The Cape and the islands look made for a dog, and for most of the year they are. Both island ferry companies carry dogs free, the Cape Cod Rail Trail takes dogs, and the National Seashore lets a dog on a lead onto its ocean beaches. Summer is where it tightens. Beach access is set town by town, the Seashore closes its lifeguarded sections and five shorebird stretches, and the resorts double their dog fee. Fourteen hotels on our list take dogs: six on Nantucket, three in Provincetown, three on Martha's Vineyard, and one each in Falmouth and Harwich.
What separates them is where the dog is allowed to be, and the inns do better than the resorts. Brass Lantern Inn on Nantucket has a gated dog run and lets you carry breakfast out to the patio and garden with your dog. Palmer House Inn in Falmouth serves breakfast on the porch in season so the dog can join you, and has a dog run behind the firepit. Pilgrim House in Provincetown allows dogs on its outdoor patio and deck in the warmer months, though not in the indoor dining room. Wequassett in Harwich opens all its outdoor spaces to dogs on a lead and keeps them out of the pools and dining areas. The Nantucket Hotel and Winnetu both keep dogs out of the restaurant, fitness area and pool area, and Crowne Pointe keeps them out of its restaurant and bar.
Fees split the same way. Wequassett charges USD 200 a night from Memorial Day to 30 September and USD 100 a night the rest of the year. The Nantucket Hotel and Winnetu charge USD 200 a night plus tax from June to September and USD 100 outside those months. The inns sit around USD 50 a night: Brass Lantern per dog, Crowne Pointe, Pilgrim House and Palmer House. The Brant charges USD 100 per pet per stay and Mansion House a USD 75 cleaning charge per pet. Weight limits run from 35 lbs (about 15.9 kg) at Pilgrim House to 65 lbs (about 29.5 kg) at Brass Lantern and under 90 lbs (about 40.8 kg) at Wequassett. For a big dog, Veranda House, Regatta Inn and Chapman House on Nantucket take two dogs of any size, and Crowne Pointe and The Brass Key in Provincetown each take one dog with no size limit.
Some well-known names here don't take dogs, so don't assume. The Wauwinet on Nantucket does not permit pets, Chatham Inn accommodates service dogs only, and Land's End Inn in Provincetown has recently changed its policy and no longer takes dogs. 76 Main and 21 Broad on Nantucket don't allow pets either. We also have nothing on the list yet for Chatham, Hyannis, Brewster, Sandwich, Orleans or Oak Bluffs. And if you're booking one of the three Nantucket inns above, they quote USD 50 per night per pet in one place and USD 175 per stay in another, so confirm the fee when you book.

What happens when you get there
- National Seashore beaches
- Dogs are allowed on the Cape Cod National Seashore's ocean beaches on a 6 foot lead, except on lifeguarded beaches in summer and in the shorebird closures. Those closures run 1 April to 15 October at five named places: the right side of Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Marsh in Eastham, Jeremy Point and Great Island in Wellfleet, and Hatches Harbor and the north-west part of Herring Cove in Provincetown. That is five stretches and the guarded sections, not the whole Seashore, so in summer a dog on a lead can still use the unguarded beach either side of a lifeguarded section.
- National Seashore trails and ponds
- Dogs are allowed on all the fire roads and on two walking trails only, the Doane Trail in Eastham and the Pilgrim Spring Trail in Truro. The Head of the Meadow bike trail takes dogs all year, and the Province Lands and Nauset bike trails take them from 1 November to 30 April. The freshwater ponds are open to dogs from 16 October to 14 May. Every other walking trail and the Seashore trams are off limits.
- Town beaches
- Each town on the Cape sets its own beach dates and hours for dogs, and they differ from town to town. Check the town's own page for Provincetown, Falmouth, Harwich or wherever you're staying before you head for the sand, and don't carry one town's rule over to the next.
- Nantucket
- Nantucket has a leash law. The Nantucket Land Bank allows dogs on the beaches and trails of its own properties and asks you to pick up after them. For the town's beaches, check the town's own page for your dates. Brass Lantern Inn points guests to Sanford Farm, Sanford Farm West and Tupancy Links for walks, reached by the shuttle towards Madaket.
- Martha's Vineyard
- The Martha's Vineyard Land Bank sets a dog rule property by property. Roughly 57 of its 73 properties take dogs all year, among them Chappy Point Beach and Poucha Pond Reservation. Eight take no dogs from April to September, including Tashmoo Preserve, Great Rock Bight Preserve and Tisbury Great Pond Beach, and seven never take dogs, including Felix Neck Preserve and Aquinnah Headlands Preserve. Look up the property you plan to walk, and check each town's own page for its beaches.
- Ferries
- The Steamship Authority carries pets free. They must be on a lead or in a container and under your control, and they aren't allowed in food service areas or on seats and tables. Hy-Line Cruises also carries pets on its island ferries at no fee, on a lead or caged and off the furniture, with one exclusion, the Captain's View section of the Nantucket ferry Grey Lady IV.
- Fees
- USD 200 a night in summer and USD 100 off season at Wequassett, The Nantucket Hotel and Winnetu. USD 50 a night at Crowne Pointe, Pilgrim House and Palmer House, and USD 50 per day per dog at Brass Lantern. USD 100 per pet per stay at The Brant and a USD 75 cleaning charge per pet at Mansion House. Veranda House, Regatta Inn and Chapman House quote both USD 50 per night per pet and USD 175 per stay, so confirm when booking. The Brass Key and The Hob Knob don't publish a fee.
- Leaving your dog in the room
- Not allowed at Brass Lantern, Palmer House Inn or Pilgrim House, and the three Nantucket Resort Collection inns ask that dogs aren't left alone. Wequassett, The Nantucket Hotel and Winnetu allow it if the dog is crated, and Mansion House if the dog is crated and quiet. Plan dinners around that, because most of these hotels keep dogs out of their indoor dining rooms.
- Best walks
- On the Cape, the Cape Cod Rail Trail takes dogs through six towns and runs to about 25 miles. In the National Seashore, the fire roads, the Doane Trail in Eastham, the Pilgrim Spring Trail in Truro and the Head of the Meadow bike trail are open to dogs on a lead, as are the unguarded ocean beaches outside the shorebird closures. In Falmouth, Palmer House Inn points guests to Falmouth Dog Park, The Knob and the Beebe Woods trails. Thompson's Field in Harwich is the local nature walk near Wequassett. On Nantucket, Sanford Farm, Sanford Farm West and Tupancy Links are the long walks out towards Madaket, with Brant Point Light and the harbour front in town. On Martha's Vineyard, Mansion House names Owen Park Beach and Veteran's Field Park in Vineyard Haven, and the Land Bank's Chappy Point Beach and Poucha Pond Reservation take dogs all year.
- When to go
- From mid-October the Seashore gets much easier with a dog. The shorebird closures end on 15 October, the freshwater ponds open to dogs from 16 October to 14 May, and the Province Lands and Nauset bike trails open to dogs from 1 November to 30 April. The resort dog fee also halves outside summer, from USD 200 to USD 100 a night after 30 September at Wequassett and outside June to September at The Nantucket Hotel and Winnetu. June to September is the hardest stretch: lifeguarded Seashore beaches are closed to dogs, each town's own beach rules need checking, and the resort fees are at their peak. Mansion House and Veranda House are open all year, but many Cape and island hotels are seasonal and a lot of Nantucket shuts in January, February and March, so check the hotel is open before you plan around it.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Cape Cod and the Islands
Is Cape Cod dog friendly?+
Yes, with a summer catch. Fourteen hotels on our list take dogs across the Cape, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, the island ferries carry dogs free and the National Seashore allows dogs on a lead on its ocean beaches. In summer the lifeguarded Seashore beaches close to dogs and each town sets its own beach rules, so check the town's own page before you go.
Can dogs go on Cape Cod National Seashore beaches?+
Yes, on a 6 foot lead, on the ocean beaches outside the closures. Dogs aren't allowed on lifeguarded beaches in summer or in the shorebird closures, which run 1 April to 15 October at five named places in Eastham, Wellfleet and Provincetown. The unguarded beach either side of a lifeguarded section stays open to dogs on a lead.
Are dogs allowed on the ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard?+
Yes, and they travel free on both the Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises. Dogs must be on a lead or in a container and kept off seats and furniture, and the Steamship Authority keeps them out of food service areas. Hy-Line excludes pets from the Captain's View section of the Grey Lady IV on the Nantucket route.
How much do Cape Cod and island hotels charge for dogs?+
The resorts charge USD 200 a night in summer and USD 100 a night off season, which covers Wequassett, The Nantucket Hotel and Winnetu. The inns are mostly USD 50 a night, including Brass Lantern, Crowne Pointe, Pilgrim House and Palmer House. The Brant charges USD 100 per pet per stay and Mansion House a USD 75 cleaning charge per pet.
Where should I stay on Cape Cod or the islands with a big dog?+
Veranda House, Regatta Inn and Chapman House on Nantucket welcome dogs of all sizes and take two per room. In Provincetown, Crowne Pointe and The Brass Key each take one dog with no size limit. Wequassett in Harwich takes dogs under 90 lbs (about 40.8 kg). Avoid Pilgrim House, which caps at 35 lbs (about 15.9 kg), and note that The Nantucket Hotel and Winnetu cap single rooms at 35 lbs and larger accommodations at 75 lbs (about 34 kg).
Which hotels let my dog join me for breakfast or dinner?+
Brass Lantern Inn lets you take breakfast out to the patio and garden with your dog, and Palmer House Inn serves breakfast on the porch in season. Pilgrim House allows dogs on its outdoor patio and deck in the warmer months. Wequassett, The Nantucket Hotel, Winnetu and Crowne Pointe keep dogs out of their restaurants and dining areas. Veranda House, Regatta Inn and Chapman House don't publish a breakfast rule, so ask.
Are dogs allowed on Nantucket beaches?+
Nantucket has a leash law, and the Nantucket Land Bank allows dogs on the beaches and trails of its own properties. That covers Land Bank land only. For the town's beaches, check the town's own page for the dates you travel.
Can I take two dogs to a hotel on Cape Cod or Nantucket?+
Brass Lantern Inn, Veranda House, Regatta Inn, Chapman House and The Brant all take two, and all five are on Nantucket. Crowne Pointe, Pilgrim House, The Brass Key, Palmer House Inn, The Nantucket Hotel and Winnetu take one dog. Brass Lantern also has a breed list, which rules out Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Dobermans, Huskies and several others.
Do any well-known Cape Cod or Nantucket hotels not take dogs?+
Yes. The Wauwinet on Nantucket does not permit pets, and 76 Main and 21 Broad don't allow them either. Chatham Inn accommodates service dogs only. Land's End Inn in Provincetown used to take dogs and has recently changed its policy, so it no longer does.
