Where can my dog actually go?

South Tyrol is about as easy as dog country gets. Almost every four- and five-star hotel takes dogs and publishes the fee, a short lead and a poo bag are the main rules on the trails, and the Merano area has the Waalwege, flat, shaded paths along old irrigation channels that could have been built for a dog. Forty-three hotels on our list take dogs, from Merano's Obermais villas up to the Hafling plateau, across the Passeier and the Vinschgau, down to Bolzano and the wine road and east through the Pustertal to Sexten.

Nearly all of them keep dogs out of the spa and the main dining room, so what separates them is whether the dog gets a seat at dinner. Hotel Gasthof Jochele in Pfalzen is the most open, dogs at breakfast and dinner in the dining room as long as their nose stays below the table edge. Ansitz Rungghof in Girlan, Prinz Rudolf in Merano and Hidalgo Suites in Burgstall let dogs into the restaurant itself. Miramonti in Hafling sets a Tea Room table for any meal and cooks dog food to order, Andreus Resorts in the Passeier has a separate Stube for breakfast and dinner, and Hotel Laurin in Toblach, Das Paradies in Latsch and Hotel Christoph in Olang give you a lounge or reserved table. Starkenberg in Schenna, Alpenrose at St. Valentin and Haus am Hang at Kaltern keep a dog section of the restaurant. The clear noes at mealtimes are Villa Eden, Castel Rundegg, Hohenwart, Hubertus, Mirabell and the Bärenhotel, which keep dogs out of every dining room.

Fees run from EUR 14 a day for a small dog at the Golserhof and EUR 15 at Parkhotel zur Linde, Ansitz Rungghof and Hidalgo Suites, through EUR 20 to 25 at most four-stars, to EUR 35 to 40 at the five-stars. Andreus and Hotel Quelle add EUR 40 final cleaning on top. Weight limits are mostly not published, and a few hotels only take small dogs, Mignon and Parkhotel Marlena among them. The pick for a big dog is the Golserhof in Dorf Tirol, which publishes a fee ladder by weight up to 35 kg and has a garden with loungers above the hotel for you and the dog.

Two things catch people out. Dogs need a muzzle on buses, trains and every cable car, so pack one even for a gentle dog. What happens when you get there

Muzzles on transport
Small dogs in your arms or in a carrier up to 70 x 30 x 50 cm travel free and without a muzzle on buses, regional trains and cable cars. Medium and large dogs need a ticket, a lead and a muzzle, and can't take a seat. The Meran 2000 lifts only carry muzzled dogs, and some cable cars charge for them.
Trauttmansdorff
The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff don't admit animals of any size, even in a carrier or bag. The gardens pass on contacts for two independent dog-sitters. Several hotels also arrange sitters, including Miramonti, Villa Eden, the Golserhof and Quellenhof at EUR 20 an hour.
Dogs at meals
Most hotel dining rooms here are dog-free, so ask for the dog table by name when you book. Jochele, Rungghof, Prinz Rudolf and Hidalgo allow dogs in the restaurant. Miramonti, Andreus, Laurin in Toblach, Das Paradies, Christoph, Il Tyrol and Das Gerstl set a separate table in a Stube, lounge or bar. In summer Parkhotel zur Linde and Parkhotel Marlena seat you on the terrace.
Lead and rules
The lead can be no longer than 1.5 metres anywhere in the province, and you pick up everywhere, including on the mountain. Keep well clear of grazing cattle, and if cattle go for you, let the dog off the lead. Third-party liability insurance is compulsory for dogs in Italy.
Fees
EUR 15 at Hidalgo, Rungghof and zur Linde, EUR 17 at Prinz Rudolf, and EUR 14 to 25 by weight at the Golserhof. EUR 20 to 25 at most four-stars. EUR 35 at Hubertus, Mirabell, Petrus, Laurin in Toblach and VillaVerde, and EUR 40 at Mignon, Villa Eden, Das Gerstl and Monika. Miramonti, Haus am Hang, the Torgglerhof and Parkhotel Laurin in Bolzano don't publish the amount.
Weight and number
Few hotels here publish a weight limit. The Golserhof takes dogs up to 35 kg, Parkhotel Laurin in Bolzano up to 20 kg and two dogs a room. Mignon and Parkhotel Marlena take small dogs only and Das Paradies small to medium. Parkhotel zur Linde takes two dogs, Parkhotel Holzner one.
Lakes
Dogs can't swim in Lake Kaltern, and the Seegarten keeps them off its lido. That's Lake Kaltern only. At the Weihrerhof on the Ritten the dog has its own bathing spot in the Wolfsgruben lake, and Bolzano's Talvera river has small rocky beaches and fenced dog areas.
Getting there
Verona, Innsbruck and Munich are the practical airports, with Verona about two hours by car to Bolzano and a little more to Merano. Bolzano is on the Brenner railway from Munich and Innsbruck, with regional trains on to Merano, up the Vinschgau to Mals and along the Pustertal to Bruneck and Innichen. Entry needs a microchip and a rabies jab at least 21 days old, UK visitors travel on an animal health certificate, and puppies under 15 weeks can't enter.
Best walks
The Marlinger Waalweg is the long one, about 12 kilometres from Töll to near Lana through Forst, Marling and Tscherms. The Maiser Waalweg runs 8 kilometres, about two and a half hours, from the Torgglerhof at Saltaus to Schloss Planta in Obermais, and the Algunder, Schenner, Partschinser and Naturnser Waalwege and the Latschander Waalweg in the Vinschgau are all flat and shaded. In Merano itself there's the Passer promenade, the Gilfpromenade, the Tappeinerweg and the Sissi-Weg. Further out, the Passerdammweg follows the river from St. Leonhard, the Freud Promenade crosses the Ritten from Oberbozen towards Klobenstein, the Talvera promenade in Bolzano has fenced dog areas, and in the east there's the Toblacher See circuit, the Drau path from Innichen and the Fischleintal from Sexten.
When to go
Spring and autumn are best for Merano and the wine road and the Waalwege are at their most comfortable. Summer in the Adige valley around Bolzano gets hot, so walk early and head up to the Ritten, Hafling and the shaded channel paths. Many hotels in Merano and on the wine road close for part of the winter, while the Pustertal hotels stay open for the Kronplatz and the Three Peaks. Trauttmansdorff runs from 1 April to 8 November in 2026 and reopens on 26 March 2027, so book a sitter if it's on your list.

Is Merano dog friendly?+

Very. Almost every good hotel takes dogs, the Waalwege around Merano are flat, shaded and ideal for a dog, and there are dog toilets with free bags around the town. Bring a muzzle for buses and cable cars, and plan around Trauttmansdorff, which doesn't let animals in.

Which hotels in South Tyrol let dogs into the restaurant?+

Where should I stay in South Tyrol with a big dog?+

The Golserhof in Dorf Tirol publishes a fee by weight up to 35 kg, EUR 25 a day for a dog of 25 to 35 kg. Most other hotels don't publish a weight limit, so give your dog's size when you book. Avoid Mignon and Parkhotel Marlena, which take small dogs only, and note that Jochele's dining room access is for dogs under about 60 cm at the shoulder.

At some hotels. Andreus Resorts gives you a NO sign for the door and the Heinrichshof in Algund a dog-in-room sign, so staff won't walk in. Hidalgo Suites doesn't allow dogs to be left unattended anywhere. Most others don't say, so ask.

Can dogs swim in the lakes in South Tyrol?+

Not in Lake Kaltern. Elsewhere, yes in places. The Weihrerhof on the Ritten has a separate dog bathing spot on the Wolfsgruben lake, and the Talvera river in Bolzano has small rocky beaches.

Which hotels have the most space for a dog?+

Mignon in Merano has a fenced dog garden of about 1,500 square metres, though it only takes small dogs. Parkhotel zur Linde in Schlanders lets dogs almost everywhere, including its 1,000 square metre garden. The Viktoria in Hafling has a dog meadow below the pool, and Merangardenvilla gives you a private suite garden.
