Where can my dog actually go?

Orange County is two different places for a dog. Huntington Beach is the dog end of the coast, with an off-lead Dog Beach open every day of the year. Laguna Beach and Newport Beach both let dogs onto the sand on a lead, but only at set hours. Our list here is short and we'd rather say so: four hotels, two in Huntington Beach, one in Laguna Beach and one in Costa Mesa. We have nothing listed yet in Dana Point, Newport Beach, Irvine, Anaheim, San Clemente or on Catalina.

What separates the four is where the dog is allowed to be, not the fee. Paséa Hotel & Spa is the clear leader. Dogs can join you, on a lead and supervised, at Treehouse on PCH, Blend Café and Lōrea, there's a dog menu at Lōrea, and the hotel has its own private dog park on site called Paw-Séa. Dogs aren't at the Ninth Island Pool. Kimpton Shorebreak takes dogs of any size at no charge and hands out beds, bowls and treats on request, but it doesn't publish a rule for its restaurant or pool, and there's no relief area on the property. Avenue of the Arts in Costa Mesa has a lakeside dog walk with waste stations on its own grounds. Hotel Joaquin in Laguna takes one small dog in the room and publishes nothing about shared areas, so ask before you book.

Fees run from nothing at Kimpton Shorebreak, through USD 75 a stay for up to two pets at Avenue of the Arts and USD 100 per pet at Hotel Joaquin, to USD 150 a stay at Paséa, which is waived if you book its Very Important Pet Package. The weight limits matter more. Hotel Joaquin takes one dog under 30 lbs (about 13.6 kg) and Avenue of the Arts caps at 35 lbs (about 15.9 kg) each. Paséa and Kimpton Shorebreak have no weight limit at all, so a big dog belongs in Huntington Beach.

A few things to know before you pick a town. Hotel Joaquin is adults only, so every guest must be 18 or over. In Laguna, The Ranch at Laguna Beach doesn't allow pets or emotional support animals, and in Newport Beach VEA Newport Beach doesn't take pets. Around the Anaheim resort area, The Westin Anaheim Resort, the JW Marriott and the Hilton Anaheim all say no to pets. And Crystal Cove State Park, which sits between Laguna and Newport, keeps dogs to paved areas only, so it isn't a beach option.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Huntington Dog Beach
Open every day, all year, from 5am to 10pm, along Pacific Coast Highway between Seapoint and Goldenwest Streets. Dogs stay on a lead in the car parks, on the bluff and until they reach the sand, and the sand itself is lead optional. There's no fencing and the beach runs beside the highway, so only let a dog off if the recall is solid. The two metered car parks cost USD 2 an hour and take cards only.
Dog Beach rules
Pick up straight away. No puppies under four months, no females in heat and no aggressive or sick dogs. Your dog needs a collar with current tags, and vaccinations and licence up to date.
Laguna Beach city beaches
The hours published locally are before 9am and after 6pm only from 15 June to 10 September, and 9am to 9pm from 11 September to 14 June, on a lead of six feet or shorter at all times. That comes from the town's visitor information, not from the city's own ordinance, so check the City of Laguna Beach rule before you plan a beach day around it.
Newport Beach
The city doesn't allow dogs on the beach or on any beachfront sidewalk between 10am and 4:30pm, all year round. Outside those hours dogs are allowed on a lead of no more than six feet. Off-lead dogs aren't allowed in any public space in the city, parks and beaches included.
Crystal Cove State Park
Dogs are allowed on paved areas only. They aren't allowed on the beach, in the backcountry or in the Deer Canyon, Lower Moro and Upper Moro campgrounds. Service animals are the exception.
Weight limits
No limit at Paséa or Kimpton Shorebreak. 35 lbs (about 15.9 kg) per dog at Avenue of the Arts and under 30 lbs (about 13.6 kg) at Hotel Joaquin.
Two dogs
Avenue of the Arts takes two per room on one fee. Kimpton Shorebreak sets no limit on the number of pets. Hotel Joaquin takes one dog per room. Paséa doesn't publish a number, so ask when you book.
Catalina by ferry
Catalina Express carries pets with a paid pet ticket and a signed waiver for each departure, one animal per passenger. Every animal must be on a lead and in a full-face, commercially made muzzle or an airline-style carrier, in the boarding line and for the whole crossing. Animals stay on deck beside you, off the seats, and aren't allowed in the Commodore Lounge. Boats leave from Dana Point, Long Beach and San Pedro. We have no Catalina hotel listed yet.
Best walks
Huntington Dog Beach, on Pacific Coast Highway between Seapoint and Goldenwest Streets, is the one place on this coast where a dog can be off the lead on the sand and in the surf. Paw-Séa, the private dog park at Paséa, covers the quick outings if you're staying there, and the lake walk at Avenue of the Arts in Costa Mesa does the same job inland. In Laguna Beach and Newport Beach the sand is a walk on a six-foot lead within the permitted hours. At Crystal Cove State Park you're on the paved areas only.
When to go
Huntington Dog Beach is open every day of the year, so there's no bad month for the off-lead end of the county. Laguna is the one that changes. From 15 June to 10 September the published hours keep dogs off the city beaches between 9am and 6pm, and from 11 September to 14 June they run from 9am to 9pm, so mid-September onwards gives you the middle of the day back. Newport Beach's 10am to 4:30pm rule applies all year, which makes it an early morning or evening beach whenever you go.

Dogs are allowed on the city beaches on a lead of six feet or shorter, but the published summer hours are before 9am and after 6pm only, and it's worth checking the city's own rule before you travel. We list one hotel in Laguna Beach itself, Hotel Joaquin, which takes one dog under 30 lbs. The most dog-friendly part of Orange County is Huntington Beach, further up the coast.

Where can dogs go off lead on the beach in Orange County?+

Huntington Dog Beach, between Seapoint and Goldenwest Streets on Pacific Coast Highway. It's open daily from 5am to 10pm all year and the sand is lead optional. Dogs must be on a lead in the car parks and on the bluff, and there's no fence between the beach and the highway.

Nothing at Kimpton Shorebreak in Huntington Beach, with no deposit either. USD 75 a stay for up to two pets at Avenue of the Arts in Costa Mesa, USD 100 per pet at Hotel Joaquin in Laguna Beach and USD 150 a stay at Paséa, waived with its Very Important Pet Package. The fees at Avenue of the Arts and Hotel Joaquin are non-refundable.

On paved areas only. Dogs aren't allowed on the beach, in the backcountry or in the park's three campgrounds, so it isn't a beach stop with a dog.

Are there dog-friendly hotels near Disneyland?+

Catalina Express takes pets with a paid pet ticket and a signed waiver, one animal per passenger, on a lead and in a full-face muzzle or an airline-style carrier for the whole crossing. Dana Point is the departure port inside Orange County. We haven't listed a Catalina hotel yet, so sort out where you're staying before you buy the ticket.
