Where can my dog actually go?

The Salzkammergut is easy country for a dog outdoors. Every lake has somewhere a dog can swim, and the Wolfgangsee boats, the Schafbergbahn, the Hallstatt ferry and most of the cable cars take dogs as long as they wear a muzzle and a lead. Indoors it's patchier. Most of the nineteen hotels on our list take dogs in the room for EUR 10 to 35 a day but keep them out of the main restaurant and the spa, which is the usual Austrian pattern.

So the few that go further are the ones to book. At Seehotel Brandauer's Villen in Strobl your dog comes to dinner in the restaurant, and only the sunbathing lawn and the spa are off limits, which makes it the best dining access on the Wolfgangsee. Hotel am See Seeresidenz in Altaussee says dogs can come everywhere with you, and charges nothing. SEIN Boutique Suites in Gosau does the same, with an orthopaedic dog bed and a dog shower. Landhotel Prielbauer above Mondsee lets dogs into the bar and onto the terrace with the Schafberg view but not the restaurant. Stadthotel Goldenes Schiff in Bad Ischl keeps a breakfast lounge, the Traunerl, for guests with dogs, while Hotel Bachmanngut in St. Wolfgang and the Heritage.Hotel Hallstatt keep dogs out of the dining room altogether.

Fees start at nothing at Hotel am See and EUR 10 a day at Hotel Bürglstein, then EUR 15 at Goldener Ochs, EUR 18 at Kirchenwirt and Schlosshotel Mondsee, EUR 20 at Prielbauer, EUR 21 at the Heritage.Hotel and EUR 22 at Hois'n Wirt, up to EUR 28 at Bachmanngut and EUR 35 at Romantik Hotel Seevilla. Brandauer's, SEIN and Goldenes Schiff don't publish theirs. Almost nobody publishes a weight limit, but Goldenes Schiff takes small dogs up to about 10 kg only and no long-haired dogs. For a big dog, Narzissendorf Zloam at Grundlsee is the pick: a staffed holiday village with its own inn where dogs are welcome, a 1,400 square metre fenced dog meadow and room for two dogs per house.

Two warnings. Hallstatt is thin. The Heritage.Hotel is the only hotel there on our list, dogs can't ride its shuttle from the car park or eat in its Seeauer restaurant, and the village is packed in high season. What happens when you get there

Pack a muzzle
The Wolfgangsee boats and the Schafbergbahn want a muzzle and lead or a carrier, and every dog outside a carrier needs a ticket. The Hallstatt ferry, the Katrin cable car in Bad Ischl, the Grünberg cable car in Gmunden (EUR 8 return per dog in summer 2026) and the Dachstein Krippenstein at Obertraun all want muzzle and lead too. The Katrin is free for dogs. We couldn't find a published dog rule for the Traunsee and Mondsee boats, so ask at the pier.
Salt mines
Dogs can ride the Salzbergbahn funicular in Hallstatt with a muzzle and come up to the Skywalk, but they can't go into the mine. There are free outdoor dog boxes at the Knappenhaus for the length of the tour. Altaussee's salt mine is the same, with two shaded dog boxes at the entrance.
Lake swimming
Dogs are generally kept off the organised lidos and many hotel beaches, but that's a handful of named spots per lake, not a ban. On the Wolfgangsee, try the dog bathing area in the Berau bay, Waldbad Fürberg near St. Gilgen (on a lead), the beach at Seecamping Appesbach and the Franzosenschanze. On the Hallstätter See there's a public dog spot on the south-west shore at Obertraun, next to a fast road. Swimming with dogs is banned on the whole Ödensee to protect a crayfish, though walking round it is fine.
Dogs at breakfast
Worth asking by name. Hotel am See and SEIN say dogs can go everywhere. Goldenes Schiff has dogs at breakfast in the Traunerl lounge from 7am to 11am. Bachmanngut and Prielbauer keep dogs out of breakfast.
Leads
The Ausseerland has a lead and pick-up rule across the whole area, and Gosau wants dogs on a lead in the village and off farm meadows. Keep well clear of suckler cows on the Alm.
Getting there
Salzburg Airport is about 30 minutes from St. Gilgen and Fuschl and around an hour and a half from Hallstatt by road. Linz and Munich are the alternatives. Check current flights from the UK and Ireland and your airline's pet rules. Trains and Postbus serve Bad Ischl, Hallstatt station across the lake, Bad Aussee and Gmunden, so check the ÖBB dog rules before you travel and keep the muzzle handy.
Vets
Tierklinik Wels runs a 24-hour emergency line on +43 699 17 17 18 08 and asks you to ring first. It's north of Gmunden, so it's the nearest confirmed 24-hour option for the Traunsee side. Near Altmünster, Dipl.-Tierarzt Robert Derflinger at Reindlmühl 10 sees dogs by appointment (+43 699 11455767). We couldn't confirm a 24-hour vet for the Wolfgangsee or the Ausseerland.
Best walks
The Wolfgangsee shore at Strobl down to the Berau bay dog bathing area, and the ride up the Schafberg on the Schafbergbahn from St. Wolfgang. The Gosaubach path from SEIN's car park gate in Gosau. The Altausseer See and the Grundlsee in the Ausseerland, and the loop round the Ödensee, where dogs can walk but not swim. The Katrin above Bad Ischl and the Grünberg above Gmunden by cable car. In Hallstatt, walk early or away from the centre at peak times.
When to go
Spring and September to October are the easiest months with a dog. Summer crowds in Hallstatt and St. Wolfgang are heavy, and Hotel Seewinkel takes dogs only in May, June, September and October. Many lake hotels close in winter or run seasonally, so check dates before you plan an off-season trip. We found no dated seasonal ban on dogs at the lakes, so treat the organised lidos as dog-free all year and use the named dog spots.

Narzissendorf Zloam at Grundlsee, with houses that take up to two dogs, a fenced dog meadow and a dog shower. Hardly any hotel here publishes a weight limit, so ask. Avoid Stadthotel Goldenes Schiff, which takes dogs up to about 10 kg only.

Can I take my dog to Hallstatt?+

Yes. The Heritage.Hotel by the ferry pier takes dogs for EUR 21 a night, though not in its restaurant or on its shuttle from the car park. Dogs can ride the Salzbergbahn with a muzzle and go up to the Skywalk, but not into the salt mine, where there are free dog boxes. The village is very crowded in high season, so walk early.

Can dogs go on the Wolfgangsee boats and the Schafbergbahn?+

Yes, with a muzzle and lead or in a suitable carrier. Every dog outside a carrier needs its own ticket, whatever its size.
