Where can my dog actually go?

Santa Fe takes dogs readily. Thirteen hotels on our list do, and the Dale Ball Trails put 24.4 miles of on-lead foothill path within reach of town. The friction is quieter than a ban. Most hotels here won't let a dog stay in the room alone, so dinner and any dog-free sight need a plan, and Bandelier National Monument lets a dog into three places only, none of them the cliff dwellings.

The thirteen are spread out. Six are in and around Santa Fe: La Fonda on the Plaza, Drury Plaza, The Inn of The Five Graces, Inn on the Alameda and Inn of the Turquoise Bear in town, and the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado in the foothills to the north. Four are in Taos and three are in Albuquerque, which works as a first or last night before the drive north. Nothing is listed yet on Canyon Road, in the Railyard or at Taos Ski Valley. What separates them is where the dog can be. The Four Seasons allows dogs on the outdoor seating at Terra and has its own Camino Encantado trail on the grounds. Inn of the Turquoise Bear gives dogs an acre of garden, on or off the lead. Adobe & Pines Inn near Taos takes dogs in every room and lends crates. The downtown Santa Fe hotels publish nothing about their restaurants, bars or pools, so ask before you book.

Fees run from nothing at the Four Seasons to USD 100 per dog, per night at Five Graces. In between: USD 30 a day at Turquoise Bear, USD 35 per stay for up to two dogs at Inn on La Loma Plaza when booked direct, USD 50 per dog per stay at Adobe & Pines, USD 75 per stay for the first dog at Palacio de Marquesa and Hotel Chaco, USD 50 a night at La Fonda and USD 60 a day at Drury Plaza. Watch the weight caps. ARRIVE Albuquerque takes one dog of 30 lbs (about 13.6 kg) or under, La Fonda stops at 45 lbs (about 20.4 kg), and Palacio de Marquesa and Hotel Chaco at 60 lbs (about 27.2 kg). Hotel Willa in Taos has no size restriction and takes two, which makes it the pick for a big dog. Downtown Santa Fe's answer is Drury Plaza, at 80 lbs (about 36.3 kg) combined across two pets.

Two well-known names are a no. Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm in Albuquerque keeps a strict no-pet policy because it is a working farm and wildlife habitat, with service dogs the only animals allowed. Inn of the Governors in Santa Fe accepts service animals only.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Bandelier
Pets are allowed in three places only: Juniper Family Campground, the main parking lot and the Cottonwood Picnic Area, on a lead of no more than six feet. They aren't allowed on most trails or in facilities, or on the summer shuttle bus from White Rock. A dog can't see the cliff dwellings, so plan Bandelier as a dog-free day or skip it.
Dale Ball Trails
The dependable walk in Santa Fe: 24.4 miles of natural-surface trail in the foothills, dogs allowed on a lead. Trailheads are Sierra del Norte off Hyde Park Road, Cerro Gordo at Upper Canyon Road and Cerro Gordo Road, and St. John's, Dorothy Stewart and Wilderness Gate on Camino Cruz Blanca.
Taos Pueblo
The Pueblo doesn't publish a rule on pets either way, so phone its Tourism Department on 575-758-1028 before taking a dog. It is generally open 9 am to 4 pm daily except when ceremonies require closing, and it closes for eight weeks each year in late winter and early spring. Tribal lands beyond the traditional pueblo area are off limits to visitors.
Dogs left in the room
Mostly a no. The Four Seasons, Hotel Willa, Palacio de Marquesa and Hotel Chaco all say a dog can't be left alone. Five Graces allows it if the dog is crated, and Adobe & Pines accepts a calm dog left in the room and lends crates. The other hotels don't publish a rule, so ask.
Weight limits
One dog of 30 lbs (about 13.6 kg) or under at ARRIVE Albuquerque. 45 lbs (about 20.4 kg) at La Fonda, 60 lbs (about 27.2 kg) at Palacio de Marquesa and Hotel Chaco, 80 lbs (about 36.3 kg) combined at Drury Plaza. Five Graces says medium in size or smaller without giving a figure. Hotel Willa has no size restriction.
Fees
Free at the Four Seasons. USD 30 a day at Turquoise Bear, USD 35 per stay at Inn on La Loma Plaza booked direct or USD 50 through a third-party site, USD 50 per stay at ARRIVE, USD 50 per dog per stay at Adobe & Pines. USD 75 per stay at Palacio de Marquesa, Hotel Chaco and Hotel Parq Central. USD 50 a night at La Fonda, USD 60 a day at Drury Plaza, USD 100 per dog per stay at Hotel Willa and USD 100 per dog, per night at Five Graces. Confirm the terms with La Fonda, Hotel Chaco and Inn on the Alameda when you book, as Inn on the Alameda's USD 35 per animal is a deposit and the other two are not fully spelled out.
Two dogs or more
Inn on the Alameda takes up to three animals in a pet-friendly room, booked by phone on (800) 289-2122. Inn on La Loma Plaza covers two dogs with one fee. A second dog is USD 35 at Palacio de Marquesa and Hotel Chaco, USD 10 a day more at Drury Plaza and USD 25 more per stay at Parq Central. The Four Seasons and ARRIVE take one.
Forests, the gorge and the train
We couldn't confirm lead rules for Santa Fe National Forest, Carson National Forest or the Rio Grande Gorge, or the pet rule on the Rail Runner Express. Ring the forest supervisor's offices before a hike, Santa Fe on 505-438-5300 and Carson on 575-758-6200, and check the Rail Runner's official page before relying on the train.
Best walks
The Dale Ball Trails in the Santa Fe foothills, 24.4 miles of on-lead path from trailheads at Sierra del Norte, Cerro Gordo, St. John's, Dorothy Stewart and Wilderness Gate. The Camino Encantado trail on the Four Seasons grounds if you're staying there, and the acre of gardens at Inn of the Turquoise Bear for off-lead time. From La Fonda, Drury Plaza, Five Graces and Inn on the Alameda, the Plaza and the old streets around it are the daily walk. Bandelier is not a dog walk: three permitted spots, none of them a trail.
When to go
Two dates shape a trip with a dog. Taos Pueblo closes for eight weeks each year in late winter and early spring and can close for ceremonies at other times, so phone before you drive up. Bandelier's summer shuttle from White Rock doesn't take pets. The Four Seasons allows dogs at Terra on the outdoor seating only, so ask the resort what that means in the months you're travelling.
