Where can my dog actually go?

Dresden is easy on a dog because of the Elbe. The meadows run along both banks right through the city, so almost every central hotel is within 1 km of a long green walk, and that matters in December when the Altstadt is packed with Christmas markets. Thirteen hotels made the list, most of them in the Altstadt around the Neumarkt and the Altmarkt, with the rest west towards the Zwinger, on the riverfront and across the river in the Innere Neustadt.

Most of Dresden's luxury tier takes dogs, but almost none says where the dog can go once it's out of the room. The Taschenbergpalais Kempinski is the exception by a distance: dogs come into the lobby, onto the restaurant terraces, into Amalie Pâtisserie & Lounge and into Kastenmeiers, with a dog bed, treats and an à la carte dog menu. They aren't in Das Palais, the breakfast restaurant, the Almhütte or Bar 1705. Hotel Indigo Wettiner Platz is the only one with dogs at breakfast, in the buffet area, plus its own dog walking area. The Holiday Inn Am Zwinger is a no for the restaurant, bar and breakfast room but lets dogs onto the terrace. Both Bülow hotels ask you to leave the dog in the room during breakfast, and INNSiDE by Meliá lets dogs move round its public spaces with you.

Fees run from EUR 15 a night at the Elbflorenz, through EUR 20 at the Holiday Inn Am Zwinger, the Steigenberger de Saxe and The Cloud One, EUR 25 at the Gewandhaus and the Maritim, and EUR 26.50 at the Indigo, to EUR 35 at the NH Collection and both Bülow hotels and EUR 42.40 a night at the Kempinski. Barceló Dresden Newa and INNSiDE don't publish a figure. For a big dog, the Holiday Inn Am Zwinger takes one dog of any size and the Bülow Palais and Bülow Residenz charge EUR 35 a night whatever the size. The NH Collection stops at 25 kg and the Indigo at knee height.

Three things to know. Dresden's 6% accommodation tax applies to the dog fee as well as the room, so expect a small extra line on the bill. The ten city-run museums, the Stadtmuseum among them, don't allow dogs. And the grand names outside the centre say no: Schloss Eckberg in Loschwitz, the Schloss Hotel Dresden-Pillnitz and the Elbresidenz in Bad Schandau don't take pets, so there's nothing on this list in Blasewitz, Loschwitz or Saxon Switzerland.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Striezelmarkt
Wednesday 25 November to Thursday 24 December 2026 on the Altmarkt, daily 10:00 to 21:00, with opening day 16:30 to 21:00 and Christmas Eve 10:00 to 14:00. No dog rule is published for the Striezelmarkt or the other Dresden markets. The NH Collection is on the square and the Gewandhaus about 100 m away. With a dog, go at opening time on a weekday, as the evening crowds on the Altmarkt are heavy.
Paddle steamers
Dogs are allowed on the Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt steamers, on a lead and supervised at all times. Dogs classed as dangerous under Saxon law must be muzzled. No dog fare is listed. There's a winter programme with Pillnitz and Christmas Garden trips and Advent cruises, but check the 2026 sailing dates.
Deutsche Bahn
Dogs up to house-cat size travel free in a carrier. Larger dogs need their own half-fare ticket, can't have a seat reservation, and must be on a lead and muzzled if not in a box. Berlin and Prague have direct trains to the Hauptbahnhof, and Barceló Dresden Newa is the closest hotel. Check the Prague EuroCity rule before you travel.
Trams
The general DVB and VVO dog fare for an ordinary ticket isn't covered here, so check with DVB before you rely on a price.
Dogs at breakfast
Hotel Indigo Wettiner Platz is a yes, in the buffet area. The Kempinski and the Holiday Inn Am Zwinger are a no for the breakfast room. The Bülow Palais and Bülow Residenz ask you to leave your dog in the room during breakfast. Everyone else is unknown, so ask.
Weight limits
The NH Collection Altmarkt caps at 25 kg and the Indigo takes dogs up to knee height. The Holiday Inn Am Zwinger, the Bülow Palais and the Bülow Residenz have no weight limit. The rest publish nothing, which means ask, not assume.
Fees
EUR 15 a night cleaning fee at the Elbflorenz. EUR 20 a night at the Holiday Inn Am Zwinger and the Steigenberger de Saxe, and EUR 20 a day at The Cloud One. EUR 25 a night at the Gewandhaus and EUR 25 a day at the Maritim. EUR 26.50 a night at the Indigo. EUR 35 per pet per night at the NH Collection and both Bülow hotels. EUR 42.40 a night at the Kempinski. The 6% city accommodation tax is added on top, which the Maritim shows as EUR 1.50 per dog per day.
Museums
The ten city-run museums, including the Stadtmuseum, the Städtische Galerie and the Technische Sammlungen, don't allow dogs, assistance dogs excepted. Rules for the Zwinger collections, the Grünes Gewölbe, the Residenzschloss, the Albertinum and the Frauenkirche aren't published here, so ask. Take turns or plan for a sitter.
Best walks
The Elbe meadows on both banks, the default walk from almost every hotel: directly outside the Maritim, about 700 m from the Indigo by the Marienbrücke, and across the Augustusbrücke from the Neumarkt hotels. Brühl's Terrace above the river, with steps down to the Elbe path, a few minutes from INNSiDE, The Cloud One and the de Saxe. The Japanisches Palais gardens on the Neustadt bank near the two Bülow hotels. The Grosser Garten, Dresden's big city park, where dogs must be on a short lead and you stay on the paths. The Dresdner Heide forest north-east of the city for longer outings, but it's a landscape protection area and dogs can't run off-lead except in areas marked for it.
When to go
The Elbe meadows work in every season. December brings the Striezelmarkt and the old town at its fullest, which is the reason to come and the reason to keep your dog's walks on the river rather than the squares. Go to the Altmarkt at opening time on weekdays. The paddle steamers run a winter programme, so a river trip is possible in the colder months, but check 2026 dates before you plan around one.
