Where can my dog actually go?

Marseille is a walking city with a long seafront, the Corniche Kennedy, and the Calanques National Park starting at the edge of town, where dogs are allowed on a lead on the paths but never on the sand or in the water. The catch is getting around. RTM, which runs the metro, trams and buses, carries only small animals in a closed bag, basket or cage on your lap, so a medium or large dog on a lead can't use public transport at all. Plan on walking, taxis or a hire car. Three hotels on our list take dogs, all in Marseille itself, between the Vieux-Port, Le Panier and La Joliette. Nothing in Cassis, Bandol or Sanary published terms we could stand behind yet.

None of the three says where the dog can go beyond the room, so the difference is in the welcome and the terms. Hôtel La Résidence du Vieux Port on the Quai du Port puts a water bowl and dog treats in the room and has balconies over the harbour. The InterContinental Marseille - Hotel Dieu, the city's flagship five-star up in Le Panier, takes dogs for a flat EUR 55 a stay with no weight or number limit stated. NH Collection Marseille in La Joliette has the clearest published terms in the city: dogs and cats up to 25 kg, two per room, in a limited number of rooms, so you contact the hotel to book. The honest no is just as useful. Hôtel C2, a five-star, lists dogs as not allowed, and so does the Splendid Hôtel & Spa in Bandol.

Fees are EUR 20 per animal at La Résidence du Vieux Port, though the hotel doesn't say whether that's per night or per stay, EUR 35 per night per pet at NH Collection and EUR 55 per stay at the InterContinental. NH Collection is the only one with a weight cap, at 25 kg. The other two publish no limit, which makes La Résidence du Vieux Port and the InterContinental the picks for a big dog, with a call ahead to confirm.

Two more things to know before you book. The city's general rule is that dogs aren't admitted on the beaches, in the parks or in the gardens, with a set of exceptions published by the city that we haven't been able to confirm beach by beach, so don't count on a named dog beach. And the Calanques massif closes to all walkers on high fire-risk days in summer, so check the daily access colour before you set out with the dog.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Public transport
Dogs can't travel on the RTM metro, tram or bus network. Only small animals in a closed basket, bag or cage on your lap are carried, free of charge, plus guide and assistance dogs on a lead. A medium or large dog means walking, taxis or a hire car. The Frioul ferry publishes nothing about animals, so ring the Gare Maritime before planning an island day.
Calanques National Park
In the park core dogs must be on a lead and are banned from the beaches. The park can close specific natural zones to dog walking, and the full list isn't published in a form we could read, so treat it as lead on the paths, never on the sand or in the water. The Frioul islands are inside the park and the same applies there. The whole massif closes to walkers on high fire-risk days in summer, so check the daily access colour first.
Beaches
The city's general rule is no dogs on the beaches, in the parks or in the gardens. There are published exceptions, and the stretch at Vieille Chapelle appears to be one, but the exact beaches and dates haven't been confirmed, so don't promise the dog a swim. At Cassis, assume no dogs on the sand at Port-Miou, Port-Pin or En-Vau under the national park rule.
Parks and walks
The tourist office's own dog list is a good one. Parc Pastré in the 8e, lead required in the lower part and off-lead allowed past the open canal, with shade. The pine path along the Canal de Marseille by the Roy d'Espagne residence. The Canal de Saint-Julien promenade in the 12e. Parc de la Moline, which has a 3,000 square metre dog exercise area. And the Huveaune trail from the David statue to the Palais des Sports at Sainte-Marguerite.
Trains from Paris
On SNCF a small animal travels in a bag or basket on your lap or at your feet. A dog on a lead must be muzzled for the whole journey and travel at your feet. Both pay a flat fare from EUR 10 per train, maximum two animals per traveller. There's no weight threshold on domestic TGV INOUI, only the container rule.
Cassis
No Cassis hotel has made the list yet, because none of the ones checked publishes dog terms you could rely on. The Cassis tourist office says nothing about dogs on its beach page and the Calanques boat operators set their own rules, so ask before booking a boat trip. The national park rule keeps dogs off the sand at the calanques.
Heat and shade
The Frioul islands have almost no shade, so go morning or evening in summer. The tourist office's own advice is that a dog in the Calanques needs stamina and plenty of water carried, and the paths are rock and scrub with little cover.
Fees
EUR 20 per animal at La Résidence du Vieux Port, per night or per stay not stated. EUR 35 per night per pet at NH Collection. EUR 55 per stay at the InterContinental. Guide dogs stay free at NH Collection.
Best walks
The Corniche Kennedy seafront from the Vieux-Port towards the Prado, the loop of the Vieux-Port quays and up through Le Panier to the Place des Moulins, the MuCEM esplanade and Fort Saint-Jean, the Parc du Pharo above the harbour mouth, Parc Pastré and the Canal de Marseille pine path in the 8e, the Canal de Saint-Julien promenade and the Huveaune trail to Sainte-Marguerite, and the Calanques paths on a lead on days the massif is open.
When to go
Spring and autumn, roughly April to June and September to October, for the Calanques and the Corniche without the heat. July and August bring fire-risk closures of the whole massif on the worst days, no shade on Frioul and beaches that are closed to dogs in any case. Winter is quiet and the city's hotels stay open, and the Corniche and the parks are at their best for a dog then.

Dog-friendly hotels in Marseille and Cassis

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Marseille and Cassis

Is Marseille dog friendly?+

For walking, yes. The Corniche, Le Panier, the harbour quays and the Calanques paths are all open to a dog on a lead, and three hotels on our list take dogs. For getting around, no. Dogs on a lead can't use the metro, trams or buses, and the beaches, parks and gardens are closed to dogs as a general rule.

Can dogs go on the Marseille metro or buses?+

No, unless they're small enough to travel in a closed bag, basket or cage on your lap. RTM doesn't carry dogs on a lead anywhere on its network. Guide and assistance dogs are the exception. Plan on walking, taxis or a hire car for a medium or large dog.

Can I take my dog to the Calanques?+

Yes, on a lead on the paths, and never on the beaches or in the water. The park can close certain zones to dogs and the massif shuts to everyone on high fire-risk days in summer, so check the daily access status before you go. Carry plenty of water, there's little shade.

Are dogs allowed on Marseille beaches?+

Not as a rule. The city keeps dogs off the beaches, the parks and the gardens, with some published exceptions. Vieille Chapelle looks like one of them, but the named beaches and dates haven't been confirmed, so check locally before you go rather than planning a beach day around the dog.

How much do Marseille hotels charge for dogs?+

EUR 20 per animal at Hôtel La Résidence du Vieux Port, EUR 35 per night per pet at NH Collection Marseille and EUR 55 per stay at the InterContinental Marseille - Hotel Dieu. Ask La Résidence whether its fee is per night or per stay, the hotel doesn't say.

Where should I stay in Marseille with a big dog?+

La Résidence du Vieux Port and the InterContinental publish no weight limit, so either is the starting point. NH Collection caps at 25 kg. Ring ahead with the dog's weight in any case, since no limit published isn't the same as any size welcomed.

Are there dog friendly hotels in Cassis?+

None has made our list yet. The Cassis hotels checked either don't publish dog terms or couldn't be read, so we can't tell you a fee, a weight limit or where the dog can sit. Base yourself in Marseille and drive out, and remember the national park keeps dogs off the sand at the calanques.

Which Marseille hotels allow dogs at breakfast?+

None of the three publishes a breakfast, restaurant or bar rule. La Résidence du Vieux Port, NH Collection and the InterContinental all confirm the dog in the room and leave the rest unsaid, so ask when you book and get it in writing if it matters to you.
