Where can my dog actually go?

New Orleans is a walking city for a dog, and for a big dog it's only a walking city. The buses, streetcars and ferries take pets only in a carrier small enough to sit on your lap, so anything larger gets around on its own four feet. That makes the hotel's address the most important decision you'll make. Twelve hotels on our list take dogs: seven in the Central Business District and Warehouse District, three in or on the edge of the French Quarter, one on St. Charles Avenue in the Garden District and one in Central City.

Almost no hotel here publishes where a dog can go beyond the room, which is the first thing to know. Kimpton Hotel Fontenot is the exception. Dogs are welcome at its nightly hosted wine reception, they aren't in the dining areas, and a dog can stay in the room alone if it's crated and quiet. The Windsor Court puts a plush bed and bowls in the room and says all well-behaved pets are welcome, but its house rules stop at the door of the room. Virgin Hotels sets out pet amenities and has no breed or size restrictions. Bourbon Orleans takes two dogs per room. Everywhere else, ask about the courtyard, the bar and the rooftop pool before you book.

Fees are mostly flat. Nothing at Kimpton Fontenot, USD 75 at The Pontchartrain, USD 100 at Virgin, NOPSI and Bourbon Orleans, and USD 150 at The Windsor Court and The Eliza Jane. Dew Drop Inn charges USD 250 per pet, which it calls a deposit but doesn't refund. The nightly ones are The Westin at USD 50, Le Méridien at USD 50 capped at USD 150, and Drury Plaza at USD 50 per room. For a big dog the picks are Kimpton Fontenot, Virgin Hotels and Hotel Monteleone, none of which sets a weight limit. Le Méridien and The Westin take one dog up to 40 lbs (18.1 kg), and The Eliza Jane takes two up to 40 lbs each, dogs only.

Two honest gaps. We have nothing listed yet in the Marigny, Bywater or Mid-City, and the Garden District comes down to The Pontchartrain. Henry Howard Hotel in the Lower Garden District states no pets, The Higgins Hotel takes service animals only, and the New Orleans Marriott Warehouse Arts District doesn't allow pets.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Streetcars, buses and ferries
RTA lets pets ride only if they're carried in a small container that fits on your lap. That covers the whole network, the streetcars included, and it rules out any dog too big for a lap carrier. Service animals ride as normal. If you're counting on the Algiers ferry, confirm the rule with RTA first.
City Park
Dogs must be on a lead and with you at all times in the park. The exception is NOLA City Bark, a 4.6-acre permit-only dog park. A visitor can buy a two-week temporary permit for USD 25, and the dog must be at least six months old, spayed or neutered, heartworm-negative and current on rabies, DHLPP and Bordetella, with proof. It's open Wednesday to Monday from 5:30am to 9pm and Tuesday from 3 to 9pm, with no children under 8.
Audubon Park
Dogs must be securely leashed and with their owner at all times. The park is open daily from 5am to 10pm, as is Audubon Riverview Park. The park rules mention no off-lead area.
Jackson Square and the riverfront
We haven't been able to confirm the rule for dogs in Jackson Square, in the French Market or in Crescent Park, so we won't state one. Read the signs at each gate and check the official page before you plan a morning around any of them.
Dogs at the table
No hotel on this list publishes a yes for its restaurant or bar. Kimpton Fontenot is the only one with a written position, and it's that dogs aren't in the dining areas, though they are welcome at the evening wine reception. We haven't confirmed the city's rule on dogs in restaurant courtyards and patios, so ask each place.
Weight limits
No limit at Kimpton Fontenot, Virgin Hotels or Hotel Monteleone. Le Méridien and The Westin take one dog up to 40 lbs (18.1 kg). The Eliza Jane takes two dogs up to 40 lbs each. Drury Plaza takes two pets with a combined weight of 80 lbs (36.3 kg). The Windsor Court, NOPSI, Bourbon Orleans, The Pontchartrain and Dew Drop Inn publish no limit, so ask.
Fees
Free at Kimpton Fontenot. Per stay it's USD 75 at The Pontchartrain, USD 100 at Virgin, NOPSI and Bourbon Orleans, and USD 150 at The Windsor Court and The Eliza Jane, where extra fees may apply. USD 250 per pet at Dew Drop Inn. Nightly it's USD 50 at The Westin and Drury Plaza, and USD 50 at Le Méridien up to a USD 150 cap. For Hotel Monteleone we hold USD 25 a night plus a USD 100 cleaning charge and a USD 100 deposit, which the hotel doesn't publish itself, so confirm it when you book.
Flying in
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport has a pet relief area after security near Shake Shack. There's a second one outside on Level 1, between the short-term parking garage and the terminal: leave by door 5 and turn right.
Best walks
Lafayette Square is the patch of green for the Central Business District hotels, and it's where Kimpton Fontenot sends its guests for the daily walk. From the French Quarter hotels, Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park are the nearest green spaces, though check the signs at the gate before you go in. Audubon Park, uptown, is the big leashed walk and is open from 5am to 10pm. City Park is on-lead throughout, with NOLA City Bark as the off-lead option for anyone who buys the two-week permit. In the Garden District the walking is on quiet residential streets off St. Charles Avenue.
When to go
We haven't confirmed any official guidance on summer heat, hurricane season or Mardi Gras for dogs, so we won't pick months for you. What is fixed is the daily timetable. Audubon Park opens at 5am and NOLA City Bark at 5:30am on every day but Tuesday, which makes an early walk easy at any time of year. If crowds worry your dog, the Warehouse District and the Garden District are quieter bases than the French Quarter.

Dog-friendly hotels in New Orleans

Questions we get asked

Dogs in New Orleans

Is New Orleans dog friendly?+

For hotels, yes. Twelve on our list take dogs, one charges nothing, and three set no weight limit. The catch is transport: buses, streetcars and ferries only take pets in a lap-sized carrier, so pick a hotel you can walk from.

Can I take my dog on the streetcar in New Orleans?+

Only if the dog travels in a carrier that fits on your lap. That's the RTA rule for the whole network, buses and ferries included. A bigger dog walks, which is why the hotel's location matters so much here.

How much do New Orleans hotels charge for dogs?+

Nothing at Kimpton Hotel Fontenot. USD 75 at The Pontchartrain, USD 100 at Virgin Hotels, NOPSI and Bourbon Orleans, and USD 150 at The Windsor Court and The Eliza Jane, all one-off charges. The Westin and Drury Plaza charge USD 50 a night, and Le Méridien charges USD 50 a night up to USD 150.

Where should I stay in New Orleans with a big dog?+

Kimpton Hotel Fontenot has no size, weight or breed limit and no fee. Virgin Hotels has no breed or size restrictions for USD 100 a stay, and Hotel Monteleone sets no weight limit in the French Quarter. Avoid Le Méridien, The Westin and The Eliza Jane, which all cap at 40 lbs (18.1 kg).

Which French Quarter hotels take dogs?+

Hotel Monteleone on Royal Street takes dogs with no weight limit, Bourbon Orleans takes two dogs per room for a one-time USD 100, and The Westin on the river edge of the Quarter takes one dog up to 40 lbs (18.1 kg) at USD 50 a night. None of the three says where dogs can go beyond the room, so ask about the courtyard, bar and pool.

Is there an off-leash dog park in New Orleans?+

NOLA City Bark in City Park, 4.6 acres, by permit only. Visitors can buy a two-week temporary permit for USD 25, and you'll need proof of vaccinations and that your dog is spayed or neutered. The rest of City Park and all of Audubon Park are on-lead.

Can I leave my dog alone in a New Orleans hotel room?+

Kimpton Hotel Fontenot allows it if the dog is crated and quiet, with the Do Not Disturb hanger on the door. No other hotel on our list publishes a rule, so ask before you book a dinner the dog can't come to.

Are there dog-friendly hotels in the Marigny or Bywater?+

We have none listed there yet, and none in Mid-City either. Everything we list is in the Central Business District, the Warehouse District, the French Quarter, the Garden District or Central City.
