Where can my dog actually go?

Graubünden is easy country for a dog. Almost every four and five-star hotel in the mountain resorts takes dogs, the Rhaetian Railway, post buses and most lifts carry them, and the walking starts at the door: lake loops at Davos, Arosa and Lenzerheide, forest straight out of the garden in Flims and Davos, and swimming at the Caumasee and the Crestasee. Thirty hotels on our list take dogs, across Graubünden and two neighbours on the edge of it, Bad Ragaz in canton St. Gallen and Andermatt in canton Uri.

What separates them is where the dog can go once you're inside. The pattern here is consistent: dogs in the room, the lobby and often the bar, frequently at dinner, and almost never at the breakfast buffet or in the spa. Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa publishes the most specific list in the region, with dogs in the lobby, the Grand Salon, the bar, La Collina at lunch and The Basement on winter evenings. The Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof in Flims keeps dogs out of the restaurant but will set you a table in the bar for breakfast or dinner, which makes it the only hotel on our list that publishes a way to have breakfast with your dog. Waldhotel Davos lets calm dogs join you at dinner and is one of the few that says plainly a dog can wait alone in the room. Over the canton line, Grand Resort Bad Ragaz welcomes dogs at selected tables in verve by sven and the Zollstube, in the lobbies and bars and on two terraces.

Fees run from CHF 10 a day at the ABC in Chur and CHF 15 at Hof Maran and Me and All in Flims, through CHF 20 to CHF 25 at most four-stars, to CHF 40 at Valsana and AlpenGold, CHF 45 at Tschuggen, CHF 50 at The Chedi and CHF 59 a night at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. Food is rarely included. Very few hotels publish a weight limit. Tschuggen and Valsana both state no limit and take up to two dogs, which makes Tschuggen the pick for a big dog. Hotel Rovanada in Vals caps at 50 cm at the shoulder.

The one transport trap is the Glacier Express. Dogs aren't allowed on board at all, assistance dogs excepted, so if the famous train is part of your plan, it won't be with your dog. The rest of the Rhaetian Railway takes dogs, including the Bernina Express, and dogs just need a half-price ticket or a CHF 25 day pass.

Check your dates before you book. Most mountain hotels close between seasons, roughly mid-April to early June and mid-October to early December, and hunting season runs from about September to December, so keep the lead on in the forest.

What happens when you get there

The Glacier Express
No dogs on board, assistance dogs excepted with Swiss documentation. It's a catering hygiene rule and it applies to every dog, carried or not. The Bernina Express does take dogs, small ones free in a carrier and larger ones with a dog ticket, and it crosses into Italy at Tirano, so bring the pet passport.
Trains and buses
On the Rhaetian Railway dogs need a 2nd-class half-price ticket, even if you're in 1st. Dogs under 30 cm at the shoulder go free in a box or basket. A dog day pass is CHF 25. No dogs in the Gourmino dining car or on RhB gourmet trips. In Davos the guest card covers post buses and the mountain railways in zones 400, 410 and 420.
Lifts
The Schatzalp funicular in Davos carries dogs free, and dogs are welcome on the Flims Laax mountain railways and chairlifts. Lift rules in Arosa, Lenzerheide, Klosters and Andermatt aren't published in one place, so ask at the ticket desk.
Dogs at breakfast and dinner
Dinner is the easy one. Dogs are welcome in the evening at Piz Buin in Klosters, in Rovanada's restaurants except the Bündner Stube, and at dinner at Waldhotel Davos. Breakfast is almost always a no, at Adula, Piz Buin, Rovanada, Schweizerhof Lenzerheide and Waldhotel. The exception is the Schweizerhof in Flims, where you eat in the bar with your dog.

Two dogs
Tschuggen, Valsana and Hotel Lenzerhorn all take up to two dogs a room. Waldhotel Davos allows one dog per adult guest. Most others don't publish a number, so ask.
Seasonal closures
Most mountain hotels shut between seasons, roughly mid-April to early June and mid-October to early December. Check opening dates before planning a spring or late-autumn trip.

Best walks
The flat 5 km loop round the Davosersee and the 3.5 km Hohe Promenade above Davos, both on the lead. The Obersee and Untersee lakeside paths and the Eichhörnliweg forest path in Arosa. The Heidsee loop at Lenzerheide, about 50 minutes. In Flims, the Flimser Grosswald forest trails and the Caumasee, where dogs can swim free at the far side away from the lido, and the Crestasee, where dogs go into the water round the lake on a lead but stay off the jetty and out of the children's pool. The Landquart riverside path in Klosters, the Valser Rhein paths in Vals, the River Inn paths and the Lai da Tarasp below the castle at Scuol, the Tamina gorge path from Bad Ragaz and the Reuss riverside path at Andermatt. Robidog bins are everywhere.
When to go
June to mid-October for the lakes, swimming at the Caumasee and the forest trails, and December to early April for snow, when Davos has dog-friendly cross-country loops at Islen, Frauenkirch and along the Landwasser-Trail. Avoid mid-April to early June and mid-October to early December, when most mountain hotels close. Hunting season runs roughly September to December, so keep dogs on the lead in the woods, and respect the wildlife rest zones in winter. For a dog that hates fireworks, Davos bans them all year and Lenzerheide bans them on 1 August and New Year's Eve.

Is Graubünden dog friendly?+

Very. Almost every four and five-star hotel in the resorts takes dogs, the Rhaetian Railway, post buses and most lifts carry them, and there are lake loops and forest paths from most hotel doors. The two things to know are that breakfast buffets and spas are almost always dog-free, and the Glacier Express doesn't take dogs.

Can dogs go on the Glacier Express?+

Rarely. Adula, Piz Buin, Rovanada, Schweizerhof Lenzerheide and Waldhotel Davos all keep dogs out of the breakfast room. The Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof in Flims is the one to book if you want your dog with you, because it serves breakfast in the bar for guests with dogs.

At Waldhotel Davos, yes. Dogs can wait alone in the room with the door card hung out, and they can spend time on the balcony. Most other hotels don't publish a rule, so ask. Tschuggen and Schweizerhof Flims offer dog sitting if you'd rather not leave them.

Where can my dog swim in Graubünden?+

At the Caumasee near Flims, dogs and people can swim free at the far side, away from the lido, which dogs can't use. At the Crestasee dogs can go into the water round the lake on a lead, but not on the jetty or in the children's pool.

Are Bad Ragaz and Andermatt in Graubünden?+

No. Bad Ragaz is in canton St. Gallen, on the main line from Zurich to Chur, and Andermatt is in canton Uri, reached via Göschenen or the Oberalp line. We include them here because they sit on the edge of Graubünden and both have strong five-star options for dogs.
