Where can my dog actually go?
Biarritz is the friendliest French seaside town we've researched. Fifteen of seventeen hotels take dogs, and the palace at the top sets the tone. Hôtel du Palais leaves a cushion and bowl in the room and welcomes dogs in Le Salon, Bar Napoléon III and La Terrasse. Le Garage, a converted Belle Époque car garage, gives a bed and a toy on arrival. Jules Verne lets dogs everywhere except the pool and restaurant. Alfred Port-Vieux charges nothing.
The beach is the catch, as everywhere on this coast. The Grande Plage and Miramar ban dogs from 1 April to 30 September, Port-Vieux and the Côte des Basques from May, and off-season access is evenings and early mornings only. The year-round answer is the leashed promenade to the Rocher de la Vierge, the Lac Marion dog park, and Anglet's beaches, which allow dogs off the lead from 1 November to 1 April.
Château du Clair de Lune, four kilometres out, has an eight-hectare park and bowls in the room if you'd rather grass than sand.
