Where can my dog actually go?

Nuremberg is a walled old town split by the Pegnitz, and the river is what makes it work for a dog. The Pegnitz meadows run east out of the Altstadt through the Wöhrder Wiese to the Wöhrder See, and the green Burggraben moat and the Hallerwiese give you grass inside a few minutes of most hotels. The thing people expect and won't get is the castle garden: the Kaiserburg's own gardens don't allow animals. Six hotels made the list, five in Nuremberg and one in Bamberg.

No hotel in Nuremberg itself publishes where a dog can go outside the room, so the restaurant, bar and breakfast answer is unknown everywhere in town. What separates them is location and size. Karl August is the best-placed, on the Pegnitz two minutes from the Hauptmarkt, with a dog mat and bowls in the room. The Sheraton Carlton, the only five-star, takes two dogs up to 40 kg each. The Holiday Inn City Centre is inside the walls and takes two dogs with no weight limit. The clearest area rules belong to Hotel Villa Geyerswörth, which is in Bamberg, not Nuremberg: dogs are welcome in the hotel except the breakfast area and the wellness area, with a dog package of treats, a bowl and a blanket.

Fees run from EUR 12 a day at NOVINA Wöhrdersee and EUR 15 a night at the Holiday Inn, through EUR 20 a day for the Villa Geyerswörth dog package, to EUR 35 a night per dog at Karl August and EUR 35 per pet per night at the NH Collection. The Sheraton Carlton quotes both EUR 100 per stay and EUR 30 per pet per night, so confirm which applies. For a big dog, the Holiday Inn has no cap and the cheapest fee in the Altstadt, and the Sheraton takes up to 40 kg. The NH Collection stops at 25 kg, and NOVINA takes one dog that can't be left alone in the room.

Two warnings. Villa Geyerswörth is in Bamberg, a separate town further north on the main rail line, so book it as a Bamberg stay, not as a Nuremberg base. And two strong Nuremberg names say pets aren't allowed: the Novotel Nürnberg Centre Ville and Hotel Drei Raben.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Christkindlesmarkt
27 November to 24 December 2026 on the Hauptmarkt, daily 10:00 to 21:00, and 10:00 to 14:00 on Christmas Eve. The Prolog opening is at 17:30 on Friday 27 November, with stalls pausing from 17:25 to 18:00, and opening-day closing times differ between sources, so check on the day. The 2025 market drew more than two million visitors. No dog rule is published, so there's no ban, but it's a market for a small dog carried or in a bag, ideally on a weekday morning, and the opening evening and weekend evenings will be the worst crush.
The castle
The Kaiserburg castle gardens don't allow animals. That's the castle's own gardens only. The green moat and the city green spaces around the castle hill are separate. Castle interiors, museums and churches weren't covered here, so ask before you go.
U-Bahn, trams and buses
On the VGN network dogs generally need a child's fare. Small dogs in a suitable carrier ride free. Dogs ride free at any time with a TagesTicket Plus, and with a MobiCard from 9:00 Monday to Friday and all weekend. Dogs must be on a lead unless in a carrier, can't sit on seats, and dogs that could endanger other passengers must also be muzzled. The Deutschlandticket rule for dogs isn't covered on VGN's page.
Deutsche Bahn
Dogs up to house-cat size travel free in a carrier. Larger dogs need their own half-fare ticket, and dogs not in a carrier must be on a lead and wear a muzzle. The Hauptbahnhof sits at the Königstor, so the Sheraton Carlton, the NH Collection and the Holiday Inn are short walks from the platform.
Weight limits
The Sheraton Carlton takes dogs up to 40 kg and the NH Collection up to 25 kg. The Holiday Inn City Centre has no weight limit. Karl August, NOVINA and Villa Geyerswörth publish none, which means ask, not assume.
Fees
EUR 12 a day at NOVINA Wöhrdersee. EUR 15 a night at the Holiday Inn City Centre. EUR 20 a day at Villa Geyerswörth for the dog package. EUR 35 per dog per night at Karl August and EUR 35 per pet per night at the NH Collection. The Sheraton Carlton quotes EUR 100 per stay and EUR 30 per pet per night, so confirm.
Two dogs
The Sheraton Carlton, the Holiday Inn City Centre and the NH Collection take two. NOVINA Wöhrdersee takes one, and it can't be left alone in the room. Karl August and Villa Geyerswörth don't publish a number.
Bamberg
Hotel Villa Geyerswörth is in Bamberg, on the Regnitz, not in Nuremberg. It has the clearest dog terms on this page: dogs welcome except in the breakfast area and the fitness and wellness area, and a EUR 20 a day package with treats, a bowl and a blanket. Ask whether the package is compulsory and whether dogs can come into Brasserie La Villa.
Best walks
The Pegnitz riverside through the Altstadt between the Sebald and Lorenz sides, right outside Karl August. The Wöhrder Wiese meadows running east along the Pegnitz to the Wöhrder See, which is on the doorstep at NOVINA and about 15 minutes from the NH Collection. The green Burggraben moat below the castle hill and the moat gardens along the west walls by the Holiday Inn. The Hallerwiese on the Pegnitz. In Bamberg, the Regnitz banks outside Villa Geyerswörth, the Klein-Venedig waterfront and the Hain riverside park. Not the Kaiserburg gardens, which don't allow animals. Stadtpark lead rules aren't covered here, so keep the dog on a lead until you've checked.
When to go
The Pegnitz meadows and the Wöhrder See work all year. The Christkindlesmarkt, 27 November to 24 December 2026, is why most people come in winter, and it's the hardest time for a dog: more than two million visitors pack the Hauptmarkt, so plan weekday mornings for the market and keep the evenings for the river. Weekend evenings and the opening night are the ones to avoid.

Dog-friendly hotels in Nuremberg

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Nuremberg

Is Nuremberg dog friendly?+

For walking, yes. The Pegnitz runs through the old town out to the Wöhrder See meadows, and the moat gardens are close to most hotels. The castle gardens don't allow animals, and no Nuremberg hotel publishes whether dogs can come into its restaurant or bar.

How much do Nuremberg hotels charge for dogs?+

EUR 12 a day at NOVINA Wöhrdersee, EUR 15 a night at the Holiday Inn City Centre, and EUR 35 a night per dog at Karl August and the NH Collection. The Sheraton Carlton quotes both EUR 100 per stay and EUR 30 per pet per night, so confirm when you book.

Where should I stay in Nuremberg with a big dog?+

The Holiday Inn City Centre takes two dogs with no weight limit at EUR 15 a night, inside the walls. The Sheraton Carlton takes two dogs up to 40 kg each. The NH Collection stops at 25 kg.

Can I take my dog to the Nuremberg Christmas market?+

No dog rule is published for the Christkindlesmarkt, so there's no ban. It drew more than two million visitors in 2025, though, so it suits a small dog carried or in a bag, on a weekday morning. Avoid the opening evening on 27 November and weekend evenings.

Can dogs go in the Nuremberg castle gardens?+

No. The Kaiserburg's garden rules don't allow animals. The green Burggraben moat, the Hallerwiese and the Pegnitz meadows are the walks to use instead.

Can dogs go on the U-Bahn in Nuremberg?+

Yes. Dogs generally need a child's fare, small dogs in a carrier ride free, and dogs ride free with a TagesTicket Plus. They must be on a lead, can't sit on seats, and dogs that could endanger others must be muzzled. The airport is a short U-Bahn ride from the centre under the same rules.

Is Hotel Villa Geyerswörth in Nuremberg?+

No, it's in Bamberg, a separate town north of Nuremberg on the main rail line. It's the best dog welcome on this page, with a treats, bowl and blanket package for EUR 20 a day, but book it for a Bamberg stay rather than as a Nuremberg base.

Which Nuremberg hotel is closest to the station with a dog?+

The NH Collection is opposite the Hauptbahnhof and the Sheraton Carlton is just south of it. Both are a short walk from the platform, which helps if your dog is travelling on a lead and muzzle under the Deutsche Bahn rule.
