Where can my dog actually go?

Istria is the easiest part of Croatia we've researched for a dog. The towns publish lists of named, official dog beaches, the Golden Cape forest park in Rovinj and the Lungomare in Opatija give you long car-free walks by the water, and the Parenzana trail runs inland through the hill towns. Four hotel groups here run proper dog programmes, which is why thirty hotels made our list across Rovinj, Poreč, Vrsar, Umag, Novigrad, Motovun and the Opatija riviera.

What separates them is where the dog is allowed to be. In Rovinj, Maistra's Grand Park, Monte Mulini and Lone all take dogs and welcome them at designated restaurants and bars, with the Golden Cape quarry dog beach on the doorstep, which makes them the best dining access on the coast. Garden Suites Umag has the clearest resort rules: dogs up to 10 kg eat with you on designated terraces and have their own marked beach zone, but they're not in the restaurants, at reception or at the pools. Villa Valdibora in Rovinj old town keeps dogs out of the restaurant but is the only hotel here that says a well-behaved dog can stay alone in the room if reception knows. Palazzo Rainis in Novigrad is the other end of the scale, dogs up to 8 kg in the room only, with no common areas.

Fees run from nothing at Roxanich in Motovun on its PETSTAY package (up to two small pets) and at Hotel Imperial in Opatija when you book direct, through EUR 20 per pet at Villa Valdibora and EUR 25 at Aminess and Palazzo Rainis, to EUR 25 to 38 per pet per day at the Valamar hotels in Poreč and EUR 70 per pet per day at Hotel Ambasador, Hotel Kvarner and Villa Amalia. Maistra doesn't publish its fee, so ask. For a big dog, look at Opatija. Liburnia's hotels there, Ambasador, Kvarner, Imperial, Palace Bellevue and the rest, take dogs up to 25 kg, the highest published limit on this page, with a bowl and cover as a welcome gift.

Now the no. The headline five-stars split. In Rovinj, Hotel Eden, Hotel Adriatic and Island Hotel Katarina don't take dogs. In Poreč, Valamar's Pical Resort and Marea Suites don't either. In Pula we couldn't confirm a single four or five-star hotel that takes dogs, so base yourself in Rovinj and drive in. One more thing on names: Opatija is technically Kvarner, not Istria, but its Lungomare and two fenced dog beaches make it the easiest dog base in the region.

What happens when you get there

Dog beaches
Rovinj's official list includes Borik beach, the quarry in the Golden Cape Forest Park, Škaraba and Cuvi coves, Kastelan cove and Veštar cove. In Pula there's Valkane, Valovine, Galebove stijene, Štinjanska vala, Hidrobaza and Stoja, and in Medulin Mukalba and Bumbište at Banjole. Opatija has the fenced Slatina Dog Beach in the centre and Mali Raj Dog Beach on the Lungomare. These are designated extras. Most other beaches don't publish a rule either way and resort beaches set their own.
Poreč and Umag
We found no named public dog beach in Poreč, so ask your hotel or the tourist board. Some Valamar properties have fenced off-lead dog parks. Near Umag, Kanegra beach has a dog area and Plava Laguna has marked pet zones on its Umag beaches.
Group rules
Valamar wants dogs over six months, microchipped, vaccinated and wormed, bans some breeds and keeps dogs off pools and wellness, with a pet's corner in its restaurants. Maistra welcomes dogs at designated restaurants and bars. Liburnia takes dogs up to 25 kg in its Opatija hotels. Aminess allows one pet per hotel room and two in apartments. Isabella Island Resort in Poreč takes dogs in selected rooms only, so confirm the room and the island boat before you book.
Two dogs
Valamar usually allows two pets per unit. Aminess is one per hotel room. Roxanich's PETSTAY package covers two small pets. Hotel Admiral and Hotel Excelsior let the second pet stay free when you book direct.
Truffle hunting
Zigante at Livade doesn't allow guests' own dogs on its truffle hunts, to keep the working dogs focused. Karlić Tartufi near Buzet runs hunts all year but doesn't publish a dog rule, so ask first. With your own dog, the Parenzana trail round Motovun is the better way to see truffle country.
Getting there
Pula airport is about 45 km from Rovinj. Rijeka airport serves Opatija, and Trieste is handy for Umag and Novigrad. UK and Irish flights to Pula are seasonal, so check current routes and the airline's pet rules. Plenty of people drive down through France or Germany and Slovenia, and the Liburnia and Valamar hotels are set up for guests arriving by car.
Buses
Neither Pula's nor Opatija's bus operator publishes a dog rule we could find. Ask locally or plan on having the car.
Vets
In Rovinj, Istra Vet at Gripole 68 (+385 52 553 907) and Veterinary Center Rovinj at Laste 9 (+385 52 813 214, mobile +385 98 334 092). Neither says it's open 24 hours, and we couldn't confirm a 24-hour vet anywhere in Istria, so ask your hotel for its emergency contact on arrival. The Maistra hotels say reception can arrange a vet in an emergency.
Best walks
The Golden Cape Forest Park (Zlatni rt) south of Rovinj, pine forest on the water with a quarry dog beach, reached along the Lone Bay promenade. The Lungomare from Volosko through Opatija and Ičići to Lovran, with the Slatina and Mali Raj dog beaches on the way. The Parenzana trail on the old narrow-gauge railway line, which loops round Motovun and passes near Grožnjan and Buje. Cape Kamenjak south of Pula for wild, protected coast, where Kamenjak beach and Mala Kolumbarica are listed for dogs.
When to go
Late spring and September to October. Many resort hotels only open from late March or April to October. Garden Suites Park in Poreč runs 28 March to 4 October 2026 and Garden Suites Umag 26 March to 1 November. For an off-season trip, Opatija's Liburnia hotels and Rovinj's Hotel Lone are open all year, and October brings the white truffle season to the Motovun forest.

Is Istria dog friendly?+

Yes, more than most of Croatia. Thirty hotels on our list take dogs, the tourist boards publish named dog beaches in Rovinj, Pula, Medulin and Opatija, and there are long car-free walks at the Golden Cape and on the Lungomare. The catch is that several of the top five-stars in Rovinj and Poreč don't take dogs, so check the hotel by name.

Which Istria hotels let dogs into the restaurant?+

Maistra's Grand Park, Monte Mulini and Lone in Rovinj and Petalon in Vrsar welcome dogs at designated restaurants and bars, so ask at check-in which ones. The Valamar hotels in Poreč have a pet's corner in their restaurants. Garden Suites Umag has dogs eat on designated terraces but not in the restaurants. Villa Valdibora and Palazzo Rainis keep dogs out of the restaurant.

How much do Istria hotels charge for dogs?+

Nothing at Roxanich on the PETSTAY package or at Hotel Imperial in Opatija booked direct. EUR 20 per pet at Villa Valdibora, EUR 25 at the Aminess hotels and EUR 25 a night at Palazzo Rainis. Valamar charges EUR 25 to 38 per pet per day in most hotels, and Hotel Ambasador, Hotel Kvarner and Villa Amalia charge EUR 70 per pet per day. Maistra doesn't publish its fee.

Where should I stay in Istria with a big dog?+

Opatija. Liburnia's hotels there, including Ambasador, Kvarner, Imperial, Palace Bellevue, Villa Amalia and Hotel Ičići, take dogs up to 25 kg, and the town has two fenced dog beaches. Avoid Palazzo Rainis (8 kg) and Garden Suites Umag (10 kg). Maistra and Valamar don't publish a weight limit, so ask.

Are there dog beaches in Rovinj?+

Yes, the tourist board lists several. Borik beach, the old quarry in the Golden Cape Forest Park, Škaraba and Cuvi coves, Kastelan cove towards Amarin, Veštar cove after the Mon Paradis campsite and Cisterna cove. The Lone Bay hotels sit right next to the Golden Cape.

Can I stay in Pula with my dog?+

We couldn't confirm any four or five-star hotel in Pula that takes dogs. Pula itself is good for dog beaches, with Valkane, Valovine, Stoja and Hidrobaza on the official list, so stay in Rovinj and drive down.

Can I bring my dog truffle hunting in Istria?+

Not at Zigante in Livade, which doesn't allow guests' dogs on the hunt. Karlić Tartufi near Buzet doesn't publish a rule, so ask first. The Parenzana trail round Motovun is the better walk with your own dog.

Can I leave my dog in the hotel room in Istria?+

Villa Valdibora in Rovinj is the only hotel here that allows it outright, as long as reception knows and the sign is on the door. The Valamar and Aminess hotels and Hotel Nautica allow a short time with a sign on the door, but not while you're out of the hotel. Hotel Lone offers pet sitting for an extra charge.
