Lake Garda splits neatly for dog owners. The grand lakeside hotels take small dogs with grace, the adults-only design hotels mostly refuse. Thirteen hotels made the cut. Grand Hotel Fasano at Gardone lets small dogs into the breakfast room and the Osteria, which is rare at five stars. Falkensteiner at Salò runs the brand's Welcome Dogs programme and admits dogs to part of its restaurant. Grand Hotel Terme Sirmione takes dogs of any size for EUR 20.

The find is Sogno del Benaco at Limone, a 3★ we kept because it hands out a welcome kit, lets dogs eat with you outdoors, and has a private lawn right on the water next to the beach.

Beaches vary by commune. Lazise and Bardolino on the eastern shore run municipal dog beaches, Riva del Garda has dog areas at Parco della Pace and Sabbioni, and the Ciclopista del Garda cliff path at Limone is a spectacular lead walk.

Lazise and Bardolino have municipal dog beaches on the eastern shore. Riva del Garda has dog areas at Parco della Pace and near Spiaggia Sabbioni. Most hotel beaches ban dogs.
Weight limits
Fasano 15 kg, Lefay 12 kg, Villa Cortine 12 kg, Vision and Antico Borgo 10 kg combined for two dogs. Terme Sirmione and Querceto take any size.
Ferries
Navigazione Laghi boats take dogs on a lead and muzzled, with a reduced ticket. Useful for hopping between Sirmione, Gardone and Riva.
Adults-only hotels
EALA, Val di Sogno and Ocelle are adults-only and refuse dogs. Lido Palace and Villa del Sogno also say no.
