Heidelberg is compact enough to walk everywhere with a dog. Cross the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke to the Neckarwiese lawns, or the Old Bridge and the Schlangenweg steps up to the Philosophenweg, and you have the river and the hillside within minutes of every hotel here. Dogs are welcome on a lead in the castle garden, but not inside the castle. Five hotels made the list, all in Heidelberg city, on the Altstadt edge, in Bergheim and in the Bahnstadt.
Der Europäische Hof is the one that stands apart. Dogs are welcome in its public areas, and only the Panorama Spa and the gym are off-limits. Whether public areas includes the restaurants, the bar and the breakfast room isn't spelt out, so ask before dinner. The two Qube hotels, in Bergheim and the Bahnstadt, are the only ones with a full dog package on their own site: a welcome treat, a dog blanket, bowls, 200 g of dry food a day, poo bags and walk tips. The NH Collection and the ATLANTIC take dogs in the room and publish nothing about the rest of the house.
Fees are EUR 20 a day at the ATLANTIC, EUR 25 a day for the Qube dog package at either hotel, and EUR 35 per pet per night at the NH Collection. Der Europäische Hof doesn't publish a fee. The only published weight cap is the NH Collection's 25 kg, with two dogs allowed. Nobody else sets one out, so for a big dog, ask Der Europäische Hof first.
This page covers Heidelberg city only. The Neckar valley towns and the Bergstrasse have very little at four or five stars, and the castle hotels along the valley couldn't be confirmed, so none of them is listed. Book in the city and day-trip by boat or train.

Der Europäische Hof HeidelbergThe best access story in the city: dogs are welcome in the hotel's public areas, with only the Panorama Spa and the fitness area off-limits. The fee, weight limit and number of dogs aren't published, so confirm them and check with the restaurant team before you bring your dog to dinner. Bismarckplatz and the walk to the Neckar are a few minutes away.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- The castle
- Dogs aren't allowed inside Heidelberg Castle, assistance dogs excepted. They're welcome in the castle garden on a lead. The courtyard and the Fasskeller aren't covered by the published rule, so ask at the entrance.
- Bergbahn
- Dogs ride the funicular on a lead, and dogs that could endanger passengers must wear a muzzle. Small animals travel in a suitable container. No dog fare is shown. The adult Schlossticket at EUR 11 covers the lower railway from Kornmarkt via the Schloss to Molkenkur plus the castle courtyard, the Fasskeller and the Apothecary Museum, and prices change on 1 January 2027.
- Christmas market
- Monday 23 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026, 11:00 to 21:00 daily, spread across six Altstadt squares: Marktplatz, Karlsplatz with the ice rink, Bismarckplatz, Universitätsmarkt, Kornmarkt and the Anatomiegarten. No dog rule is published for the market. Weekends and evenings are busiest, and the spread-out layout means you can pick a quieter square on a weekday late morning.
- Neckarwiese
- Dogs must be on a lead on the Neckarwiese except from 06:00 to 09:00, when they can run free under voice control. No dogs on the children's playgrounds. The rule comes from a 2023 council decision, so check it's still current.
- Trams and buses
- On VRN and rnv, a dog needs a child's ticket for the fare zone or a dog monthly pass, and must be on a lead. A muzzle is only needed if the dog could endanger others. A dog in a closed carrier travels free. Some monthly, annual and day tickets let you take a dog in place of a person. Whether the Deutschlandticket covers a dog isn't stated.
- Deutsche Bahn
- Small dogs up to house-cat size travel free in a carrier. Bigger dogs need their own half-fare ticket and must be on a lead and muzzled. Pack a muzzle, it catches a lot of visitors out. The ATLANTIC and Qube Bahnstadt are a few minutes from the Hauptbahnhof.
- Neckar boats
- Weisse Flotte carries dogs on a lead, and they must wear a secure muzzle or travel in a closed container. Staff can refuse any animal, and no dog fare is listed. Winter sailings run, including Glühwein cruises from early November.
- Getting there
- Frankfurt Airport is the main gateway, with long-distance trains from the airport station to Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof. Lufthansa takes cabin pets up to 8 kg including the carrier, in a carrier no bigger than 55 x 40 x 23 cm, booked at least 72 hours ahead. It says it may refuse pet bookings on some routes such as to the UK and Ireland, so flying out can work while flying home is the usual problem.
- Best walks
- The Neckar riverbank path from Bergheim to the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, a few minutes from the NH Collection and Qube Bergheim. Across the bridge, the Neckarwiese lawns on the Neuenheim side, off-lead from 06:00 to 09:00 and on lead the rest of the day. From the Old Bridge, the Schlangenweg steps up to the Philosophenweg along the hillside, with the view back over the Altstadt and the castle. The castle garden on a lead, reached on foot or by Bergbahn. In the Bahnstadt, the car-free promenades and the green strip of the Grüne Meile outside Qube Bahnstadt and behind the ATLANTIC.
- When to go
- Heidelberg works for a dog all year because the river walks and the castle garden don't close. The Christmas market, 23 November to 22 December 2026, brings heavy crowds at weekends and in the evenings, but it's spread across six squares, so a weekday late morning at the smaller ones is easy with a dog. Neckar boats keep sailing in winter, with Glühwein cruises from early November. Bergbahn prices change on 1 January 2027.
