Where can my dog actually go?

Menorca is a finca island if you're bringing a dog. The best places to stay aren't the beach resorts, they're the converted farm estates inland around Alaior, Ciutadella and Sant Lluís, where your dog walks out of the door onto lanes, gardens and olive groves and the south-coast coves are 10 to 15 minutes away by car. Eleven hotels on our list take dogs. Most of the island's big-name luxury hotels don't, including Torralbenc, Cap Menorca, Faustino Gran, Can Albertí 1740, Menorca Experimental, the three Vestige properties, Seranova and both Artiem hotels.

What separates the ones that do is where the dog can go once you're there. Morvedra Nou, on the Macarella road outside Ciutadella, lets dogs join you for meals on a short lead, with breakfast and the restaurant both open to them. Its sister Amagatay, near Alaior, runs the same rules, so dogs eat with you under the olive trees. Both are adults only (16+). Santa Ponsa and Torre Vella, the two Fontenille fincas near Son Bou, take dogs in any bedroom and around eight hectares of gardens and vineyards, but not near the spa or the pools. On the coast, Villa Le Blanc Gran Meliá is the only five-star beachfront hotel that takes two dogs per room, and the Camí de Cavalls runs west from its door.

Fees start at EUR 10 a night at Hevresac in Maó, which takes small dogs only. Binissaida charges EUR 20 per dog a night for dogs up to 12 kg, the Catalonia Mirador des Port EUR 25 a night plus a EUR 200 refundable deposit, Cristine Bedfor EUR 30 per dog a night, and Morvedra Nou and Amagatay EUR 35 a night. Villa Le Blanc, Meliá Cala Galdana and Biniarroca don't publish a fee, so ask when you book. For a bigger dog, the Catalonia Mirador des Port in Maó is the pick, taking one dog up to 20 kg, which is the most generous published limit on the island.

The catch is the beaches. Most municipal beaches close to dogs through the bathing season, roughly 1 May to 31 October, set beach by beach by each town hall. It covers the sand, not the coast path, and a short list of named beaches keep dog hours or stay open all summer. Plan around those and the Camí de Cavalls and it's a very good island for a dog. Also note that the Fontenille fincas close from early November to spring.

What happens when you get there

Beaches
Most municipal beaches keep dogs off the sand from roughly 1 May to 31 October, with Macarella and Turqueta closing from 1 April. Outside those months dogs are generally allowed on a lead. Dates are set by each town hall, so check locally before you go.
Beaches that stay open
Binigaus near Es Migjorn Gran from 19:00 to 09:00 in season (it's also a naturist beach), and Cala Fustam all day. Els Alocs on the north coast all day. Es Grau and Sa Mesquida near Maó from 20:30 to 10:00. Cala Pudent near Son Parc year round, a 15-minute walk in with no facilities. Ses Fontanelles near Ciutadella.
Camí de Cavalls
The 185 km coast path round the whole island is the year-round answer, with dogs on a lead. Some stretches are closed to dogs for wildlife, notably inside the S'Albufera des Grau natural park.
Eating out
Terraces are the norm for dogs, in Maó and Ciutadella especially. Es Bruc at Santo Tomás welcomes dogs and is about 10 minutes' walk from Binigaus, and Pipet & Co in Maó is another. Don't count on eating inside with a dog.
Weight limits
Cristine Bedfor gives an 8 kg limit but also mentions medium-sized dogs, so confirm before booking. Binissaida takes dogs up to 12 kg, Hevresac and Biniarroca small dogs only, and the Catalonia Mirador des Port one dog up to 20 kg. The Annua, Fontenille and Meliá hotels don't publish a limit.
Getting there
Menorca Airport is about 5 km from Maó. UK carriers don't take dogs in the cabin, so the realistic routes with a small dog are via mainland Spain on a Spanish carrier, or by car and ferry from Barcelona or Valencia to Ciutadella or Maó. Check the ferry's pet terms when you book.
Heat and closures
July and August are hot and it's the height of the beach closures, so walk early and late. The Fontenille fincas close from early November to spring, and the Cala'n Bosch resort area shuts from late October to 1 May.

Vets Sant Lluís is at Av. Sa Pau 14 in Sant Lluís, +34 971 151 298. Vetmenorca is at Carrer Santa Victòria 30 in Maó, 685 753 292, with limited weekday hours. Ask your hotel for the nearest out-of-hours cover when you arrive.
Best walks
The Camí de Cavalls is the one to know, 185 km right round the coast, with the stretch from Santo Tomás west to Binigaus and Cala Fustam and the climb out of Cala Galdana to Cala Mitjana among the best. Inland, the finca lanes and olive groves around Alaior and the farmland on the Macarella road. In Maó, the Moll de Ponent harbour promenade for an evening walk. For sand in summer, Es Grau and Sa Mesquida early or late, Binigaus from 19:00, and Els Alocs and Cala Pudent on the north coast.
When to go
Late October into spring if you want the beaches, because most of them reopen to dogs outside the 1 May to 31 October season, but several of the best fincas close from early November, so late October is the sweet spot. May, June and September work well if you're happy on the coast path and the handful of beaches with dog hours. July and August are hot and at peak beach closures, so they're the hardest months with a dog.
