Where can my dog actually go?

Lake Tahoe is better for a dog on the trails than on the sand. Dogs are allowed on every section of the Tahoe Rim Trail, while California's state parks keep dogs off most of their beaches and Sand Harbor on the Nevada side only takes them from 15 October to 15 April. Seven hotels on our list take dogs, which is a short list for a lake this size. Four are in South Lake Tahoe, two are in Truckee and one is in downtown Reno, the gateway city. We have nothing listed yet in Olympic Valley, Tahoe City and the West Shore, Kings Beach, Incline Village or Stateline.

What separates them is where the dog can be once you've checked in. The Landing is well ahead. Every room takes dogs, and they're welcome on the lakeside dining patio, on the pool patio beside you, on the rooftop terrace on a lead, in the backyard, in the lifts and on the hotel shuttle. Station House Inn has dogs on the heated patio at Toulouse, its restaurant, when the patio is open for the season, and keeps treats in the lobby. Fireside Lodge hands over a proper kit: water and food bowls, a blanket, a towel for muddy paws, waste bags and a welcome treat. Desolation Hotel supplies bed and furniture covers, which you must use. At Desolation and at Gravity Haus in Truckee a dog can never be left alone in the room, so plan days your dog can join.

Fees are mostly per night here, which adds up. The two flat fees are Martis Valley Lodge, USD 75 for one to four nights and USD 125 for five or more, and Renaissance Reno at USD 75 a stay. Fireside Lodge charges USD 35 a night for the first pet and USD 15 for each extra one. Station House Inn is USD 50 per animal per night, The Landing USD 75 a night and Desolation Hotel USD 75 per pet per night. Gravity Haus charges a pet fee at booking but doesn't publish the amount, and waives it for members. Martis Valley Lodge is the only one with a published weight cap, 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg). The rest publish no limit, so with a big dog start with The Landing and confirm when you book.

Two names to cross off before you search. Edgewood Tahoe in Stateline doesn't allow pets on the property, service animals only. Grand Sierra Resort in Reno no longer allows animals either. And if you're coming in winter, California runs chain controls on the mountain roads, so read that section below before you set off.

What happens when you get there

California state park beaches
California State Parks requires a lead of six feet or less at all times and doesn't permit dogs on most beaches. At D.L. Bliss and Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point dogs are allowed in developed areas only, meaning campsites, paved roads and paths, fire roads and car parks. Dogs aren't allowed in most areas of Emerald Bay State Park. This covers the state park units on the California side, not every beach on the lake.
Kings Beach
At Kings Beach State Recreation Area dogs are allowed at the Dog Beach at the east end of the park, in the rocky areas. They aren't permitted on the sandy beach.
Sand Harbor
On the Nevada side, pets are only allowed off season, from 15 October to 15 April, on a lead of no more than six feet. There are no dogs at Sand Harbor for the whole summer.
Other beaches
We haven't been able to confirm the dog rules for the lake's other public beaches, including the one across the street from The Landing. Check the managing agency's own page or ask your hotel before you walk down with a towel.
Trails
Dogs are allowed on all sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail. Keep your dog on a lead in high use areas, at trailheads, around other users and on steep or slippery ground, and under voice control elsewhere. Rules vary with the agency managing each stretch, and the lead and permit rules for Desolation Wilderness aren't confirmed, so check before heading in. Near Truckee, Donner Memorial State Park allows dogs on a six-foot lead on the Lakeside Interpretive Trail, the Zig Zag Trail, fire roads and along the shore.
Leaving your dog in the room
Not allowed at Desolation Hotel or Gravity Haus Truckee-Tahoe, and the other hotels don't publish a rule. Black Bear Lodge in South Lake Tahoe, which doesn't take pets, recommends Hair of the Dog Pet Concierge for day care and overnight boarding. Ring them for terms and availability.
Winter roads
Caltrans runs three chain control levels. R-1 requires chains except on passenger cars and light trucks under 6,000 lbs with snow tyres on two drive wheels, which must still carry chains. R-2 requires chains or traction devices on everything except four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles with snow tyres on all four wheels, which must still carry traction devices. R-3, which is rare, means chains on every vehicle. Check Caltrans QuickMap or ring 800-427-7623 before you leave, and check Nevada's rules separately if you're driving up from Reno.
Bears
This is bear country. Keep food and anything scented out of sight in the car, use the bear lockers, put rubbish in the proper bins, keep your distance and never feed a bear.
Best walks
The Tahoe Rim Trail is the big one, with dogs allowed on every section. At Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee, dogs on a six-foot lead can walk the Lakeside Interpretive Trail, the Zig Zag Trail, the fire roads and the shore. For water, the Dog Beach at the east end of Kings Beach State Recreation Area takes dogs in the rocky areas, and Sand Harbor opens to dogs on a lead from 15 October to 15 April. At D.L. Bliss and Sugar Pine Point you're limited to paved roads and paths, fire roads and the developed areas.
When to go
It depends on what you want from the lake. Sand Harbor only takes dogs from 15 October to 15 April, so autumn and winter are the months for that shoreline, and summer rules it out. Winter also brings chain controls on the California mountain roads, so carry chains and check conditions before you drive. The heated patio at Toulouse, at Station House Inn, is seasonal, so ask whether it's open for your dates if dinner out with your dog is the point of the trip.

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Lake Tahoe

Is Lake Tahoe dog friendly?+

On the trails, yes. Dogs are allowed on every section of the Tahoe Rim Trail. The beaches are harder work, because California's state parks keep dogs off most of theirs and Sand Harbor only takes dogs from 15 October to 15 April. Seven hotels on our list take dogs, all in South Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Reno.

Which Lake Tahoe hotels let dogs join you at the restaurant?+

The Landing welcomes dogs on its lakeside dining patio. Station House Inn welcomes dogs on the heated patio at Toulouse when it's open for the season. The other five hotels don't publish a restaurant rule, so ask when you book.

How much do Lake Tahoe hotels charge for dogs?+

USD 35 a night for the first pet at Fireside Lodge, then USD 15 for each extra one. USD 50 per animal per night at Station House Inn, USD 75 a night at The Landing and USD 75 per pet per night at Desolation Hotel. The flat fees are USD 75 a stay at Renaissance Reno and USD 75 at Martis Valley Lodge for up to four nights, rising to USD 125 for five or more.

Where should I stay in Lake Tahoe with a big dog?+

No hotel on our list states that it takes dogs of any size, so this one needs a phone call. The Landing takes dogs in every room and publishes no weight cap, which makes it the first place to ask. Martis Valley Lodge is clear at 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg), and at Station House Inn the Cozy King room is recommended for dogs under 25 lbs.

Are dogs allowed on the beach at Lake Tahoe?+

In a few places. The Dog Beach at the east end of Kings Beach State Recreation Area takes dogs in the rocky areas but not on the sand, and Sand Harbor takes dogs on a lead from 15 October to 15 April only. D.L. Bliss and Sugar Pine Point keep dogs to developed areas, and most of Emerald Bay State Park is closed to them. For any other beach, check the official page first.

Can I leave my dog alone in a Lake Tahoe hotel room?+

Not at Desolation Hotel or Gravity Haus Truckee-Tahoe, where dogs can't be left unattended. The other five don't publish a rule, so ask. Hair of the Dog Pet Concierge in South Lake Tahoe is a boarding and day care option recommended locally.

Does Edgewood Tahoe allow dogs?+

No. Edgewood Tahoe doesn't allow pets on the property, with service animals the only exception. Grand Sierra Resort in Reno has also stopped taking animals.

Can I bring two dogs to a Lake Tahoe hotel?+

Yes at most of them. Desolation Hotel, Station House Inn, Martis Valley Lodge, Gravity Haus and Renaissance Reno all take two per room, and Fireside Lodge prices for additional pets. Watch the maths at the per-pet, per-night hotels: two dogs at Desolation Hotel is USD 150 a night.

Do I need snow chains to drive to Lake Tahoe in winter?+

On the California side you may. When chain controls are up you must stop and fit chains where the signs say so, and under the lower levels even exempt vehicles still have to carry them. Check Caltrans QuickMap or ring 800-427-7623 before you set off.
