Where can my dog actually go?

Burgundy is easier with a dog than the wine-country image suggests. France is one of the best countries in Europe for a dog at the table, and on the terraces of Beaune and Dijon a dog under your chair is completely normal. Most of the four and five-star hotels on the Côte take dogs, and the Voie des Vignes gives you a flat, car-free path through the vineyards from Beaune to Santenay and from Beaune all the way to Dijon. Twenty-eight hotels on our list take dogs, clustered in Beaune, the villages of the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits, and Dijon.

What separates them is where the dog can go once you're inside. Mama Shelter Dijon is the clearest yes in the region, with dogs in the Mama restaurant and on the Patio bar and no charge at all. Le Richebourg in Vosne-Romanée calls its restaurant pet friendly as well as its rooms, which is rare for a Côte de Nuits dining room. Hôtel de la Poste in Beaune lets dogs on a lead go anywhere in the hotel except the restaurant, and sets out bowls and water before you arrive. Les Sources de Vougeot has the fullest written rules, and they're mostly a no outside the room: not by the pools, not in the Caudalie spa and not in the Clos de la Tour restaurant. The gastronomic dining rooms are where Burgundy draws the line. Le VIII at Château la Commaraine doesn't take dogs either.

Fees run from nothing at Mama Shelter and the Hôtel Abbaye de Maizières inside Beaune's ramparts, through EUR 12 at La Villa Fleurie, EUR 15 a night at Castel de Très Girard and EUR 20 at Hôtel de la Poste and Château de Melin, up to EUR 30 a day at Les Sources de Vougeot and EUR 60 a night at Les Deux Chèvres in Gevrey-Chambertin, which is the top of the range by some way. L'Hôtel de Beaune sets its fee by the size of the dog. None of these hotels publishes a weight limit, so ring ahead with a big dog. The best base for one is Hôtel Villa Louise in Aloxe-Corton, where every room category takes pets and the garden rooms open straight onto the lawn.

Know the no before you plan the days. The Hospices de Beaune don't admit dogs, only guide and assistance dogs, and that's the one most visitors hit. L'Instant Beaun'Heur at Merceuil, just south of Beaune, offers to mind and walk your dog while you go in, which solves it neatly. Several well-known hotels are a flat no: COMO Le Montrachet, Bellevigne in Chambolle-Musigny, Les Rêveries du Clos in Pommard, and Chapeau Rouge and La Cour Berbisey in Dijon. There's nothing on our list in Chablis, and one hotel in Vézelay.

What happens when you get there

The Hospices de Beaune
Dogs aren't admitted inside the Hôtel-Dieu, only guide and assistance dogs. Either take turns or book L'Instant Beaun'Heur at Merceuil, which offers to mind and walk your dog while you visit. Ask them about the price when you book.
Wine cellars
Most cellar visits are underground tastings, so ask first. Patriarche in Beaune lists only guide and assistance dogs. Plan on the Château du Clos de Vougeot being a no as well and check at the gate. Small domaines in the villages are often relaxed about a calm dog in the tasting room, but ask when you book.
Dogs in restaurants
Dogs on café and wine-bar terraces are normal in Beaune and Dijon. Hotel gastronomic rooms mostly say no in writing: Le VIII at Commaraine, Le Clos de la Tour at Les Sources de Vougeot and the restaurant at Hôtel de la Poste. Mama Shelter Dijon and Le Richebourg are the exceptions.
Trams and buses in Dijon
Divia bans animals across its buses and trams, except small pets in a closed bag, basket or cage on your lap. A medium or large dog can't ride, so pick a Dijon hotel you can walk from.

Many others take dogs without publishing a fee.
Room rules
Some hotels only take dogs in certain rooms. Les Deux Chèvres keeps them to the Superior Pet Friendly rooms, Château de Melin to the room categories marked pets allowed, and Château de Challanges doesn't take dogs in its second-floor rooms, where there's no lift anyway.
Getting there
Driving is the practical route with a dog. From Calais it's about seven to eight hours to Beaune by the A26 and A5 or A31, so Champagne makes an easy first night. Dijon's airport has no regular scheduled flights, and the TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon reaches Dijon in under two hours.
Swimming
There are no beaches. Beaune Côte Plage at Montagny-lès-Beaune is a paying family bathing site open June to September and its page says nothing about dogs, so don't count on it.
Best walks
The Voie des Vignes is the walk of the region, more than 80 km of flat shared path linking Beaune to Santenay, Santenay to Nolay and Beaune to Dijon through Aloxe-Corton, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, so keep a lead on for the bikes. The Chemin des Grands Crus runs alongside on foot for 87 km from Dijon to the Maranges. Above Gevrey, the Combe Lavaux-Jean Roland nature reserve takes dogs on a lead. In Beaune, loop the ramparts and head out to the Parc de la Bouzaise. In Dijon, the Jardin Darcy, the Parc de la Colombière, the Jardin du Port du Canal and the 30 hectares around Lac Kir all admit dogs, and the Canal de Bourgogne towpath up the Ouche valley is flat and quiet.
When to go
Late spring and early summer are the easiest months, before the heat. In high summer the afternoons in the vines are exposed, with very little shade on the Voie des Vignes, so walk early. Harvest runs from September into October and fills the vineyard tracks with tractors and pickers. The Hospices wine auction weekend in November books Beaune out, so plan well ahead or stay in Dijon.

No hotel on our list publishes a weight limit, so ring ahead to be sure. Hôtel Villa Louise in Aloxe-Corton is the best base, with every room category open to pets and garden rooms that open onto the lawn, and the hill of Corton behind the village.

Should I stay in Beaune or Dijon with a dog?+

Beaune if you want the vineyards on foot, with the ramparts, the Voie des Vignes and hotels like Hôtel de la Poste and Abbaye de Maizières inside or on the ring. Dijon if you want restaurant access and parks, with Mama Shelter, the Jardin Darcy and Lac Kir. In Dijon, a bigger dog can't use the trams or buses.

Can dogs go on wine tastings in Burgundy?+

Ask first every time. Patriarche in Beaune lists only guide and assistance dogs, and most cellar visits are underground. Small family domaines in the villages are often happy with a calm dog in the tasting room, but nothing is published, so ask when you book.

Are there dog-friendly hotels in Chablis?+

Not on our list at the moment. For the Yonne, the one hotel we list is Hôtel de la Poste et du Lion d'Or at the foot of the hill in Vézelay. Everything else is on the Côte and in Dijon.
