Best Dog-Friendly Hotels in Hamburg
Germany
50 dog-friendly luxury hotels.
Where can my dog actually go?
Hamburg is the most dog-friendly big city we've researched in Germany, and it's not close. Fifty hotels on our list take dogs, and the good ones go well past a fee. The east Hotel in St Pauli lets dogs into almost the whole building including the restaurant, with a basket, blanket, toys and treats in the room. Grand Elysée seats dogs in its brasserie, café and bar and puts water bowls around the hotel. Lindner Hagenbeck lets dogs join you at breakfast and dinner. TORTUE folds a bed and two bowls into its EUR 30 fee and offers dog-sitting. The Westin inside the Elbphilharmonie has a Heavenly Dog Bed package. PIERDREI leaves a bed, bowl, bedtime treat and poop bags and refreshes them daily.
The two grand dames split. The Atlantic on the Aussenalster puts a basket, blanket and bowl in the room. The Vier Jahreszeiten is pet-free, though it runs a supervised dog lounge for restaurant guests, which tells you something about the city. Out at Nienstedten, Louis C. Jacob takes dogs into its wine bistro but not the main restaurant, and up the Alster valley Kleinhuis Mellingburger Schleuse serves dinner with the dog at your feet.
The city itself makes it easy. Dogs ride free on every HVV bus, train and harbour ferry on a lead. The Alster lake paths, the HafenCity promenades and the Elbe beach at Övelgönne are all open to leashed dogs, and the Falkensteiner Ufer has an off-lead stretch. Fees run EUR 10 to EUR 35 a night, with almost nothing over EUR 50.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Lead law
- Hamburg has a year-round lead law across the city. The only off-lead spots are designated dog zones, including the Falkensteiner Ufer on the Elbe west of Blankenese.
- Public transport
- Dogs travel free on all HVV services, buses, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and the HADAG harbour ferries, as long as they're on a lead. Dogs that could worry other passengers need a muzzle.
- Alster and Elbe walks
- The Aussenalster loop is about 7 km of flat lakeside path, all open to leashed dogs. The Elbe beach at Övelgönne takes dogs on a lead year-round, and the HafenCity promenades, Lohsepark and Baakenpark are the walks near the Elbphilharmonie.
- Planten un Blomen
- Dogs are allowed on the paths only, on a short lead. Lawns, flower gardens, playgrounds and the greenhouses are off-limits, so treat it as a walk-through rather than a place to play.
- Restaurants
- east Hotel, Grand Elysée (brasserie, café, bar), Lindner Hagenbeck (breakfast and dinner), Kleinhuis Mellingburger Schleuse (dinner), Louis C. Jacob (wine bistro), The George (lounge and bar), PIERDREI (bistro and terrace) and Empire Riverside (ground-floor bar) let dogs into at least one dining or bar area. Le Méridien, Rotary, Crowne Plaza and Fraser Suites keep them out.
- Fees
- EUR 10 at Landhaus Flottbek and Mercure Volkspark, EUR 15 to EUR 25 at most, EUR 30 to EUR 35 at TORTUE, Grand Elysée, Fraser Suites, The George and INNSiDE, EUR 40 at the Westin, EUR 50 at the Fontenay and Conrad. Louis C. Jacob adds a EUR 50 one-off clean.
- Best walks
- The Aussenalster loop, the Elbe beach from Övelgönne to Teufelsbrück, Jenischpark above the Elbchaussee, the Alstertal nature reserve at Poppenbüttel, and the Altonaer Volkspark.
- When to go
- May to September for the lake and the beach. Hamburg is a walking city in any weather, and the hotels run year-round, so winter works if you pack a coat for both of you.
