Where can my dog actually go?

The Cinque Terre works for a dog on foot, and less well as a place to sleep. The park's trails are open to dogs on a lead, and the Sentiero Verde Azzurro from Monterosso to Vernazza and Corniglia is the walk most people come for. But the paths are narrow and steep, the villages are packed in high season, and the rooms are mostly the wrong kind for a dog.

So the list is short, and that's on purpose. Only three hotels are on it. The five villages are almost all rooms-to-rent and small B&Bs, and most of them don't take pets. In the villages themselves, La Torretta and La Piramide in Manarola and Casa Cato in Vernazza are a no. The practical way to do this coast with a dog is to base yourself in Levanto or Portovenere and go into the villages for the day by train or boat.

Of the three, Hotel Al Terra di Mare in Levanto has the best access story. Dogs come to breakfast with you, outside the buffet room, and they're welcome in the pool area apart from the fenced area around the pool itself. Hotel Porto Roca is the one four-star inside the five villages with a written dog policy, up on the cliff above Monterosso. Grand Hotel Portovenere, on the harbour front at the far end of the gulf, takes one small dog in selected rooms and can book a dog-sitter for you.

Fees are EUR 20 a night at Al Terra di Mare and Porto Roca, and EUR 45 a night at Grand Hotel Portovenere. Weight is where it gets tight. Portovenere takes small dogs only, Porto Roca takes small and medium dogs, and Al Terra di Mare publishes no weight limit, which makes it the pick for a big dog. Ring ahead with your dog's weight all the same.

One more thing to know before you go. Dog rules on the regional trains that link Levanto, the five villages and La Spezia aren't published here, so check at the station before you rely on the train. The Cinque Terre Card pages don't mention dogs at all.

What happens when you get there

Trails: Dogs are allowed on the park's trails, but always on a lead. They can't roam free anywhere in the park, because of the wildlife and because the paths are often narrow and steep. That rule covers the whole path network, including the Sentiero Verde Azzurro.
Via dell'Amore: The Riomaggiore to Manarola path has reopened with booked, timed, one-way entry from Riomaggiore, about 30 minutes end to end. In 2026 it's open 9:00 to 21:00 until 24 October, then 9:00 to 18:00 from 26 October. There's no separate published dog rule, so expect the park's lead rule and ask the park if you want more before you book a slot.
Cinque Terre Card: The Trekking Card covers the Sentiero Verde Azzurro, the Via dell'Amore and the village buses, at EUR 10 a day for an adult or EUR 15 on peak days. The Treno Card adds unlimited regional trains between La Spezia and Levanto, at EUR 22, EUR 29.50 or EUR 35 a day depending on the crowd band. Neither card mentions dogs or a dog fare.
Trains: The train is how most people move between Levanto, the villages and La Spezia, but the dog rules for it (fare, lead, muzzle, busy-hour limits) aren't published here. Check at the station before you travel, and carry a lead and a muzzle.
Beaches: Summer dog rules for the town beaches at Monterosso, Levanto and Portovenere aren't published here, so ask your hotel or check the signs on the sand. Hotel Porto Roca's own beach doesn't take dogs from 1 June to 30 September.
Getting there: Pisa and Genoa are the nearest airports. If you're driving, park at Levanto or La Spezia, because the villages are largely car-free.
Heat and crowds: The trails are exposed and hot in July and August, with narrow paths shared with a lot of walkers. Go early in the morning in summer, carry water for the dog, and turn back if the path is jammed.
Vets: We don't have a 24-hour vet listed here yet. Ask your hotel for the nearest practice when you arrive, before you head out on the trails.
Best walks: The Sentiero Verde Azzurro from Monterosso to Vernazza, and on to Corniglia, on a lead the whole way. From Levanto, the seafront promenade and the climb over Punta Mesco to Monterosso. In Monterosso, the old-town lanes down to the sea and along the Fegina promenade. In Portovenere, the harbour front from the quay to the church of San Pietro on its rock, then up through the lanes to the Doria castle. The Via dell'Amore from Riomaggiore to Manarola is a short, flat option if you can get a timed slot.
When to go: Spring and autumn. In July and August the trails are hot and exposed, and the narrow paths and crowds are hard work for a dog. The park prices its card by crowd band, which tells you when the busy days are. Porto Roca's beach is closed to dogs from June to September anyway, and the Via dell'Amore switches to shorter winter hours from 26 October.

Is Cinque Terre dog friendly?+

For walking, yes. Dogs are allowed on the park's trails on a lead. For staying, it's thin. Only three hotels are on our list, because the villages are mostly rooms-to-rent that don't take pets, so base yourself in Levanto or Portovenere and go in for the day.

Can dogs walk the Cinque Terre trails?+

Because there aren't many hotels. The five villages are mostly rooms-to-rent and small B&Bs, most of which don't take pets, and very few real four and five-star hotels publish a dog policy. We'd rather list three we can stand behind than pad the page.
