Where can my dog actually go?

This is a road trip, and a good one for a dog: rock pillars and footpaths at Meteora, pine forest at Metsovo, a long lakefront at Ioannina and the stone villages and bridges of Zagori. The hotels are the hard part. Four hotels on our list take dogs across the whole area, and that small number is the finding. Most of the big-name four and five-star properties here either don't take pets or won't put their terms in writing.

With so few, the difference between them is size and how much each one tells you. Grand Forest Metsovo is the only one with full written terms: small dogs in designated pet-friendly rooms with bowls provided, and not in the spa, the bar or the restaurant. Epirus Palace outside Ioannina has its own dog park in the grounds and calls itself pet friendly, but publishes nothing on indoor access. Divani Meteora in Kalambaka and Meteora Hotel at Kastraki both take dogs and publish no access rules, so ask where your dog can join you before you pay.

The weight limits are tiny and they decide the trip. Divani Meteora takes pets up to 4 kg. Grand Forest Metsovo takes dogs up to 7 kg at EUR 35 per room per night. Divani's fee is listed at EUR 40 per pet per stay, though the figures quoted for it vary, so confirm it. Meteora Hotel at Kastraki takes dogs on request with no extra charge and Epirus Palace publishes no fee. Neither of those two publishes a weight limit, which makes them the only places to ask with a medium or large dog, and you'll want the answer in writing.

Three things to plan around. Pets aren't normally allowed inside the Meteora monasteries, so one of you waits outside. Grand Meteora Hotel in Kastraki does not accept pets. And none of the four hotels is in a Zagori village itself, so for now Zagori is a day out from Ioannina or Metsovo. Don't plan on the train either: a dog over 10 kg can't reach Kalambaka by rail at all.

Daisy's picks

Where Daisy would book

  1. 01
    Epirus Palace Congress & Spa

Its own dog park in the grounds, so the morning run needs no car, and it's the natural base for Ioannina's lakefront and day trips into Zagori. No fee, weight limit or indoor access is published, so confirm all three when you reserve.

    Unknown · max Unknown kg

  2. 02
    Grand Forest Metsovo

The clearest written terms in the area and pine forest from the door. Small dogs up to 7 kg stay in designated pet-friendly rooms with bowls provided, at EUR 35 per room per night. Dogs aren't in the spa, the bar or the restaurant.

    EUR 35 · max 7 kg

  3. 03
    Divani Meteora Hotel

The one hotel in Kalambaka with a written pet rule, and it's a strict one: pets up to 4 kg only, at EUR 40 per pet for the stay, so confirm the fee when you book. Kalambaka's old quarter is a short walk away, with the old paved path towards the Holy Trinity rock starting at the top of it.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Weight limits
Divani Meteora takes pets up to 4 kg and Grand Forest Metsovo takes dogs up to 7 kg. Those are the only two limits in print. Meteora Hotel at Kastraki and Epirus Palace publish none, so they're the two to ask with a bigger dog, and neither says in writing that large dogs are welcome.
Fees
No extra charge at Meteora Hotel at Kastraki, where dogs are accepted on request. EUR 35 per room per night at Grand Forest Metsovo. Divani Meteora is listed at EUR 40 per pet per stay, but the figures quoted for it vary, so confirm with the hotel. Epirus Palace doesn't publish a fee.
Meteora monasteries
Pets aren't normally allowed inside the monasteries. Whether a dog can wait in the courtyards or on the steps isn't published, so plan on one person staying outside with the dog while the other goes in. Entry is EUR 5 per person per monastery in cash, there's a dress code, and each monastery closes at least one weekday, with more closed days from 1 November to 31 March.
Trains
Hellenic Train carries pets up to 10 kg free in a carrier. Dogs over 10 kg are carried only on a few Athens to Thessaloniki and Athens to Lianokladi services, not towards Kalambaka. The Kalambaka line has been closed since September 2023 and runs as a replacement bus, where the carrier limit is 50 x 40 x 35 cm with at most three small pets per bus. Ioannina has no railway.
Getting there
Drive. Athens to Meteora is about 350 km and 4 to 5 hours. Ioannina is 410 km from Athens and 270 km from Thessaloniki by motorway, and 92 km from Igoumenitsa port for the ferries to Corfu and Italy. Ioannina airport is 4 km from the centre with Aegean flights from Athens, so check the airline's cabin rules for your dog directly.
Shepherd dogs in Zagori
Flocks graze on the Zagori trails and they're guarded by working shepherd dogs. The national park's advice to hikers is to keep away from herds and their dogs. Keep yours on a lead and give any flock a wide berth.
Vikos Gorge
The park publishes no rule on visitors' dogs in the gorge, neither a ban nor a lead requirement, so ask at the information centres in Aspraggeloi, Mikro Papigo or Metsovo before you set out. In the park's core zone, which includes the gorge, swimming, camping, fires and staying after sundown are forbidden. The crossing between Monodendri and Vikos or Papigo is about 12 km and six to seven hours at medium difficulty.
Winter and heat
Carry snow chains in the Pindos in winter, when bad weather can last. In Megalo Papigo you park at the village entrance and walk about five minutes in, which matters with a dog and luggage in snow. At Meteora in July and August the exposed trails are hot by midday, so walk early morning or at sunset.
Best walks
At Meteora, the old paved footpath towards the Holy Trinity rock starts at the top of Kalambaka's old quarter, and the lanes and paths out of Kastraki run between the pillars. Fourteen interconnected trails were mapped in 2021, but many paths are poorly marked and no rule on dogs is published for them, so keep to the clear ones or take a guide. In Zagori, Kipoi is the easy stop: the Kontodimos bridge at the village entrance, the Milos bridge by the old water mill, the Petsonis bridge towards Fragades and an 18th-century three-arched bridge just outside the village, most of them signposted and close to the road. Ioannina has lakeside walking along Lake Pamvotida. At Metsovo the pine forest starts at the door of Grand Forest, with the Aoos Springs lake roughly half an hour away by car.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn suit a dog best. July and August bring high heat by midday on the exposed Meteora trails, so keep walks to early morning and sunset. Winter at Meteora is quiet, moody and sometimes snowy, with shorter monastery hours and more closed days from 1 November to 31 March. In the Pindos, winter means snow chains, and the snow in the Zagori mountains starts melting by late February.

Dog-friendly hotels in Meteora and Zagori

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Meteora and Zagori

Is Meteora dog friendly?+

Outdoors, yes. Indoors, less so. Pets aren't normally allowed inside the monasteries, and only two hotels on our list at Meteora take dogs: Divani Meteora, up to 4 kg, and Meteora Hotel at Kastraki, on request. Grand Meteora Hotel does not accept pets. Plan on the footpaths and viewpoints with your dog and take the monasteries in turns.

Can dogs go inside the Meteora monasteries?+

Not normally. Recognised service animals may be treated differently, and the advice is to contact the monastery in advance. Whether a dog can wait in the courtyard isn't published, so plan for one person to stay outside.

Is Zagori dog friendly?+

The walking is, with stone bridges at Kipoi close to the road and long trails through the national park. The hotels aren't there yet. No hotel in a Zagori village is on our list, so the bases are Epirus Palace outside Ioannina and Grand Forest Metsovo. Keep your dog on a lead around flocks, which are guarded by working shepherd dogs.

How much do hotels in Meteora and Zagori charge for dogs?+

Nothing extra at Meteora Hotel at Kastraki, EUR 35 per room per night at Grand Forest Metsovo, and EUR 40 per pet per stay listed at Divani Meteora. Epirus Palace doesn't publish a fee. Divani's and Meteora Hotel's terms vary depending on where you read them, so confirm with the hotel before you pay.

Where should I stay near Meteora or Zagori with a big dog?+

Ask Meteora Hotel at Kastraki or Epirus Palace in Ioannina. Neither publishes a weight limit, and neither confirms large dogs in writing, so get a clear yes for your dog's size first. Divani Meteora stops at 4 kg and Grand Forest Metsovo at 7 kg.

Can I take my dog on the train to Meteora?+

Only a dog of 10 kg or less in a small carrier. The Kalambaka line has been closed since September 2023 and runs as a replacement bus with a 50 x 40 x 35 cm carrier limit, and dogs over 10 kg aren't carried on that route at all. Drive instead.

Can dogs walk the Vikos Gorge?+

No rule on dogs is published for the gorge, so ask at the park information centres in Aspraggeloi, Mikro Papigo or Metsovo before you go. The crossing is about 12 km and six to seven hours, and swimming and staying after sundown aren't allowed in the core zone. Keep your dog on a lead and well away from flocks.

Can dogs go on the boat to the island in Ioannina?+

It isn't published. There's a regular boat to the inhabited island on Lake Pamvotida, but no dog rule or fare for pets is stated, so ask at the quay. The lakefront itself has parks and long lakeside walks.
