Where can my dog actually go?

Lake Constance is one of the easiest places in Europe to travel with a dog. Dogs ride free on the main lake boats, the Mainau flower island lets them in on a lead, several towns have designated dog beaches, and in Lindau dogs may swim from any freely accessible shore. Seventeen hotels on our list take dogs, spread round the German, Austrian and Swiss shores, from Lindau island and Bregenz to Konstanz, Überlingen and Meersburg.

The standard hotel rule round the lake is dogs in the room and on the terrace, not in the restaurant or at the breakfast buffet, and what separates the good ones is how they get round it. Bad Hotel Überlingen has the best access story here, with dogs in the bath garden and the villa garden, in the lake for a swim and on the terrace with you in good weather. YachtHotel Helvetia on Lindau island lets dogs go anywhere except the spa, and the restaurant just needs notice. Romantik Hotel Johanniter-Kreuz is one of very few that brings the dog to dinner in the restaurant, by arrangement. Hotel City Krone in Friedrichshafen keeps dogs out of the breakfast room but lets you take your plate to the bar and lobby and eat there with the dog. Hotel Halm, Hotel Traube am See and Hotel Schwärzler keep dogs out of their restaurants.

Fees run from EUR 10 a night at Romantik Hotel Barbarossa in Konstanz, through EUR 15 to EUR 25 at most four-stars, up to EUR 30 per dog at Bad Hotel Überlingen and EUR 36 at Hotel Reutemann-Seegarten in Lindau. Almost nobody publishes a weight limit, and Hotel Haus Seehang and Hotel Traube am See take small dogs only. For a big dog, Bad Hotel Überlingen is the pick. It takes two dogs, sets no small-dog rule and has its own lake access, but confirm your dog's size when you book.

The very top of the lake is thin for dogs. There's no five-star on our list. The Bayerischer Hof in Lindau doesn't take dogs and sends them to its sister, the Reutemann-Seegarten next door, which does. And remember this lake has three countries on it. Crossing into Switzerland or Austria, your dog needs a microchip and an EU pet passport with the rabies vaccination recorded.

What happens when you get there

Where dogs can swim
Dogs are kept out of the lidos (Strandbäder) right round the lake, but that's the paid bathing spots only, not the open shore. In the Lindau district they can swim from any freely accessible shore, including the Hintere Insel, the Gerberschanze, the Toskanapark, Uferpark Wäsen, Giebelbach and the Lindenhofpark. There are designated dog beaches in Friedrichshafen, Langenargen, Dingelsdorf and Konstanz, and a stretch between Unteruhldingen and Meersburg where dogs can swim.
Boats
Dogs travel free on the BSB, the Swiss lake boats, the Untersee and Rhine boats and Vorarlberg Lines. The Konstanz to Friedrichshafen catamaran is the exception, where a dog needs a child ticket each way. Smaller operators set their own terms, so check.
Buses
In the bodo network round Lindau, Friedrichshafen and Überlingen, dogs ride free. On the Konstanz side (VHB) a dog pays the child fare. Lindau's city bus takes dogs, but larger dogs must wear a muzzle.
Lead rules
Überlingen requires a lead on all public land and keeps dogs off the Hofstatt and Münsterplatz during market hours. Lindau requires leads at public lake access points, across the whole Hintere Insel, on the marked lawns in the Lindenhofpark and Holdereggenpark, and in the Luitpoldpark. April to August is nesting season, so keep dogs close in woods and fields.
Dogs at breakfast
Mostly a no. Bad Hotel Überlingen, Johanniter-Kreuz, Hotel Halm, Hotel Traube am See and Haus Seehang all keep dogs out of the breakfast room. City Krone lets you eat with the dog in the bar and lobby instead, and guests at bodenseezeit in Lindau-Zech have had breakfast with their dog on the roof terrace.
Crossing borders
From the UK, your dog needs the usual Animal Health Certificate route into the EU. Crossing into Switzerland or Austria, it needs a microchip and an EU pet passport with the rabies vaccination recorded. Listed breeds often face extra rules, so check before you cross.
Sights
Mainau lets dogs in free on a lead, but not in the butterfly house or the castle's exhibition rooms. The Pfahlbauten at Unteruhldingen and Burg Meersburg take dogs on a lead, and the Pfänder cable car in Bregenz carries them free. Lindau's Stadtmuseum doesn't take dogs.

Best walks
Überlingen's lakeside promenade, the Uferpromenade into Meersburg's lower town, the Uferpark and harbour in Friedrichshafen with the Eriskircher Ried nature reserve just east, the Bregenz waterfront and the lakeside path from Lochau towards Lindau, the Hintere Insel on Lindau island, and the Bodanrück woods above Wallhausen. Take the Pfänder cable car up for the viewpoint trails, and pick off sections of the flat, 273 km Bodensee-Radweg, using the free boats to skip the long stretches.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are the easy months for a dog. From June to August the lidos are in season and the popular free shore spots, the Gerberschanze and the Lindenhofpark in Lindau, get very crowded. April to August is nesting season in the countryside, so keep dogs close in woods and fields. Mainau drops to its lower winter price from 19 October to 19 March.
