Where can my dog actually go?

Colmar is an easier city with a dog than its reputation suggests. The old town is small, flat and almost entirely pedestrianised, so you can walk from the Unterlinden to the Petite Venise quays without crossing a fast road, and the Lauch towpath gives you a proper riverside loop straight off the doorstep. Eighteen hotels on our list take dogs, across Colmar itself and the wine route villages around it.

What separates them isn't the fee, it's whether anyone will tell you where the dog can go. Of the eighteen, exactly one answers that in writing, and it's out in Riquewihr. Best Western Plus Le Schoenenbourg states on its own French page that dogs are welcome in the rooms and the bar, not in the breakfast areas, the restaurant or the wellness rooms, and that reception needs telling if a dog is left alone. Hôtel Le Colombier in Petite Venise does the next most useful thing and will bring breakfast to the room, which solves the December buffet problem whether or not the dining room says yes. La Maison des Têtes puts dogs in the rooms facing its private courtyard and takes two. Everywhere else in Colmar publishes a fee and nothing about access at all, so ask by name when you book.

Fees run from nothing at Le Schoenenbourg up to EUR 55 a day at Le Chambard in Kaysersberg, which is a fifty-euro spread inside a twenty-minute drive, and the expensive end is not the end with the better access. Hôtel Maison Turenne is the lowest four-star in Colmar at EUR 10 a night, the Mercure Unterlinden and Novotel Suites are EUR 12, Hôtel Quatorze EUR 15, La Maison des Têtes and Le Maréchal EUR 20, James Boutique EUR 25, and L'Esquisse and both Colombier houses EUR 30. Château d'Isenbourg charges EUR 20 for the whole stay rather than per night. For a big dog, Hotel KLE in Kaysersberg is the pick, with two dogs of any size at EUR 10 a day in a limited number of dog rooms, and Le Schoenenbourg publishes no limit either.

Two traps. The first is the Christmas markets, because the village ones do not run to Christmas. Only Colmar, Eguisheim, Turckheim and Munster are open over the Christmas week itself, and Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, Ribeauvillé, Bergheim and Neuf-Brisach all finish on or before 20 December. A wine route itinerary built for the days after that arrives to closed squares. The second is the villages themselves, where the prettiest addresses are the ones that say no. Hostellerie du Château on the square at Eguisheim, and both Le Clos Saint Vincent and the Hostellerie des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre at Ribeauvillé, don't take dogs, and Villa Élyane in Colmar doesn't either. In practice that means basing in Colmar and driving out, which is worth deciding before you book rather than after.

What happens when you get there

The Christmas market dates
Colmar's six markets run 23 November to 29 December 2026, Eguisheim and Turckheim to 30 December, and Munster every day from 21 to 31 December. Riquewihr and Kaysersberg both finish on 20 December, Ribeauvillé runs only two weekends in early December, Bergheim ends on 6 December and Neuf-Brisach on 13 December. If your trip is the week of Christmas, Turckheim is the easiest village to add, ten minutes from Colmar with its own station.
Dogs at the markets
Neither the Colmar market organiser nor the tourist office publishes anything about dogs at the Christmas markets, in either direction. There's no permission and no ban on record, so ring the tourist office on +33 3 89 20 68 92 rather than assume. The stalls are open-air in public squares, but Colmar also runs covered venues where food hygiene rules usually apply, and the evening crowd density is the real constraint for a small dog whatever the rule turns out to be.
Village hotels
The wine route is the weak spot. Hostellerie du Château at Eguisheim is the hotel everybody photographs and it doesn't take dogs, and Ribeauvillé's two most characterful addresses both refuse. What's left at four star and above is Le Schoenenbourg and Hotel KLE out on the route, and Hostellerie des Deux Clefs at Turckheim as a three-star. Most people end up basing in Colmar and driving out.

Free at Le Schoenenbourg in Riquewihr. EUR 10 a night at Hôtel Maison Turenne, Hotel KLE and the Deux Clefs, EUR 12 at the Mercure Unterlinden and Novotel Suites, EUR 15 at Hôtel Quatorze and Val-Vignes. EUR 20 at La Maison des Têtes and Le Maréchal, EUR 25 at James Boutique, EUR 30 at L'Esquisse and both Colombier houses. Château d'Isenbourg is EUR 20 for the stay. The Grand Hôtel Bristol adds a one-off EUR 15 cleaning charge on top of its EUR 20 a night. At the top end, Le Chambard at Kaysersberg is EUR 55 per dog per day and publishes nothing about where the dog may go for it, and Resort Barrière Ribeauvillé is EUR 35 a night plus a EUR 150 deposit charged per night rather than per stay, which on four nights is EUR 600 held.
Weight limits and two dogs
Nobody in Colmar publishes a weight cap, and Hotel KLE and Le Schoenenbourg both state outright that there isn't one. For two dogs, KLE, La Maison des Têtes and Château d'Isenbourg all take a pair. The Mercure Colmar Centre Unterlinden is one dog per room only.
Leaving the dog in the room
Le Schoenenbourg allows it as long as reception is told. Hôtel Le Colombier Suites is a clear no at any point, so if you want an evening out that one rules itself out. Most other hotels here publish no rule either way, which means ask rather than assume.
Getting there
EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is about an hour south and the only nearby airport with a real route network, with 33 scheduled airlines. The terminal is split between France and Switzerland, so which side you arrive on changes the customs channel, and that's worth checking before you book a flight with a dog. Colmar sits on the TER Grand Est line from Strasbourg, Sélestat, Mulhouse and Basel, and Turckheim has its own station, but SNCF's own page on travelling with an animal couldn't be read when we checked, so confirm the current fare and carrier rules on sncf-connect.com rather than trusting an old figure. No dog policy is published for Colmar's TRACE buses.
Vets
No Colmar veterinary practice could be confirmed from a source we could reach, and the only veterinary address that surfaced is a departmental laboratory rather than a clinic. Ask your hotel for the nearest out-of-hours practice at booking, which is what you'd have to do on arrival anyway. Worth doing before a Christmas trip, when half of everything is shut.
Best walks
In Colmar itself, the Lauch towpath through Petite Venise is the flat riverside loop and the Parc du Champ de Mars is the main green space, directly across the road from L'Esquisse and four or five minutes from the Unterlinden market. Out on the wine route, the Schoenenbourg grand cru trail climbs behind Riquewihr, the Brand trail climbs out of Turckheim, the path to the three ruined castles of Dagsbourg, Wahlenbourg and Weckmund starts above Eguisheim, the Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre trail starts at Ribeauvillé, and the vineyard tracks at Saint-Hippolyte climb towards Haut-Koenigsbourg. All open access, all on lead, and all better in December than a summer photograph makes them look. Colmar's own municipal lead rules couldn't be found published anywhere, so keep her on the lead in the parks.
When to go
May to September for the quays, the terraces and long vineyard days. December is the reason most people come, and it works with a dog if you plan around the crowds rather than into them, so walk the markets early in the day and keep the Champ de Mars in reach for the evening. Just check the dates before you build an itinerary, because Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, Ribeauvillé, Bergheim and Neuf-Brisach all finish by 20 December while Colmar runs to the 29th. Several Alsace hotels close in deep winter, and Le Clos Saint Vincent at Ribeauvillé is shut for the season entirely.
