The Douro Valley is the hardest place on our list to take a dog, and it isn't close. Almost every quinta hotel in the wine country refuses dogs outright. Only two hotels in the whole region are on our list, and neither is a wine estate.
The no list is the useful part. Quinta Nova, The Vintage House in Pinhão, Quinta da Pacheca's Wine House Hotel, Casa das Pipas at Quinta do Portal, Quinta do Vallado, Ventozelo, Barrilário, Quinta de la Rosa, Vila Galé Douro and Douro Royal Valley all say pets aren't allowed. So do Casa da Calçada and Monverde in Amarante. Six Senses Douro Valley doesn't publish a dog policy, so ask before you plan around it.
Octant Douro is the one five-star that takes dogs, with a proper pet programme: a bed, blanket, towel, poo bags, a toy, bowls and biscuits in the room, plus a list of local vets and walks. Be clear about where it is, though. It's on the river at Castelo de Paiva, in the lower Douro, well west of the port-wine country around Régua and Pinhão, so the quintas are a drive rather than a view. Dogs up to 25 kg, which makes it the pick for a bigger dog, and pet rooms are limited, so book early. Its nightly pet supplement isn't published.
Douro Castelo Signature in Lamego is the other, and it's closer to the wine country. It admits pets under a policy it doesn't publish, so the fee, the weight limit and where your dog can go are all questions to put to the hotel when you book.
The big river cruise operators say no as well. DouroAzul, Tomaz do Douro and Barcadouro only allow assistance dogs. The exception is Magnífico Douro in Pinhão, whose rabelo boat tours take dogs, and that's the best dog day out in the valley.

What happens when you get there
- The quintas
- Nearly every wine hotel in the valley refuses dogs, from Quinta Nova and The Vintage House to Quinta do Vallado and Ventozelo. If you've seen a quinta you love, assume no until the hotel tells you otherwise in writing.
- River cruises
- DouroAzul, on its ships and its rabelos, Tomaz do Douro and Barcadouro only take assistance dogs. Magnífico Douro in Pinhão takes dogs on its rabelo tours, as long as they stay under your supervision. The tours last 50 minutes and leave about every half hour from 10:00 to 17:30, April to October.
- Wine tastings
- No quinta visit page publishes a dog rule either way, Vallado, Croft's Quinta da Roêda and Sandeman included. Given how many quinta hotels say no, don't assume a tasting will allow your dog. Ask when you book the visit.
- Restaurants
- Portuguese restaurants choose whether to admit dogs, and the ones that do usually show it at the door. Expect to ask each time. Outdoor terraces are the practical answer.
- Getting there
- Porto is the gateway airport. Dogs can't fly into the UK in the cabin on commercial flights, so travellers from the UK usually drive, often via the Portsmouth or Plymouth ferries to Santander or Bilbao. The CP train runs up the Douro line from Porto to Régua, Pinhão and Pocinho, so check CP's current pet rule before you travel.
- Heat
- The Douro is one of the hottest parts of Portugal in July and August. Walk early in the morning and in the evening, and keep the middle of the day for shade.
- Vets
- The UTAD veterinary hospital at the university in Vila Real runs a 24-hour emergency service with a companion-animal clinic. There's no confirmed 24-hour vet on the river itself, so note Vila Real before you go.
- Best walks
- At Castelo de Paiva, the Choupal das Concas riverside park, about 25 minutes on foot from Octant Douro. In Lamego, the wooded park around the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios at the top of the baroque staircase. In Peso da Régua, the Douro riverside avenue, and in Pinhão, the riverfront by the station. In Amarante, the Tâmega riverside by the São Gonçalo bridge and the Parque Florestal.
- When to go
- Avoid July and August if you can, because the valley is one of the hottest places in Portugal and walks shrink to early morning and evening. September is the harvest and peak season at the quintas. Magnífico Douro's rabelo tours, the one boat trip your dog can join, run from April to October.

Is the Douro Valley dog friendly?+
Not very. Almost every quinta hotel refuses dogs, and the big river cruise operators only take assistance dogs. Two hotels on our list take dogs, Octant Douro on the lower Douro and Douro Castelo Signature in Lamego, and one rabelo boat operator in Pinhão takes dogs aboard.
