Where can my dog actually go?

The Alentejo is easy country for a dog. It's flat or gently rolling, the roads are quiet, and most of the good hotels sit on farm estates with room to walk from the door. Eight hotels on our list take dogs, three of them five-star, and every one publishes its own terms. The inland Alentejo carries the list: two around Évora, three below Monsaraz, one at Arraiolos and one at Montemor-o-Novo. On the coast there's only Sublime Comporta.

What separates them is where the dog can go. Convento do Espinheiro outside Évora has the best access story here: a fenced dog park in the gardens, dogs on the Olive restaurant terrace and the Cloister bar terrace, a marked pet zone at the outdoor pool, and up to an hour alone in the room. Dogs aren't in the breakfast room or the spa. Montimerso near Monsaraz has dogs on the terraces and allows two hours alone in the room, but not after 9pm. São Lourenço do Barrocal is a working farm that takes two pets per room or cottage, with a basket and bowls waiting. Pousada Convento de Arraiolos and Gandum Village are the stricter end, with dogs kept out of the restaurants and the pool, and Arraiolos won't let a dog be left alone.

Fees run from EUR 25 a night at Montimerso, Gandum Village and Horta da Moura, through EUR 30 a night at Espinheiro, to EUR 75 for every three nights at Barrocal and a one-off EUR 50 cleaning fee at Sublime Comporta. Several add a deposit: EUR 100 at Horta da Moura, EUR 150 at Montimerso and Sublime. Weight caps run from 15 kg at Arraiolos, 20 kg at Montimerso and 25 kg at Gandum and Octant Évora, up to 40 kg at Espinheiro. For a big dog, Sublime Comporta has no weight limit at all in its Cabana rooms and villas, and Espinheiro takes dogs up to 40 kg.

Comporta's reputation is bigger than its dog list. Quinta da Comporta, Spatia and Almalusa don't take pets, Vermelho in Melides and L'And Vineyards at Montemor-o-Novo say no on their own sites, and so does Herdade do Touril at Zambujeira. In Évora, the Pousada Convento, both M'AR De AR hotels and Vila Galé are a no. If you want the Comporta beaches with a dog, Sublime is the one.

What happens when you get there

Beaches
Portugal keeps dogs off the supervised, concessioned bathing areas during the bathing season, which each council sets and which usually runs roughly June to September. On this coast that's a small stretch near the car parks and beach restaurants, and the long wild beaches either side are a different matter. Check the season dates with Grândola or Alcácer do Sal council before a summer beach day.
Terraces and restaurants
Terraces are the safe bet. Espinheiro has dogs on its restaurant and bar terraces and Montimerso on its terraces. Arraiolos, Gandum Village and Montimerso keep dogs out of the restaurant, and Horta da Moura's rule for its Sítio da Moura restaurant isn't settled, so ask. In town it's each restaurant's call.
Weight limits
15 kg at Pousada Convento de Arraiolos, 20 kg at Montimerso, 25 kg at Gandum Village and Octant Évora, and 40 kg at Convento do Espinheiro. Sublime Comporta has no limit. Barrocal and Horta da Moura don't publish one.
Two dogs
São Lourenço do Barrocal takes up to two pets per room or cottage. Espinheiro, Montimerso, Gandum Village and Arraiolos take one.
Fees
EUR 25 a night or day at Montimerso, Gandum Village and Horta da Moura, EUR 30 a night at Espinheiro, EUR 75 per three nights at Barrocal, and EUR 50 per pet once at Sublime Comporta. Octant Évora and Pousada Convento de Arraiolos don't publish their fee, so ask when you book.
Getting there
Lisbon airport is the gateway, about an hour to Comporta and an hour and a half to Évora. Faro is closer for Zambujeira and the southern coast. A car is close to essential, since most of these hotels are on country estates.
Trains
On CP's Intercidades, InterRegional and Regional trains, Lisbon to Évora included, a dog in a carrier travels free as hand luggage, one per passenger. A dog outside a carrier must be muzzled, on a short lead, off the seats and carrying a vaccination record with the microchip or an EU pet passport. It pays a full fare in your class on Intercidades and half fare on Regional trains, with tickets sold at the ticket office only.
Vets
Hospital Veterinário Muralha de Évora, Rua Marechal Costa Gomes 9, Évora, main line +351 266 771 232, with a 24-hour pet emergency line on +351 937 712 320. There's no confirmed 24-hour vet on the coast, so note the Évora numbers before you go.
Best walks
Inside Évora's walls, from Praça do Giraldo to the Roman Temple and along the aqueduct into the old town, with Évora's municipal dog park, the Parque Canino, for off-lead time. Espinheiro's own fenced dog park. The ramparts of Monsaraz at sunset, small, cobbled and car-free inside the walls, and the Alqueva reservoir shore below it. The farm tracks at Barrocal, Montimerso and Gandum Village, where the Ribeira do Gandum stream runs through the estate. The road up to Arraiolos castle for views over the plain. On the coast, the long beaches at Comporta and Carvalhal outside the bathing season.
When to go
Spring and autumn. Inland Alentejo around Évora, Monsaraz and Montemor-o-Novo is very hot in July and August, often above 35°C, so walks belong to early morning and evening. Spring and autumn also fall outside the bathing season on the coast, and Sublime Comporta's Sublime Paws package, with a welcome gift for the dog, runs in the quieter months.

Is the Alentejo dog friendly?+

Yes, inland especially. Eight hotels on our list take dogs, all with their own written terms, and the country is flat, quiet and full of farm estates you can walk from the door. The coast is thinner, with Sublime Comporta the only hotel on our list there.

Which hotels in Comporta allow dogs?+

Sublime Comporta, in its Cabana rooms, Cabana Suite and whole villas, with no weight limit. Quinta da Comporta, Spatia and Almalusa don't take pets, and Vermelho in Melides says no too.

Can dogs go on the beach in Comporta?+

At Convento do Espinheiro for up to an hour, with the do-not-disturb sign up, and at Montimerso for up to two hours but not after 9pm. Pousada Convento de Arraiolos doesn't allow it, so arrange housekeeping with reception.
