Where can my dog actually go?

Philadelphia is an easy city to bring a dog to on paper. Eighteen hotels on our list take dogs, ten of them around Rittenhouse Square and the Center City core, and nearly all of them charge one flat fee for the stay instead of a nightly rate. Two charge nothing at all for a dog of any size. Big dogs have real choices here, which is not something you can say about most American city centres.

The thing that separates these hotels is not the fee, it's how much they tell you about where the dog can be. Almost nobody publishes a restaurant or bar rule. Kimpton Hotel Palomar is the exception on the yes side, with a Pupadelphia dog menu served on the seasonal patio at Square 1682 and through in-room dining all year. The Windsor Suites is the exception on the no side, and says plainly that pets aren't in its restaurants. Loews has a pet room service menu, a welcome letter from the general manager and its own dog-walking route maps. The Rittenhouse Hotel and the Four Seasons both have a dog menu and a concierge who will book a sitter or a walker, and both need that concierge because neither lets you leave the dog alone in the room.

Fees run from nothing at Kimpton Palomar and Kimpton Monaco, and nothing at the Four Seasons for one dog up to 25 lbs (about 11 kg), through USD 75 at Loews, Canopy by Hilton and The Study, USD 100 at The Bellevue, The Westin and Element, USD 150 at The Rittenhouse and USD 250 at W Philadelphia. Chestnut Hill Hotel is the only one that charges by the night, at USD 50 plus tax per dog. For a big dog, both Kimptons and Chestnut Hill Hotel take any size, and The Bellevue and Canopy go up to 75 lbs (about 34 kg). The Westin, W and Hyatt Centric stop at 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg).

A few things to know before you book. The Franklin on Rittenhouse welcomes dogs but publishes no fee or size limit, and the terms at AKA Rittenhouse Square, AKA University City and Sofitel are worth confirming with the hotel when you book. Chestnut Hill Hotel is out beside Wissahickon Valley Park, not in Center City, so it suits a trail trip more than a sightseeing one. We have nothing listed in Fishtown or Northern Liberties. And three hotels you may come across don't take pets at all: The Dwight D, The Inn at Penn and Motto by Hilton Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square.

Where Daisy would book

  1. 01
    Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia

The one hotel in the city with a published place for your dog to eat with you: the Pupadelphia menu on the seasonal patio at Square 1682, and by in-room dining the rest of the year. A bed and bowls come to the room. No fee, and no weight, breed or number limit. There's no relief area on site, so walks start at the front door.

On Rittenhouse Square itself, with dogs walking through the public areas on a lead, the BONE Appétit! pet menu and sitters and walkers through the concierge. Before you go

What happens when you get there

Fees
Free at Kimpton Palomar and Kimpton Monaco, and free at the Four Seasons for one dog up to 25 lbs (about 11 kg). USD 75 at Loews per room per stay, at Canopy by Hilton, and per pet at The Study. USD 100 at The Bellevue, The Westin and Element, USD 150 at The Rittenhouse, USD 250 at W Philadelphia. Chestnut Hill Hotel charges USD 50 plus tax per dog, per night, which adds up fast on a long stay.
Terms to confirm
The Franklin on Rittenhouse, The Windsor Suites and Hyatt Centric Rittenhouse Square don't publish a pet fee, so get it in writing when you book. Expect about USD 100 per pet at AKA Rittenhouse Square, USD 200 per room at AKA University City and USD 75 per room plus a USD 300 deposit at Sofitel, and confirm each with the hotel. At The Bellevue, ask whether the USD 100 covers both dogs. At Element, check the total.
Weight limits
Any size at Kimpton Palomar, Kimpton Monaco and Chestnut Hill Hotel. Up to 75 lbs (about 34 kg) at The Bellevue and Canopy by Hilton, 60 lbs (about 27 kg) at Element, and 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg) at The Westin, W Philadelphia and Hyatt Centric. The Four Seasons stops at 25 lbs (about 11 kg). Loews and The Rittenhouse give no weight limit.
Two dogs
The Bellevue takes two dogs up to 75 lbs each. Element, Loews and Hyatt Centric take two, with Hyatt Centric capping the pair at 75 lbs (about 34 kg) combined. Both Kimptons set no limit on numbers. The Four Seasons and W Philadelphia take one, and The Rittenhouse allows one pet per person.
Leaving your dog in the room
Never at The Rittenhouse, where the dog is out with you or crated with you present during housekeeping. Not at the Four Seasons either, where the Canine Concierge arranges a sitter. The Windsor Suites allows short absences but not long ones. No other hotel on the list publishes a rule, so ask before you book a dinner or a show.
Restaurants and patios
Two hotels publish a rule. Kimpton Palomar serves its dog menu on the seasonal patio at Square 1682, and The Windsor Suites keeps pets out of its restaurants. Everywhere else it isn't published, and we haven't confirmed the city's rule on dogs at restaurant patios, so ring the restaurant first.
Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell
Pets aren't allowed inside the public buildings of Independence National Historical Park, which covers Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center. Outdoors, dogs must be on a lead no longer than 6 feet and under control at all times, and you pick up after them. Kimpton Monaco is the hotel beside Independence Mall.
Trains and transit
Amtrak takes pets in a carrier only, with a 20 lb limit for pet and carrier combined, a maximum carrier size of 19 x 14 x 10.5 inches, one pet per customer and trips up to 7 hours on most routes. That's Coach and Acela Business Class, and the fee shows at booking. It rules out most dogs. We haven't confirmed SEPTA's pet rule, so check with SEPTA before you rely on the subway, a bus or a trolley.
Best walks
Rittenhouse Square is where Kimpton Palomar and The Windsor Suites both send their guests with dogs. Its dog rules aren't posted anywhere we could confirm, so keep the lead on and read the signs. Schuylkill River Park, to the west, has two separate dog runs, one for all dogs and one for older, disabled and small dogs under 25 lbs, surfaced in K-9 Grass with water fountains, benches and seasonal dog pools. Schuylkill Banks has 4.5 miles of finished river trail, though it publishes no dog or lead rule. Seger Dog Park at 1001 Rodman Street is run by a dog owners' association that asks for memberships, takes no puppies under 4 months and no dogs that aren't fully vaccinated, so check whether visitors can use it before you walk over. The Windsor Suites' own list adds Cret Park at 110 N 16th Street, Sister Cities Park at 210 N 18th Street, Dilworth Park at 1 S 15th Street and Penn's Landing Dog Park at 1 N Delaware Ave. For a proper day out, Wissahickon Valley Park is 2,000 acres of wooded creek trails beside Chestnut Hill, with dogs on a lead of no more than 6 feet at all times.
When to go
The warm months get you the most, because the Square 1682 patio at Kimpton Palomar and the dog pools at Schuylkill River Park are both seasonal. Neither publishes dates, so ask before you plan around them. We haven't confirmed heat figures for the city, so check the forecast before a summer trip and plan the long walk for early or late. In winter, note the Wissahickon curfew: the park closes from 8 pm to 6 am between 1 December and 31 March, against 1 am to 6 am the rest of the year, so evening trail walks are out.

Dog-friendly hotels in Philadelphia

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Philadelphia

Is Philadelphia dog friendly?+

For hotels, yes. Eighteen on our list take dogs, most for one flat fee per stay, and both Kimptons take any size for free. The gap is information: only two hotels publish a rule on dogs in the restaurant, and only three say whether a dog can be left in the room. Ask those two questions by name when you book.

How much do Philadelphia hotels charge for dogs?+

Nothing at Kimpton Palomar and Kimpton Monaco, and nothing at the Four Seasons for one dog up to 25 lbs (about 11 kg). USD 75 at Loews, Canopy by Hilton and The Study, USD 100 at The Bellevue, The Westin and Element, USD 150 at The Rittenhouse and USD 250 at W Philadelphia. Those are per-stay charges. Chestnut Hill Hotel is the one nightly fee, at USD 50 plus tax per dog.

Where should I stay in Philadelphia with a big dog?+

Kimpton Palomar near Rittenhouse Square or Kimpton Monaco in Old City, both with no weight limit and no fee. The Bellevue takes two dogs up to 75 lbs (about 34 kg) each for a one-time USD 100, and Canopy by Hilton takes dogs up to 75 lbs for USD 75. Chestnut Hill Hotel takes all sizes if you want the Wissahickon trails. Skip the Four Seasons, which stops at 25 lbs (about 11 kg).

Which Philadelphia hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+

Kimpton Palomar is the only one that publishes a yes, with its Pupadelphia dog menu on the seasonal patio at Square 1682. The Windsor Suites publishes a no for its restaurants. No other hotel on the list says either way, so ask the hotel about the restaurant and the bar before you arrive.

Can I leave my dog alone in a Philadelphia hotel room?+

Not at The Rittenhouse, where it's never allowed, and not at the Four Seasons. Both arrange sitters and walkers through the concierge, at an extra charge at The Rittenhouse. The Windsor Suites allows short absences only. The other hotels don't publish a rule, so confirm it before you book anything your dog can't come to.

Which Philadelphia hotels take two dogs?+

The Bellevue, Element, Loews and Hyatt Centric Rittenhouse Square all take two. Hyatt Centric limits each to 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg) and the pair to 75 lbs (about 34 kg) combined. Kimpton Palomar and Kimpton Monaco set no limit on the number of pets. The Four Seasons and W Philadelphia take one.

Can I take my dog on Amtrak to Philadelphia?+

Only a small one. Amtrak takes pets in a carrier with a 20 lb limit for the pet and carrier together, a maximum carrier size of 19 x 14 x 10.5 inches and one pet per customer, on trips up to 7 hours on most routes. It's Coach and Acela Business Class only, and the fee varies by route and shows at booking.

Can dogs go to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell?+

Not inside. Pets aren't allowed in the public buildings of Independence National Historical Park, which covers Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center. Outdoors in the park, dogs must be on a lead no longer than 6 feet. If you want to see inside, take turns or book a sitter through your hotel.

Where can my dog run off the lead in Philadelphia?+

Schuylkill River Park has two dog runs, one for all dogs and one for older, disabled and small dogs under 25 lbs, with water fountains and seasonal dog pools. Seger Dog Park at 1001 Rodman Street is run by a membership association, so check whether visitors can use it. In Wissahickon Valley Park dogs stay on a lead of no more than 6 feet at all times.

Which Philadelphia hotels don't allow dogs?+

The Dwight D doesn't allow pets, and neither do The Inn at Penn or Motto by Hilton Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square. Motto is the one to watch, because the name puts it right where most of the dog-friendly hotels are. Kimpton Palomar, Hyatt Centric, Sofitel and AKA Rittenhouse Square are all in the same part of town and do take dogs.
