Where can my dog actually go?

Chamonix is one of the easiest mountain towns in Europe to do with a dog, as long as you know which lifts say yes. Twelve of the seventeen hotels Fora lists here take dogs, and a few of them go well past a room and a fee. The Hameau Albert 1er leaves a welcome kit in the room and charges nothing. The Excelsior has a dog play area, treats at reception and lets dogs into the restaurant. Lykke lets them into the bar and restaurant outside buffet hours.

The catch is up high. Dogs ride the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace on a lead at half fare and can walk the whole site, ice cave included. They ride the Planpraz gondola too. They do not ride the Aiguille du Midi cable car, either section, and they aren't allowed at Lac Blanc or anywhere in the Aiguilles Rouges reserve, even on a lead. Plan the glacier day, not the summit day.

Down in the valley it's all walkable. The Arve riverside path runs through town, Parc Couttet is the quick green break, and the Petit Balcon Sud trail starts above the Brévent lift for a proper morning out.

What happens when you get there

Montenvers train
Dogs allowed on a lead at half fare, and across the whole Mer de Glace site including the ice cave. The metal grating stairs down to the cave can hurt paws, so carry a small dog or bring booties.
Aiguille du Midi
No dogs on either section of the cable car, assistance dogs only. Same for the Index chairlift above Flégère. Every other lift in the valley takes dogs.
Nature reserve
Lac Blanc and the Aiguilles Rouges reserve are closed to dogs even on a lead. Fines apply.
Muzzles
Category dogs must be muzzled on public transport and the conductor can refuse boarding.
Seasonal closures
Several hotels close for part of the autumn. Hameau Albert 1er is partly closed mid-September to early December, Le Prieuré closes in November.
Best walks
Arve riverside path through town, Parc Couttet for a quick break, Petit Balcon Sud above the Brévent lift, and the Lac des Gaillands loop at Les Bossons.
When to go
June to September for the trails, December to April for snow. Shoulder weeks in October and November are quiet but some hotels shut.

Can dogs go on the Aiguille du Midi cable car?+

No. Neither section of the Aiguille du Midi takes dogs, only certified assistance dogs. Take the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace instead, which allows leashed dogs at half fare.

Can dogs go on the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace?+

Yes, on a lead, with a half-price ticket. Dogs are allowed across the whole Montenvers site including the ice cave. The Bar des Glaciers puts out water bowls.

Which Chamonix hotels let dogs into the restaurant?+

The Excelsior at Les Tines allows dogs inside the restaurant at dining times. Lykke allows them in the bar and restaurant when there's no buffet. Hôtel Mont-Blanc allows dogs in the bar. Most others keep dogs to the rooms.

Is there a free dog-friendly hotel in Chamonix?+

Le Hameau Albert 1er charges no pet fee and prepares a dog welcome kit in the room. Hôtel Le Morgane and Les Aiglons charge EUR 10 a night.
