Where can my dog actually go?

Cologne works for a dog because of the Rhine. Both banks have long walkable promenades, the Rheingarten runs right below the old town, the Rheinpark sits across the Hohenzollern Bridge in Deutz, and the Inner Green Belt curves round the west side of the centre. Trams and buses carry dogs free on a short lead. Eight hotels made the list, five of them in the Altstadt and the cathedral quarter, with the rest at the Rheinauhafen, the Mediapark and the airport.

What separates them is where the dog can go once you leave the room, and in Cologne the only rules anyone publishes are restrictive. Hotel Mondial am Dom keeps dogs out of all its dining areas, breakfast included. Neither CityClass hotel, the 25hours The Circle, the Novotel, the NH Collection nor the Wasserturm sets out a rule for the restaurant, bar or breakfast room, so ask by name. Outside the list, the Excelsior Hotel Ernst doesn't allow dogs in the Hanse Stube, where breakfast is served, or in taku, though reception will mind the dog while you eat. Don't assume the German habit of dogs everywhere applies to Cologne's hotel restaurants.

Fees are low by luxury standards. EUR 15 a night at the Leonardo Royal by the airport and EUR 15 a day at the Novotel by the Rheinauhafen, EUR 19 a night at both CityClass hotels, EUR 20 a night at the Mondial and the 25hours, and EUR 35 per pet per night at the NH Collection Mediapark. The Wasserturm charges a EUR 25 non-refundable fee, so confirm whether that's per night or per stay. The Wasserturm takes dogs up to 35 kg, the biggest allowance in the centre, which makes it the pick for a big dog. The NH Collection stops at 25 kg but takes two.

Three warnings. The Cologne Marriott, the Savoy, Hotel Stern am Rathaus and Hotel Ludwig don't take pets. Cologne Cathedral has charged for sightseeing since 1 July 2026, with tickets booked through koelner-dom.de, and no dog rule for the cathedral is published, so ask before you plan around it. And Deutsche Bahn states no pets, assistance dogs excepted, on trains to or from the UK or Ireland, so you can't come by rail from London with a dog. The usual route is the car ferry or Eurotunnel by car.

What happens when you get there

Christmas markets
The cathedral market, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz all run 16 November to 23 December 2026. The Altstadt market by the Heinzels Wintermärchen runs 23 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, the Stadtgarten 13 November to 23 December, the Rheinauhafen harbour market 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and Chlodwigplatz and the MediaPark 19 November to 23 December. No dog rule is published for any of them. With a dog, go on a weekday in daylight and favour the smaller ones, the harbour, Chlodwigplatz or the Eigelstein Winterzauber (2 to 6 December only), over the cathedral or the Stadtgarten on a Saturday evening.
Trams and buses
On KVB trams and buses dogs travel free, though there's no legal right to take one. They must be supervised and on a short lead, and dogs that could endanger other passengers must also wear a muzzle. Dogs can't sit on seats. Other animals need a suitable container.
Deutsche Bahn
Dogs up to house-cat size travel free in a carrier under the seat or in the rack. Larger dogs need their own half-fare ticket, booked as traveller type Hund, and dogs outside a carrier must be on a lead and muzzled. No seat reservations for dogs and no pets in the restaurant or bistro car. DB states no pets, assistance dogs excepted, on trains to or from the UK, Ireland, Northern Ireland or Norway.
Dogs at breakfast
Hotel Mondial am Dom is a no for all its dining areas, breakfast included. No other hotel on the list publishes a rule either way, so ask about the breakfast room when you book.
Weight limits
The Wasserturm takes dogs up to 35 kg and the NH Collection Mediapark up to 25 kg. The 25hours, both CityClass hotels, the Mondial, the Novotel and the Leonardo Royal publish no limit, which means ask, not assume.
Fees
EUR 15 a night at the Leonardo Royal and EUR 15 a day at the Novotel. EUR 19 a night at CityClass Alter Markt and CityClass am Dom. EUR 20 a night at the Mondial and the 25hours. EUR 35 per pet per night at the NH Collection. EUR 25 non-refundable at the Wasserturm, basis to confirm.
Two dogs
The NH Collection Mediapark takes two. The 25hours The Circle takes one. The rest don't publish a number.
The cathedral
Sightseeing inside the cathedral is paid and booked online since 1 July 2026, and large bags, trolleys and day rucksacks aren't allowed in. Services still run. No dog rule is published on the opening page, so check with the cathedral before you go.
Best walks
The Rheingarten and the promenade on the old-town bank, right below the CityClass hotels and the Mondial. The Hohenzollern Bridge footpath over to the Rheinpark on the Deutz bank, with the Rheinboulevard steps beside it. The Rheinauhafen riverside promenade from the Novotel, with the Rhine path running south about 4 km to the Rodenkirchen meadows. The Mediapark lake and the Stadtgarten for the NH Collection and the 25hours. The Inner Green Belt with the Aachener Weiher, the Volksgarten south of the Wasserturm, and the Stadtwald in Lindenthal for a longer outing. Near the airport, the Wahner Heide has marked paths. The city's off-lead areas and park lead rules aren't covered here, so keep the dog on a lead until you've checked.
When to go
The Rhine promenades work in any month. From mid-November to Christmas the old town fills with markets, which is the reason many people come and the reason to plan your dog's day carefully: the Stadtgarten market has been described as hardly walkable by 7pm, so go early and on weekdays. The Altstadt market runs to 10 January and the harbour market to 3 January, so there's a window after Christmas too. Market dog rules aren't published, so treat every market as a crowd you might need to step out of.

Dog-friendly hotels in Cologne

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Cologne

Is Cologne dog friendly?+

For getting around and walking, yes. Trams and buses carry dogs free on a short lead, and both Rhine banks have long promenades close to the centre. Hotel restaurants are another matter: the only published rules are restrictive, and the Mondial and the Excelsior Hotel Ernst both keep dogs out of breakfast.

How much do Cologne hotels charge for dogs?+

EUR 15 a night at the Leonardo Royal Airport, EUR 15 a day at the Novotel, EUR 19 a night at both CityClass hotels, EUR 20 a night at the Mondial and the 25hours, and EUR 35 per pet per night at the NH Collection Mediapark. The Wasserturm charges EUR 25 non-refundable, so ask whether that's per night or per stay.

Where should I stay in Cologne with a big dog?+

The Wasserturm Hotel Cologne, which takes dogs up to 35 kg. The NH Collection Mediapark stops at 25 kg. The other hotels publish no limit, so ring before booking a large dog.

Can I take my dog to the Cologne Christmas markets?+

No dog rule is published for any Cologne market, so there's nothing saying yes or no. The cathedral and Stadtgarten markets get very crowded in the evenings. The harbour market at the Rheinauhafen, Chlodwigplatz and the short Eigelstein Winterzauber are smaller, and weekday daytime is easiest with a dog.

Which Cologne hotel is closest to the Christmas markets with a dog?+

CityClass Hotel Alter Markt sits on the Altstadt market square. CityClass am Dom and the Mondial are a few minutes from the cathedral and Alter Markt markets, and the Novotel is beside the harbour market at the Rheinauhafen.

Can dogs go on trams in Cologne?+

Yes, free, on a short lead and under supervision. Dogs that could endanger other passengers must also wear a muzzle, and dogs can't sit on seats. There's no legal right to carriage, so staff can refuse.

Can I take my dog on the train from London to Cologne?+

No. Deutsche Bahn states that pets, apart from assistance dogs, aren't carried on trains to or from the UK or Ireland. The practical route is driving via the car ferry or Eurotunnel.

Can my dog go into Cologne Cathedral?+

No dog rule is published on the cathedral's opening page. Sightseeing is now paid and booked through koelner-dom.de, so ask the cathedral before you plan a visit.

Which Cologne hotel is best near the airport with a dog?+

The Leonardo Royal Hotel Cologne Bonn Airport, at EUR 15 per pet per night. The Wahner Heide heath with marked walking paths is about 2 km away. Size and number limits aren't stated, so confirm them when you book.

Research updated 2026-10-18. Policies change, always confirm with the hotel.
