Where can my dog actually go?

This is some of the best dog country in Europe. In the south of France dogs go into restaurants almost everywhere, not just onto the terrace, and a dog under a café table in Saint-Rémy or L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is completely normal. It's inland and it's car country, so the walking is village lanes, vineyards, olive groves and river quays rather than beaches. Twenty-five hotels on our list take dogs, from village houses in Lourmarin to palace hotels inside the Avignon ramparts.

The hotels don't always match the street. Many of the best-known names say nothing about where a dog can go, and three that do keep dogs out of their own dining rooms: Château des Alpilles, Domaine de Manville and Le Mas des Herbes Blanches. The clear exception is the Beaumier trio. Le Moulin and Le Galinier in Lourmarin say in writing that dogs are welcome in the restaurants, the bars and every public room, and the only place they can't go is into the pool itself. Capelongue in Bonnieux says dogs are welcome throughout the property except in the pools. Le Moulin is the best dining-access hotel in the region, and Le Galinier is the same story at five-star level.

Fees run from EUR 15 at Le Phébus, Vallon de Valrugues and the Grand Hôtel Henri, through EUR 20 at La Ferme de la Huppe and La Régalido and EUR 25 at the Beaumier hotels and Valmouriane, up to EUR 35 a day at Le Mas des Herbes Blanches and EUR 50 at Coquillade Provence. Le Moulin adds a EUR 100 a night refundable deposit. For a big dog, Le Galinier and Le Moulin are the picks. Both give 25 to 30 kg as a guide, apply it flexibly and take one or two dogs depending on the room. Le Mas des Herbes Blanches takes one dog under 10 kg and Le Phébus takes small dogs only.

Plenty of names that come up in a Provence search don't take dogs. B Design & Spa in Le Paradou, Le Couvent in Apt, La Maison sur la Sorgue and Hôtel de la Fontaine in Lourmarin are all a no. And a lot of the famous addresses on our list, including La Bastide de Gordes, La Mirande, Hôtel de Tourrel and Les Bories, accept dogs but publish no fee, weight or area rules, so ring ahead and ask about breakfast and the restaurant before you book.

    A hilltop estate in Bonnieux where dogs are welcome throughout the property, with the pools the only exception. It doesn't name the restaurant and bar separately, so confirm those when you book. Dogs can be left in the room and the Forêt des Cèdres is a short drive up the hill. EUR 25 per dog a night, weight and number not published.

What happens when you get there

Restaurants
Dogs on terraces are normal everywhere and usually inside too, at the owner's say-so. The hotel dining rooms are the exception. Château des Alpilles, Domaine de Manville and Le Mas des Herbes Blanches keep dogs out of theirs, while Le Moulin and Le Galinier let them in.
Summer fire rules
These apply to the forested hills only, not to villages, vineyards, hotel grounds or canal paths. From 1 June to 30 September access to the Alpilles massif is regulated, and in the Vaucluse the Petit and Grand Luberon, the Monts de Vaucluse and the Vallée d'Apt get a daily colour level from open to closed all day. Check risque-prevention-incendie.fr after 18:00 for the next day before a summer hike. The Forêt des Cèdres above Bonnieux stays open except at the extreme level.
Heat
July and August regularly hit the mid-30s °C inland. Avignon's pavements and the white limestone around Les Baux are hard on paws at midday, so walk early and late.
Market days
Mornings, roughly 8:00 to 12:30. Tuesday Gordes, Wednesday Saint-Rémy, Thursday L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Maussane, Friday Lourmarin and Bonnieux, Saturday Apt, and the big Sunday antiques market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Dogs at markets are normal but they're packed in summer.
Sights
The Palais des Papes in Avignon doesn't admit dogs, even on a lead or carried in a bag, apart from guide and assistance dogs. Rules for the Château des Baux, the Carrières des Lumières, the Pont d'Avignon and the Château de Lourmarin aren't published clearly, so ask at the gate.
Getting there
Dogs can't fly in the cabin into the UK, so most UK and Irish owners drive, Eurotunnel or a Channel ferry and then about 1,000 km from Calais to Avignon. Avignon TGV is the rail gateway, and SNCF generally takes small dogs in a carrier and bigger dogs on a lead and muzzled with a ticket. Check current SNCF terms before you go.
Getting around
The villages are car country. In Avignon the Orizo buses and trams take dogs, small ones free in a bag or basket on your lap, bigger ones muzzled, on a lead and with their own ticket.
Vets
Le Galinier and Le Moulin name the Clinique Vétérinaire in Cadenet as the nearest vet to Lourmarin. There's no 24-hour emergency vet to name here yet, so ask your hotel for the out-of-hours number when you arrive.
Best walks
The Sorgue quays through L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and the river path upstream to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the Aigue Brun valley and the Combe de Lourmarin on the north side of Lourmarin, the Forêt des Cèdres on the Petit Luberon ridge above Bonnieux, the Véroncle gorge trail and its old mills between Murs and Gordes, the stone path from Gordes down to the Abbaye de Sénanque, the Val d'Enfer below Les Baux, the Canal des Alpilles around Saint-Rémy and the paths by the Lac du Peirou, and the long flat riverside paths on the Île de la Barthelasse across the Pont Daladier from Avignon. The Véloroute du Calavon runs flat along an old railway line between Apt and Coustellet.
When to go
April to early June and September to October are the best dog months, warm enough for terraces without the heat. Lavender around Sénanque and on the Vaucluse plateau usually flowers from mid-June to mid-July, but that's also peak heat and fire-rule season, so plan early-morning walks and check the hill access map the night before. July and August run into the mid-30s °C and the markets are at their most crowded.

Is Provence dog friendly?+

Very. Dogs go into restaurants almost everywhere, not just onto the terrace, and dogs at markets and in cafés are normal. Twenty-five hotels on our list across the Luberon, the Alpilles and Avignon take dogs. The thing to check is the hotel's own dining room, because some keep dogs out even though the village restaurants let them in.

Which Luberon hotels let dogs into the restaurant?+

Le Moulin and Le Galinier in Lourmarin welcome dogs in their restaurants and bars, with only the pool off limits. Capelongue in Bonnieux welcomes dogs throughout the property except the pools, so confirm the restaurant when you book. Château des Alpilles, Domaine de Manville and Le Mas des Herbes Blanches don't allow dogs in their dining rooms. Most others don't publish a rule, so ask when you book.

How much do Provence hotels charge for dogs?+

Where should I stay in Provence with a big dog?+

Le Galinier or Le Moulin in Lourmarin. Both use 25 to 30 kg as a guide, apply it flexibly and let the dog into the restaurant and bar. Avoid Le Mas des Herbes Blanches, which takes one dog under 10 kg, and Le Phébus, which takes small dogs only.

Where should I stay in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with a dog?+

Hôtel de Tourrel, Le Petit Hôtel and Le Saint-Rémy are in the centre and take dogs, but none publishes a fee or area rules, so ask first. Vallon de Valrugues charges EUR 15 per dog a night and Valmouriane EUR 25. Château des Alpilles takes dogs only in a few parquet-floored rooms and not in the dining rooms.

Can I walk my dog in the Luberon hills in summer?+

Often, but check first. From June to September the forested massifs, including the Alpilles, the Luberon ridges and the Monts de Vaucluse, can be restricted or closed on high fire-risk days. The map at risque-prevention-incendie.fr updates at 18:00 for the next day. Villages, vineyards, canal paths and hotel grounds aren't affected.

Can dogs go into the Palais des Papes in Avignon?+

No. Pets aren't allowed inside the monument, even on a lead or carried in a bag. Only guide and assistance dogs are admitted.

Can I leave my dog in the hotel room in Provence?+

At Le Moulin, Le Galinier and Capelongue, yes, if the dog is quiet, and housekeeping may reschedule if it's unsettled. La Ferme de la Huppe is a clear no, dogs can't be left alone in the room there. Most other hotels don't publish a rule.
