Where can my dog actually go?

The Côte Fleurie is easy dog country. Most of the four and five-star hotels here say yes to dogs, the tourist offices in Trouville and Deauville put out water bowls for visiting dogs, and many brasseries, crêperies, cafés and beach clubs along the coast take dogs inside, not only on the terrace. No beach between Honfleur and Cabourg is closed to dogs all year. The limits bite from mid-June to the end of August between 10am and 7pm, and outside those hours and months there's a lot of sand to run on. Twelve hotels on our list take dogs, from Trouville's boardwalk to the foot of Mont-Saint-Michel.

What separates them is how much they tell you. Le Flaubert on the Trouville boardwalk puts out bowls, a dog cushion and a quilt, and serves breakfast in the room. Townhouse Trouville is run by owners with their own dog, Brodie, and hands out local dog tips. Hôtel La Chaumière near Honfleur lets its own dogs and cats roam the garden and has laid out bowls, treats and a bed for guests' dogs. The no is just as clear at the Grand Hôtel de Cabourg, where dogs aren't allowed in the restaurant dining room, Le Balbec or Le Balbec Côté Bistrot. Les Manoirs des Portes de Deauville keeps dogs out of the breakfast space, the pool and the spa. No hotel on this coast publishes dogs in its own restaurant, so for dinner with the dog the town brasseries are the better bet.

Fees run from EUR 12 per dog a night at Townhouse Trouville and EUR 15 at Le Flaubert, through EUR 30 a night at Les Manoirs des Portes de Deauville, to EUR 35 a night at Le Rituel in Honfleur and the Grand Hôtel de Cabourg. The Barrière Le Royal and Cures Marines list EUR 35 a stay and YOU Hôtels EUR 15 a stay. No hotel here publishes a clear weight limit, and at the Royal, Cures Marines, Cabourg and Les Manoirs a small-dog limit may apply, so get the size rule in writing before you book a big dog. Townhouse Trouville, where the owners run the place around their own dog, is the pick for a bigger dog, but ring first.

Two things to know before you book. La Maison du Peintre in Honfleur and the Hôtel du Polo in Deauville don't take dogs. And L'Ermitage sits at Beauvoir on the road to Mont-Saint-Michel, a separate trip from the Côte Fleurie rather than a base for it.

    A thatched house on the estuary shore west of Honfleur where the hotel's own dogs and cats roam the garden, and guests' dogs have found bowls, treats and a bed laid out on arrival. What happens when you get there

Deauville beach
Dogs are on the sand at any hour from 1 January to 30 April and 16 September to 31 December. From 16 June to 31 August it's before 10am and after 7pm only, and in May, early June and early September weekends and holidays follow the same hours. Les Planches takes dogs on a lead all year.
Trouville beach
Dogs are allowed all year but only before 10am and after 7pm, and off lead in those hours if they stay under control. The Promenade Savignac takes dogs on a lead all year. Dogs aren't allowed in the children's play areas or sandpits.
Beaches open all year
Cricqueboeuf and Pennedepie take dogs on a lead at any hour all year. So do the east end of Cabourg beach facing the dunes of the Pointe de Cabourg, both ends of the beach at Villers-sur-Mer and the two ends of Houlgate beach. In central Cabourg dogs are banned between avenue des Devises and avenue Durand-Morimbau.
Honfleur
Plage du Butin takes dogs on a lead before 10am and after 7pm, and in July and August plan on those hours only. Keep dogs on a lead in spring and summer for the nesting season. Rules change season to season, so check the current notice at the beach.
Dogs at breakfast
Hardly anyone publishes a yes. Les Manoirs des Portes de Deauville keeps dogs out of the breakfast space during breakfast. Le Flaubert serves breakfast in the room and L'Ermitage in your suite or on your terrace, which solves it.
Getting there
Brittany Ferries sails Portsmouth to Caen (Ouistreham), close to Cabourg, and Portsmouth to Le Havre, across the Pont de Normandie from Honfleur. Dogs travel in the car, a kennel or a pet cabin depending on the ship, so check the journey planner before counting on a cabin, and they must be muzzled outside those spaces. LeShuttle keeps the dog in the car with you for the 35-minute crossing, and Calais to Deauville is a long half-day drive.
Trains
Paris Saint-Lazare to Deauville-Trouville is about two hours. On TGV and Intercités small dogs travel in a closed bag up to 45 x 30 x 25 cm, and larger dogs go on a lead and muzzled for the whole trip from EUR 10 a journey, maximum two animals per passenger.
Vets
There's no 24-hour vet hospital on the coast. Out of hours the Calvados on-call rota applies and any clinic can give you the number. CALM Clinique Vétérinaire on avenue Hocquart de Turtot in Deauville is the one to ring first, but check its out-of-hours cover before you need it.

Les Planches in Deauville and the Promenade Savignac in Trouville on a lead all year, the Parc des Lais de Mer on the Deauville seafront, the Marais de Blonville-Villers at any hour on a lead, the fenced caniparc in the Parc naturel du Marais at Villers-sur-Mer, Mont-Canisy, the Parc Calouste Gulbenkian in Bénerville (free for dogs), the Falaises des Vaches Noires from the sand at low tide, the Forêt de Saint-Gatien-des-Bois on a lead outside hunting season, and the all-year sand at Cricqueboeuf, Pennedepie and the east end of Cabourg.
When to go
Autumn and winter give the most freedom on the sand, with Deauville beach open to dogs at any hour from mid-September to the end of April. May, June and September are lovely too, but Deauville restricts weekends and most beaches limit hours from mid-June to the end of August. Heat is rarely a problem on this coast. Hunting season closes the forest walks, and Mont-Saint-Michel is very crowded in summer, so go early in the day.

Where should I stay in Deauville with a big dog?+

No hotel here publishes a clear weight limit, and a small-dog limit may apply at the Royal, Cures Marines, Cabourg and Les Manoirs. Townhouse Trouville, run by owners with their own dog, is the best bet, and Le Flaubert and La Chaumière are worth a call. Get the size rule in writing before you book.

Can I take my dog to Mont-Saint-Michel?+

Yes, on a lead in the village lanes and on the ramparts, but not into the abbey or the parish church. The free shuttles only take small dogs carried in a bag, so bigger dogs walk the footbridge from the car park, about 40 minutes, or stay in the kennel at the tourist information centre. Go early, it's very crowded in summer.

Can I take my dog on the ferry to Normandy?+

Yes. Brittany Ferries sails Portsmouth to Caen and Le Havre, and dogs travel in the car, a kennel or a pet cabin depending on the ship. Dogs left in the car can be visited by one person for up to 15 minutes at set times. Coming back to the UK, dogs need tapeworm treatment 1 to 5 days before travel.
