What happens when you get there

Staying in Nafplio

Nafplio's four- and five-star hotels say no to dogs, about 45 of them, so staying in the old town with a dog is the problem, not visiting it. Base yourself on the Epidaurus coast and drive in for the day.

Archaeological sites

Since 2023, Greek rules let dogs on a lead into open-air archaeological sites, with exceptions. Mycenae, the Epidaurus sanctuary and theatre, and Palamidi fall under that in principle, but museums on site aren't included and the ticket desk has the final say. Festival performances in the ancient theatre at Epidaurus are a separate question from a daytime visit. The Little Theatre at Palaia Epidavros and the sunken city at Gialasi are on the coast and easy with a dog.

Beaches

Dogs are allowed on unorganised beaches and in the sea. Sections with sunbeds are where to check locally. Blue Flags only touch a dog owner at seven named beaches in Monemvasia municipality, including Pori, Megali Ammos and Pachiammos at Plytra, and at Kondyli and Plaka near Nafplio. There are none anywhere in the Mani or at Gythio.

Heat

July and August afternoons regularly reach the mid 30s Celsius, and the Mani's stone and pebble throw it back. Walk before 10 and after 7. Palamidi, Mycenae and Olympia have very little shade, so go early.

Seasonal closures

Most coastal and Mani hotels open roughly April to October. Nafplio and Gythio have more places open year-round. Check opening dates before booking a shoulder-season trip.

Getting there

Athens is the main gateway, about two hours by road to Nafplio and around four to Monemvasia or the Mani. Kalamata is closer for Kardamyli and Stoupa, with seasonal international flights. Check your airline's in-cabin pet rules before you book.

Buses

The regional KTEL companies run the buses, and their dog rules aren't published clearly, so ask before you travel. In practice this is a region you drive.

Restaurants

Outdoor tables are the norm from Nafplio's old town to the Mani harbours, and a dog under the table is ordinary. Indoor dining rooms vary, so ask if the weather drives you in.

Best walks

In Nafplio, the Arvanitia promenade round the headland below Akronafplia and the harbour front, both flat and easy. Near Epidaurus, the Gialasi shore with the shallow sunken-city ruins to paddle over, and the Little Theatre about 2 kilometres from Epidavros Seascape. Kinsterna's own olive groves and orchards for mornings, and the causeway into Monemvasia's lower town for the evening. At Gythio, the causeway out to Marathonisi islet with its pines and lighthouse, and the long sand at Mavrovouni. In the Mani, the pebble beach at Neo Itilo and the walls of Kelefa castle above the bay, plus Ritsa and Foneas near Kardamyli.

When to go

May, June, September and early October. July and August afternoons hit the mid 30s, the Mani's stone holds the heat, and the big sites have little shade, so a summer trip means early starts and long lunches. Most coastal and Mani hotels close from roughly November to March, while Nafplio and Gythio keep more open year-round.
