Where can my dog actually go?
Madeira has only five dog-friendly hotels in our catalogue, and they are five of the best in Europe. Reid's Palace runs a Dogtel programme with a chef-prepared dog meal every day, a supervised dog swimming pool, grooming, day care, a 24-hour vet on call, and dogs under 15 kg eat with you in most restaurants. The Reserve and Savoy Palace give a bed, bowl, a chef's meal and designated restaurant areas, and donate EUR 10 of every night's fee to local animal welfare. Meliá Madeira Mare hands over a kit with a blanket, feeder and travel dispenser.
Everything else refuses. Royal Savoy, Barceló Oldtown, Allegro, Casa Branca, Porto Mare, the Cliff Bay suites, Quinta Mirabela, Galomar and the Riu all say no, and so do the north-coast quintas. If you want to go, book one of the five.
The walking is the point of Madeira. The levadas, the irrigation channels that thread the island, take dogs on a lead, and the Lido promenade in Funchal runs west along the sea to Praia Formosa. There's no sand to speak of, so this is a walking island, not a beach island.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Levadas
- The levada walks take dogs on a lead. Some have drops and tunnels, so pick the gentler ones like the Levada dos Tornos or the Levada do Norte for a first outing.
- No beaches
- Madeira has almost no sand. Calheta and Machico have man-made beaches with seasonal rules. Plan on promenades and levadas.
- Weight limits
- Reid's 15 kg for restaurant access, Savoy Palace and The Reserve 25 kg, Meliá 7 kg. Saccharum accepts pets in its Ocean Suite only.
- Flying
- Madeira's runway is exposed and flights divert in wind. Build a spare day in for the dog's sake.
- Fees
- EUR 25 at Meliá, EUR 35 at Reid's and Saccharum, EUR 80 at Savoy Palace, EUR 100 at The Reserve.
- Best walks
- The Lido promenade to Praia Formosa, the Levada dos Tornos above Monte, Parque de Santa Catarina in Funchal, and the Calheta marina front.
- When to go
- Year-round. April to June and September to November are the sweet spot for levada walking.
