernsee.

Where dogs can swim

On the Tegernsee, the Popperwiese dog beach at Schorn in Rottach-Egern, where dog swimming is expressly allowed, and the dog beach at the Seeuferanlage in Gmund. There's a designated dog beach on the Forggensee near Füssen, the Grubsee near Krün, and the Starnberger See from Marina Bernried's promenade. Most organised lidos keep dogs out, which is a handful of named places per lake, not a lake-wide ban.

Leads

Schwangau has a lead rule across the whole municipality because it's ringed by nature reserves. The Tegernsee towns require a lead and some promenades and centres are signed dog-free. Berchtesgaden National Park asks for dogs on a lead, and on the Alm keep well clear of cows with calves.

Beer gardens

The beer garden is the easiest place to sit down with a dog in Bavaria. DAS TEGERNSEE takes dogs in its beer garden, AMERON in the Schloss Bräustüberl, and Gut Ising on the Derby bar and grill lawn. Hotel restaurants are much stricter, so a dog under a beer-garden table is the easy dinner.

On the Tegernsee, the Ganzheitliche Tierarztpraxis Tegernsee is at Rosenstraße 17 (not 24 hours). Around Garmisch, Berchtesgaden and Füssen, ask your hotel for the nearest emergency vet.

Best walks

The Alpsee circuit, about 6 km, from the door of AMERON below Neuschwanstein, and the Alpenrosenweg through the woods toward the Schwansee. The 10 km route along the Weissach dam toward Scharling from Rottach-Egern, the Neureuth mountain walk above Tegernsee town, and the Popperwiese and Gmund dog beaches. In Garmisch, the Michael-Ende-Kurpark in the centre and the forest paths on the Graseck toward the Eckbauer and Wamberg. On the Chiemsee, the shore promenade at Übersee and the Gut Ising estate forest. On the Starnberger See, the lakeshore path north from Leoni to the King Ludwig II chapel and cross at Berg.

When to go

Late spring to early autumn for the boats, the lifts and the dog beaches. Summer brings the crowds at Neuschwanstein and the Königssee, and Staudacherhof, Relais Chalet Wilhelmy and Das König Ludwig all limit their dog rooms, so book early. The Königssee's Obersee boats stop after 11 October 2026.
