Where can my dog actually go?

The Loire is good dog country and better than its reputation. Chenonceau, Villandry and the Chambord estate park all take dogs on a lead, small carried dogs can go inside Chenonceau, Villandry, Amboise and the Clos Lucé, and the flat Loire à Vélo paths along the river make easy walking from almost every town. In France a dog on a terrace or under a restaurant table is normal, and the valley is no different. Twenty-four hotels on our list take dogs, mostly châteaux and townhouses, clustered round Amboise, Tours, Blois and Saumur.

What separates them is the dining room, and the Blois end is where the rules are written down. Fleur de Loire in Blois lets dogs into its Amour Blanc restaurant but not Christophe Hay's gastronomic table, and it's the only hotel in the valley offering dog-sitting, so you can have that dinner too. Les Hauts de Loire at Onzain welcomes dogs at the bistro but not in the gastronomic restaurant or on its terrace. Château Belmont in Tours and Château de la Rozelle south of Blois keep dogs out of the restaurant altogether. Relais de Chambord says every room is pet-friendly and has the Chambord estate park at the door.

Fees run from EUR 10 a night at Le Clos d'Amboise and EUR 12 at the two Saumur hotels, Anne d'Anjou and Saint-Pierre, through EUR 15 at Château de Pray and EUR 20 at Château d'Artigny and Château de Noizay, to EUR 25 at Château Belmont, EUR 35 at Les Hauts de Loire and EUR 40 at Fleur de Loire. Les Trésorières in Tours takes dogs under 10 kg only. Nobody else publishes a weight limit, so for a big dog Relais de Chambord, where every room takes dogs and the walled park starts at the door, or the 70 hectares of woods and lakes at Les Hauts de Loire are the picks. Ring ahead with your dog's size.

Two warnings. The Château de Cheverny doesn't let pets into the estate at all, and the Château de Saumur admits only guide and assistance dogs. Chambord takes dogs in the park but not inside the château, the formal gardens or the stables, even carried. And in Amboise the Pavillon des Lys, Au Charme Rabelaisien and Maison Voltaire don't take dogs, while Chinon has no four-star on our list, so base yourself in Saumur or Azay-le-Rideau for that end of the valley.

What happens when you get there

Châteaux that take dogs
Chenonceau takes dogs on a lead in the gardens and small dogs carried inside. Villandry is the same, dogs on a lead through the gardens and only small dogs in a bag or basket inside. At Amboise dogs go on a lead in the gardens and carried inside the Logis, but not in the underground passages or on the Minimes tower tours. The Clos Lucé takes dogs on a lead in the park and carried inside.
Châteaux that don't
Cheverny doesn't let pets into the estate. The Château de Saumur takes guide and assistance dogs only. Chambord allows dogs in the estate park but not in the château, the French formal gardens or the stables, even carried. Chaumont lists dogs on a short lead for the garden festival and the park, and the château is listed separately, so assume not inside and ask at the gate.
Dogs at dinner
Terraces are dog-friendly throughout the valley. Hotel dining rooms vary. Fleur de Loire and Les Hauts de Loire take dogs at their second restaurant only, and Château Belmont and Château de la Rozelle keep dogs out of the restaurant. Most others don't publish a rule, so ask.
Loire à Vélo
The shared, mostly flat riverside route is the easiest dog walking between towns, on the Blois quays, round Amboise and the Île d'Or, Tours and the Île Simon, and Saumur and the Île d'Offard. It's a cycle route, so keep the dog on a lead. If you want to ride with a small dog, a trailer or basket is the practical answer.
House rules
Château de l'Aubrière has the fullest written rules: announce the dog when booking, on a lead in all shared areas, vaccinations and flea treatment up to date, and never left alone in the room. It shares its park with a horse, hens, deer and two resident dogs. Château de Perreux takes dogs in designated rooms only, so contact it before booking.
Getting there
Dogs can't fly in the cabin into the UK, so most UK and Irish owners drive, by Eurotunnel or a Channel ferry and then roughly 500 km from Calais to Amboise, or less from Caen, Le Havre or Saint-Malo to Saumur. SNCF generally takes small dogs in a carrier and bigger dogs on a lead with their own ticket, so check current terms before booking a TGV to Tours.
Getting around
Car or bike country. The châteaux are spread along 150 km of river, and the useful links between them are the roads and the Loire à Vélo route.
Vets
We haven't found a 24-hour vet in the valley. Ask the hotel for the out-of-hours number when you arrive.
Best walks
The Loire à Vélo path along the river and its levees, from the Blois quays to the Île d'Or at Amboise, the Île Simon in Tours and the Île d'Offard in Saumur. The Chambord estate park on a lead, with paths along the Cosson. The gardens at Chenonceau and Villandry, and the Cher riverside past Chenonceau. The Forêt de Russy south of Blois, the Sologne woods round Cheverny, and the Indre banks through Azay-le-Rideau and Montbazon.
When to go
May, June and September are the best dog months. July and August can be hot, and the château gardens have little shade on the gravel, so walk early and save the gardens for the morning. Several hotel restaurants close for weeks in autumn and winter, Château de Pray's from 26 October to 10 November 2026 for one, so check before you plan dinners around them.

Is the Loire Valley dog friendly?+

Yes. Chenonceau, Villandry and the Chambord park take dogs on a lead, the Loire à Vélo paths give flat walking from nearly every town, and twenty-four hotels on our list take dogs. The exceptions are Cheverny and the Château de Saumur, which don't admit pets.

Which Loire châteaux allow dogs?+

Château de l'Aubrière says never. Fleur de Loire offers dog-sitting on request, for a fee and subject to availability, which is the only service of its kind we've found in the valley. Everywhere else, ask when you book.

Where should I stay in Amboise with a dog?+

Le Relais d'Amboise is on the quay below the château, Le Clos d'Amboise has its own park at EUR 10 a night, and Le Manoir Saint Thomas is a short walk from the Clos Lucé park. Château de Pray and Château de Perreux are just outside town. The Pavillon des Lys, Au Charme Rabelaisien and Maison Voltaire don't take dogs.

Can I take my dog to Chambord?+

Into the estate park, yes, on a lead. Not inside the château, the French formal gardens or the stables, even carried or in a bag. Relais de Chambord faces the château and every room takes dogs.
