Where can my dog actually go?

Sardinia is an island of extremes for dogs. Twenty-nine hotels made our catalogue, and the best of them are as good as anywhere in Europe. CPH Pevero near Porto Cervo puts a bed and bowl in every room and lets dogs into the bar and lobby. 7Pines at Baja Sardinia lays out a bed, bowls, a toy and treats and has 56,000 square metres of garden. W Sardinia and Mangia's Santa Teresa give welcome kits. Hotel Calabona in Alghero will cook dog meals. Nuraghe Arvu at Cala Gonone has a dog beach 800 metres away.

Then there's the other Sardinia. Cala di Volpe takes dogs under 3 kg, confines them to the room and charges EUR 150, so we left it out. Forte Village, Capo d'Orso, Conrad Chia and most of the big southern resorts refuse outright. Read the weight limit before you fall for the photos, most Costa Smeralda five-stars cap at 10 kg.

The beach rule saves the trip. Under the regional ordinance dogs may use any Sardinian beach between 8pm and 8am, all summer. By day, look for the designated dog beaches: Lu Postu at Baja Sardinia, La Sciumara at Cannigione, Le Saline near Olbia, Poetto in Cagliari, Maria Pia in Alghero.

What happens when you get there

8pm to 8am rule
Regional ordinance allows dogs on any Sardinian beach between 8pm and 8am year-round. Evening swims are the answer in July and August.

Lu Postu (Baja Sardinia), La Sciumara (Cannigione), Le Saline and Pittulongu (Olbia), Poetto seventh stop (Cagliari), Maria Pia towards Fertilia (Alghero), Costa Caddu (San Teodoro), Cala Sinzias (south-east).
Weight limits
Most Costa Smeralda five-stars cap at 10 kg. Aethos and Ma&Ma 5 kg, Cervo Hotel 3 kg. Cala Cuncheddi 15 kg, Punta Est and Su Gologone any size.
Hotel beaches
Almost every private hotel beach bans dogs. Only Cala Cuncheddi has a dog area nearby at Li Cuncheddi.

EUR 10 at Su Gologone, EUR 15 at Felix hotels, EUR 30 to EUR 50 at most five-stars, EUR 150 per stay at W Sardinia and Cervo Hotel.
Best walks
Pevero Health Trail above Porto Cervo, the Supramonte trails from Su Gologone, the Alghero seafront to Maria Pia, and the Poetto promenade in Cagliari.
When to go
May, June, September and October. High summer is hot and the day beaches are closed to dogs.
