Where can my dog actually go?
Palm Springs is a bungalow town, and bungalows suit dogs. Of 20 hotels we researched through our booking partner, 15 take dogs, and most of them are low-rise places with walled gardens, private patios and a lawn or two. The standout is the Kimpton Rowan, which runs the full Kimpton policy: no fee, no weight limit, no breed rule, the dog can stay alone in the room, and it's welcome at the nightly wine reception. Nothing else in town comes close. The Thompson takes two dogs to 50 lb free. The Hyatt has its own small dog run and takes any size. The Hilton and Royal Sun take dogs to 75 lb, and Royal Sun is the only one that publishes dogs on its restaurant patio.
Read the fine print before you book, because it varies more here than in Las Vegas. Most hotels won't let the dog stay alone in the room, which matters in a town where you'll want dinner out. The exceptions are Kimpton Rowan, Hyatt, Ace, L'Horizon and La Serena. Half the boutiques are adults-only, which is a fact rather than a problem. Parker charges USD 200 per dog per night, the highest fee we've seen anywhere. L'Horizon asks you to walk the dog off the property to relieve itself. Several hotels keep the dog off their own lawns.
The other thing to know is that the famous trails are closed to dogs. The Indian Canyons and Tahquitz Canyon are tribal land with a flat no-animals rule, and the city bans dogs on the Museum, Lykken and Araby trails with fines up to USD 500. What you get instead is the fenced off-leash Palm Springs Dog Park on Mesquite, Ruth Hardy Park in Uptown, Demuth Park in the south, and the wide sidewalks and patios of Palm Canyon Drive. From June to September the pavement burns paws by mid-morning, so walk at dawn and after dark.

Where Daisy would book
- 01Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel
No fee, no weight limit, no breed rule, the dog can stay in the room while you're out, and it joins the nightly wine reception in the lobby. The best pet policy in the desert, in the only downtown high-rise with a rooftop pool.
Free
- 02Thompson Palm Springs, by Hyatt
Two dogs to 50 lb stay free on the Palm Canyon Drive strip, with beds and bowls in the room. Dogs stay out of the bars, restaurants and pools and can't be left alone, so it's a base rather than a hangout.
Free · max 23 kg
- 03Hyatt Palm Springs
The only hotel in town with its own dog run, any size welcome, and the dog can stay in the suite. USD 100 per dog covers a full week. Second-floor pet rooms right on the strip.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- No dogs on the trails
- The Indian Canyons (Palm, Andreas and Murray) and Tahquitz Canyon are Agua Caliente tribal land and allow no animals at all. The City of Palm Springs bans dogs year-round on the Museum Trail, North and South Lykken Trails and the Araby Trail. Service animals are the only exception.
- Where the dog can go
- Palm Springs Dog Park on Mesquite Avenue is fully fenced and off-leash. Ruth Hardy Park in Uptown and Demuth Park at the south end take leashed dogs. Palm Canyon Drive has wide sidewalks and plenty of patios, though each restaurant decides its own patio rule.
- Leaving the dog
- Kimpton Rowan, Hyatt, Ace, L'Horizon and La Serena allow a well-behaved dog alone in the room. Parker, Thompson, Avalon, ARRIVE, Colony Palms, Holiday House, Triada and Hilton don't. Plan dinner accordingly.
- Weight limits
- No limit at Kimpton Rowan, Parker or Hyatt. 75 lb at Hilton and Royal Sun. 50 lb at Thompson. 45 lb at Avalon. 40 lb at Colony Palms, Holiday House and Triada. 35 lb at L'Horizon. 30 lb at ARRIVE and La Serena. 25 lb at Ace and Fleur Noire.
- Adults-only
- ARRIVE, Colony Palms, Holiday House, Fleur Noire, L'Horizon and La Serena are adults-only. Fine for a couple with a dog, not for a family.
- The heat
- June to September most days top 100°F and pavement burns paws within minutes. Walk at dawn and after dark, test the ground with your hand, stay on grass and shade. October to May is the season.
- Best walks
- Ruth Hardy Park and the leafy Movie Colony streets, the Palm Canyon Drive strip at dusk, Demuth Park and the Tahquitz Creek channel path, and the Palm Springs Dog Park on Mesquite for an off-leash run.
- When to go
- October to May. Summer is for people who can stay by the pool, and the dog can't join them there anyway.
