Where can my dog actually go?

Pelion is a guesthouse mountain, not a resort coast. Stone villages sit at around 600 m above Volos, the east side is chestnut forest, and the old cobbled mule paths between villages are signed and walkable. For a dog that's a very good week. For finding a hotel it's harder. Seven four and five-star hotels on our list take dogs, and that small number is the finding. Only two of them, Domotel Xenia Volos and Santikos Mansion, publish a full written dog policy.

What separates them is how much they tell you about where the dog can be. Domotel Xenia Volos is the clearest: dogs aren't in the restaurant or the spa, and breakfast with a dog is in your room or at the outdoor Coffee Corner Cafe. Santikos Mansion in Vyzitsa lets dogs through public areas on a lead or in a carrier, keeps them out of restaurants, bars and pool areas, and doesn't allow a dog to be left alone in the room. Nostos Country House in Tsagarada puts dogs in the three rooms that open straight onto the grounds. Kenta Mountain Hotel in Portaria takes one dog in two Superior Double room types only. Hotel Pelion Resort, Aegli and Magnes all say pets are allowed and publish nothing on where they can go, so ask about breakfast, the restaurant and the pool before you commit.

Fees are low by Greek standards. Aegli charges EUR 5 per pet for the whole stay, though its terms aren't consistent everywhere they appear, so confirm with the hotel. Hotel Pelion Resort is EUR 15 for the whole stay, Santikos Mansion EUR 35 per stay and Nostos Country House EUR 50 per stay. Domotel Xenia is EUR 20 per pet per night, which adds up fastest. Kenta Mountain and Magnes don't publish a fee. The only weight limit in print is Domotel Xenia's 20 kg. No hotel here states that it takes large dogs, so with a big dog the honest answer is to ask Nostos, Santikos or Hotel Pelion Resort for a yes in writing, not to assume.

Two things to know before you plan a route. Valeni Boutique Hotel and Spa in Portaria does not accept pets, and most of the small family hotels in the east coast villages of Agios Ioannis, Chorefto and Damouchari don't either, so every hotel on this page is in Volos, Portaria, Vyzitsa or Tsagarada. And the east coast is a long way round the mountain. Damouchari is about 46 km from Volos, so pick your base for the side of Pelion you want to walk.

Daisy's picks

Where Daisy would book

  1. 01
    Santikos Mansion

The best welcome on the mountain: a treat on arrival, bowls and a dog bed, with a signed 5.8 km circular walk starting in the village. Dogs go through public areas on a lead or in a carrier, but not into restaurants, bars or pool areas, and can't be left alone in the room. EUR 35 per stay, one dog per room, no weight limit published.

EUR 35 · max Unknown kg

  2. 02
    Domotel Xenia Volos

The fullest written policy in the area. Two dogs per room up to 20 kg, a sleeping pillow, bowls and waste bags, and breakfast with your dog in the room or at the outdoor Coffee Corner Cafe. Dogs aren't in the restaurant or the spa, and it's EUR 20 per pet per night.

    EUR 20 · max 20 kg

  3. 03
    Nostos Country House

Dogs get the Nessus suite, the Thereas suite and the Elatus room, the three that open straight onto the grounds, so the first walk of the day needs no stairs or lobby. EUR 50 per stay. No weight limit is published, so confirm size, number of dogs and breakfast access when you request the room.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

How few hotels there are
Seven, across Volos, Portaria, Vyzitsa and Tsagarada. The four and five-star tier in Pelion is small and several of its best-known names don't take pets. Valeni Boutique Hotel and Spa in Portaria states it plainly in its terms. Book early, because the dog rooms at Nostos and Kenta Mountain are limited to named room types.
Where dogs can go in the hotel
Nowhere in Pelion publishes dogs in the restaurant. Domotel Xenia and Santikos Mansion both say no, with Xenia offering breakfast in the room or at the outdoor Coffee Corner Cafe. Whether a dog can join breakfast on the porch at Santikos isn't published, and Hotel Pelion Resort, Kenta Mountain, Aegli and Magnes publish no access rules at all. Ask by name before you pay.
Fees
EUR 5 per pet per stay at Aegli, EUR 15 per stay at Hotel Pelion Resort, EUR 35 per stay at Santikos Mansion and EUR 50 per stay at Nostos Country House. Domotel Xenia charges EUR 20 per pet per night. Kenta Mountain and Magnes don't publish a fee, and Aegli's terms vary depending on where you read them, so confirm all three directly.
Weight limits and two dogs
Domotel Xenia Volos takes dogs up to 20 kg and is the only hotel that says it takes two per room. Santikos Mansion and Kenta Mountain take one. The rest publish no size limit and no number, which isn't the same as any size welcome, so get it confirmed in writing.
Pelion steam train
Dogs can ride the little train from Ano Lechonia to Milies on a lead and wearing a muzzle, with only two dogs allowed per train. It's about 15 km in about 90 minutes with a stop at Gatzea, out at 10:00 and back from Milies at 15:00, on weekends and listed dates. Pet tickets are sold at ticket offices only and the dog fare for this line isn't clear, so ask at Ano Lechonia and go early.
Getting there
Volos is the gateway. Nea Anchialos airport is 24 km southwest of the city and its routes are seasonal, so outside summer you're driving. Athens to Pelion is about 360 km by road via Lamia, Larissa and Volos. The east coast villages are well beyond Volos, with Damouchari about 46 km on from the city.
Beaches
Dogs are allowed on unorganised sand and in the sea on a lead, organised beaches follow the operator's sign, and the no-dogs condition on Blue Flag beaches applies to the named certified sections only. Below Tsagarada, Fakistra is a pebble beach with no organised section and Mylopotamos has a beach bar and loungers.
Best walks
The old stone kalderimi are the reason to bring a dog here. Volunteers have reopened more than 150 km of them and signed over 70 routes, marked in red paint. The circular walk around Vyzitsa is 5.8 km and about 2 hours 40 minutes, finishing in the village square. Longer days are Milies to Neochori via the Panagiotiko dam at 12 km and 5 hours, the Agia Triada to Agios Georgios circuit at 8.5 km and 4 hours, Kato Gatzea up to Agios Georgios at 12.4 km and 5.5 hours, and the Pouri to Megalovrachos waterfalls loop at 8.3 km and 5 hours. For something gentler, Makrinitsa has cobbled paths and stone fountains, Tsagarada has the thousand-year-old plane tree in Agia Paraskevi square, and the Volos seafront is a flat harbour walk from the door of Aegli and Domotel Xenia.
When to go
Pelion works all year, which is rare for Greece. The mountain villages are a winter escape, with skiing on the higher slopes from Christmas to Easter, and the forest and the kalderimi are at their best in spring and autumn. Summer brings the seasonal flights into Nea Anchialos and the beaches below Tsagarada. Outside summer the local airport has no routes, so plan on driving, and Nostos Country House asks for a two-night minimum in high season.

Dogs in Pelion

Is Pelion dog friendly?+

For walking, very. There are over 70 signed routes on old stone paths, forest on the east side and a flat seafront in Volos. For hotels it's thin. Seven four and five-star hotels on our list take dogs, none publishes dogs in the restaurant, and only Domotel Xenia Volos and Santikos Mansion set their rules out in full.

How much do Pelion hotels charge for dogs?+

Where should I stay in Pelion with a big dog?+

There's no easy answer. Domotel Xenia Volos caps at 20 kg and no other hotel publishes a limit either way. Nostos Country House, with rooms that open onto the grounds, and Santikos Mansion are the ones to ask first. Get the hotel's yes for your dog's weight in writing before you pay.

Can dogs go to breakfast at hotels in Pelion?+

At Domotel Xenia Volos, yes in a limited way. Dogs aren't in the restaurant, but breakfast with a dog is served in the room or at the outdoor Coffee Corner Cafe. Santikos Mansion keeps dogs out of restaurants and bars. The other five publish nothing on breakfast, so ask.

Can I leave my dog alone in the hotel room in Pelion?+

Not at Santikos Mansion, where a dog can't be left unattended in the room or in a car. Domotel Xenia says a pet must not be left alone in the room for 24 hours and doesn't spell out shorter absences, so check. The other hotels don't publish a rule.

Can dogs go on the Pelion steam train?+

Yes, on a lead and wearing a muzzle, with a limit of two dogs per train. The train runs from Ano Lechonia to Milies on weekends and listed dates, leaving at 10:00 and returning at 15:00. Pet tickets are sold at the ticket office only, so turn up early.

Vyzitsa for Santikos Mansion and a signed circular walk from the square, with Milies and the steam train in the next village. Tsagarada for forest on the east side and Nostos Country House. Portaria for Kenta Mountain and Hotel Pelion Resort at 600 m with Makrinitsa next door. Volos for a flat seafront and the clearest written policy at Domotel Xenia.

Are there dog-friendly hotels on the Pelion east coast beaches?+

Not on our list. The hotels in Agios Ioannis, Chorefto and Damouchari are mostly small family places and most don't take pets. The nearest hotel on this page is Nostos Country House in Tsagarada, with the pebble beaches of Mylopotamos and Fakistra down the hill by car.
