Where can my dog actually go?

For a dog, this corner of the Alps splits in two. The top of Courchevel 1850 is the hard part: Le K2 Palace and L'Apogée say no in writing, and most of the other palace-tier hotels don't publish any dog terms at all. Below that tier it's much easier than people expect. Twenty-eight four and five-star hotels on our list take dogs, spread across Courchevel, Méribel, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Val Thorens, plus Val d'Isère, Tignes and Les Arcs just over the ridge.

What separates them isn't the fee, it's where the dog is allowed to be. The house rule almost everywhere is room and lobby yes, restaurant and spa no. Two hotels break it. La Bouitte in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville welcomes dogs in the Meilleur family's restaurant at no charge, and Les Suites - Maison Bouvier in Tignes Val Claret does the same in its restaurants. In Courchevel 1850, Sivolière is the answer to the question every skier with a dog asks: it has its own dog-sitters who walk dogs in the forest and the village while you're on the slopes. Le Blizzard and La Mourra in Val d'Isère put a bed and bowls in the room and have a resident mascot dog, Mattila, to say hello.

Most hotels charge EUR 15 to EUR 35 a night. L'Ours Blanc in Les Menuires takes small dogs free, Le Strato in 1850 charges EUR 50 a night and Le Grand Coeur in Méribel EUR 70, fed or not. Watch the small-dog ceilings: Saint Roch and Le Coucou cap at 8 kg, Écrin Blanc at 9 kg, and Le Savoy and L'Ours Blanc at 10 kg. For a big dog, Hôtel Higalik in Les Menuires takes dogs up to 35 kg and heavier by arrangement, and the two Beaumier hotels in Val Thorens take one dog up to 25 kg for EUR 25.

The one rule that matters outdoors is the Vanoise National Park core, where dogs aren't allowed even on a lead. It covers the high protected country between the Tarentaise and the Maurienne, not the resort villages, the pistes or most resort walks. It bites on summer high-mountain hikes, many of them from Val d'Isère and Tignes, and there are more than 130 routes in the park where dogs are allowed.

What happens when you get there

Dogs in restaurants
Almost every hotel here keeps dogs out of the restaurant and the spa. La Bouitte and Maison Bouvier are the exceptions. Val d'Isère's tourist office keeps a list of dog-friendly restaurants and bars in the village.
Weight limits
Saint Roch and Le Coucou take dogs under 8 kg only, Écrin Blanc under 9 kg, Le Savoy and L'Ours Blanc 10 kg and under. Les Suites de la Potinière takes two dogs under 10 kg or one over. The Beaumier hotels take one dog up to 25 kg, and Higalik goes to 35 kg and beyond by arrangement.
Fees
Free for small dogs at L'Ours Blanc. EUR 15 a night at Le Tremplin, Altezza and La Cachette, EUR 20 at Maison Bouvier and Ormelune, EUR 25 at the Beaumier hotels, VoulezVous, Taj-I Mah and Le Diamond Rock. EUR 30 at Saint Roch and La Mourra, EUR 35 at Le Coucou, Altapura and Higalik, EUR 50 at Le Strato and EUR 60 at La Bouitte. Le Blizzard charges EUR 15 or EUR 30 depending on the season.
Skiing with a dog
Dogs aren't allowed on the ski runs. Sivolière has its own dog-sitters at EUR 35 an hour, and Ako Dog runs a dog-sitting service in Courchevel from November to the end of April.
Lifts
Méribel publishes its rules. In winter dogs ride the Chalets, Pas du Lac I and II, Plattières, Saulire Express, Olympe, Rhodos and Tougnète gondolas in a carrier, in your arms, or on a lead with a pedestrian pass, at the lift staff's discretion. In summer it's the Tougnète and Pas du Lac. In Val d'Isère dogs can use the Solaise, La Daille and Vallon gondolas and the Olympique and Fornet cable cars in winter, and the summer lifts are free for pedestrians. Tignes' Perce-Neige funicular no longer takes dogs.
Vanoise National Park
Dogs are banned in the park core, even on a lead. Assistance dogs are the only exception. The boundary is marked with blue, white and red paint on rocks and trees, and it's the wide green band on IGN maps. Outside the core, commune rules apply, and you can walk a dog on a lead along a path that follows the boundary.
Nature reserves
Three reserves have their own rules. At the Grande Sassière in Tignes dogs must be on a lead. At the Plan de Tuéda in Méribel-Mottaret they're allowed on a lead only on the plateau from the Mottaret car park to the Refuge du Plan. The Tignes-Champagny and Bailletaz reserve doesn't allow dogs at all.
Patou and herds
In summer you'll meet Patou guard dogs with the flocks in Val d'Isère and Méribel. Keep your dog on a lead, move away calmly and avoid sudden movements.
Getting there
Most UK travellers with dogs drive, via Eurotunnel or the ferries. Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry are the gateway airports, Moûtiers is the train station for the Three Valleys, and Bourg-Saint-Maurice serves Les Arcs, Tignes and Val d'Isère. Check your airline's and the train operator's dog rules before you book.
Best walks
In Courchevel, the Montcharvet loop and the Crêtes du Mont Charvet above Le Praz. In Méribel, the Sentier de la Poésie from Les Allues, La Traie from Les Ravines, the Lac de Tuéda on a lead, and in summer the Grand Lac via Chandon, where dogs can swim, and the Rocher de la Loze from the Pas du Lac. In Val d'Isère, the 3 km Chemin des Sources loop from La Daille, the Lac de l'Ouillette via the Solaise gondola, the Vallée du Manchet, the Sentier du Balcon, the Bois de la Laye, and in summer the Lac de la Sassière from the Saut car park, on a lead. In Tignes, the Tour du Lac on a lead, the balcony path from Les Brévières to La Savinaz and La Gurraz, the Lacs du Chardonnet from Tignes 2100 and the Nazonde chalets through the Bois de la Balme. Dogs can swim in Tignes' lakes outside the protected areas.
When to go
July and August are the best dog season, with the lifts, lakes and hiking open, though it's short and Courchevel's summer season ends on 30 August. Winter runs from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 in Courchevel and from 28 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 in Val d'Isère, and Méribel opens in early December. Many hotels close between seasons, so check each one's dates before you plan. In winter your dog is on the village paths and forest walks, not the slopes.

Is Courchevel dog friendly?+

Below the palace tier, yes. Twenty-eight hotels across Courchevel and the neighbouring resorts on our list take dogs, most for EUR 15 to EUR 35 a night. Le K2 Palace and L'Apogée refuse dogs, and dogs aren't allowed on the ski runs, so plan for walks and a dog-sitter while you ski.

Which Courchevel palace hotels allow dogs?+

Le K2 Palace, including K2 Altitude and K2 Djola, and L'Apogée are a clear no. Most other palace-tier hotels in 1850 don't publish dog terms. The five-stars in 1850 that do take dogs are Le Strato at EUR 50 a night, Saint Roch for dogs under 8 kg, Sivolière, Les Suites de la Potinière and the Hôtel Saint Joseph.

Which ski hotels in the French Alps let dogs in the restaurant?+
