What happens when you get there

Ferries with a dog

Declare your dog when you book, because you can't get a pet ticket on board. Blue Star Ferries and Seajets both issue a free pet ticket and ask for the pet passport or health book number, the microchip number and the size. Pets aren't allowed in ordinary cabins, bars, restaurants or indoor areas on Blue Star, and on the open deck they're on a lead, muzzled and with you. Bring a muzzle even if your dog never wears one.

Big dogs and fast boats

On Blue Star's Highspeed ships pets travel only in a carrier, up to 10 kg. On Seajets, pets up to 10 kg in a basket can stay in a private cabin if you book the whole cabin, and dogs can stay on an open deck if the vessel has one. The terms don't say what happens to a bigger dog on a catamaran without an open deck, so ring Seajets on +30 210 710 7710 first. Blue Star's conventional ships have pet cabins, two pets per cabin, and pet areas.

Getting there

No direct flights from the UK or Ireland. Milos has a small airport with domestic flights from Athens. Sifnos and Folegandros have no airport, so it's a ferry from Piraeus, or on from Milos once you're on the islands.

Beaches

Dogs are allowed on unorganised beaches and in the sea across Greece, which is most of the coastline here. Only two beaches in the area hold a Blue Flag in 2026, Kamares and Platys Gialos on Sifnos, and the rule covers only their certified sections. Milos and Folegandros have none. On an organised stretch with sunbeds, it's the operator's call.

Heat and shade

The real beach problem on Milos is heat, not rules. Sarakiniko is bare white volcanic rock with no shade, and several of the famous coves are reached down steps or ladders. Provatas, Paliochori and Firiplaka on the south coast, and the Pollonia seafront, are the easier days for a dog.

Kleftiko

The sea caves and rock arches at Kleftiko are reached mainly by boat, on day trips and sailing catamarans from Adamas and Pollonia. No operator publishes a dog policy, so it's the skipper's call. A private charter is the reliable way to take a dog, and ask about shade on board and how she gets back on after a swim.

Seasonal closures

Almost every hotel on these islands closes from late October to April. Check opening dates before planning a shoulder-season trip.

Churches and sights

Churches, including Panagia Thalassitra above Plaka, are working churches, so dogs wait outside. The Kastro above Plaka is an open-air climb and the natural sunset walk with a dog.

Best walks

On Milos, the stepped path from Plaka up to the Kastro at sunset, the lane down from Plaka to the fishing hamlet of Klima, the waterside loop round Pollonia bay, and the long sand at Provatas, Paliochori and Firiplaka on the sheltered south coast. On Sifnos, the waymarked footpaths linking the villages, including the walk from Apollonia through Exambela to the bay at Faros. On Folegandros, Karavostasis and Vardia beaches from the port.

When to go

Late May, June and September are the months for a dog. July and August are hot, shade is scarce on all of these islands, and the meltemi blows hard from the north in high summer, so walks belong to early morning and evening and the south coast of Milos is the sheltered side on windy days. Almost every hotel closes from late October to April.
