Where can my dog actually go?

Scottsdale takes dogs seriously in a way most American resort towns do not. Nineteen hotels on our list welcome them, and several run proper programmes rather than a bowl and a shrug. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess has a pupcierge who arranges sitting and walking, and the kitchen cooks a room-service dish for dogs. The Scottsdale Resort & Spa runs a Pawsh Dining menu and a free Yappy Hour on the second Thursday of the month. The Westin Kierland hands over a Heavenly Dog Bed and opens the Antidote patio to dogs on the first Sunday of each month.

The question that actually decides your booking here is the weight limit, because it varies more than anywhere else we cover. The Omni Montelucia caps at 25 lb and the Four Seasons at Troon North at 30 lb. The Phoenician and the Canyon Suites stop at 40 lb, as do the W and the Westin Kierland. Fifty pounds gets you Sanctuary, Andaz, Hotel Adeline, the Hermosa Inn, Senna House and the Grand Hyatt. Only four take any dog at all: Hotel Valley Ho, Mountain Shadows, the Fairmont Princess and the Bespoke Inn. The Scottsdale Resort & Spa goes to 75 lb.

Three hotels charge nothing. Hotel Valley Ho and Mountain Shadows take two dogs of any size free, and the Four Seasons waives the fee for dogs under 30 lb. Everywhere else runs USD 50 to USD 150, and the Fairmont and the W stack a nightly rate on top of a cleaning fee, so a week costs real money.

Where dogs can actually sit down is the other thing to check. Andaz lets them eat with you on the Weft and Warp patio, which has its own dog menu. Mountain Shadows takes them on Rusty's patio, the Phoenician on the Tavern patio when the weather allows. Nearly everywhere else keeps dogs out of food and drink areas, which is county health code rather than the hotel being difficult.

One practical thing. This is a desert, and from May to September the pavement is hot enough to hurt paws by mid-morning. Walk at dawn and after dark, and pick a resort with grounds you can loop rather than one that needs a road walk.

The heat
May to September, tarmac and paving get hot enough to burn paws well before midday. Walk at first light and after sunset, carry water, and check the ground with the back of your hand before you set off.

Leaving the dog in the room
Mostly no, and worth checking before you book anything with a dinner reservation. The Hermosa Inn, Hotel Adeline and the Grand Hyatt allow it. The Fairmont, Sanctuary and Mountain Shadows allow it crated. The Four Seasons, the Phoenician, Hotel Valley Ho and the Bespoke Inn say no.
Dog parks and trails
Chaparral Park has a three-acre off-lead area split by dog size. Pinnacle Peak Park and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve take dogs on the lead. The Arizona Canal path is flat, shaded in places and runs right through Old Town. Camelback's Echo Canyon and Cholla trails are steep and hot, so treat them as a cool-hour option only.
Where to base yourself
Old Town if you want to walk to dinner, so Hotel Valley Ho, the W, Senna House, the Scott or the Bespoke Inn. Paradise Valley and Camelback for quiet and mountain views. North Scottsdale and Troon North for desert trails from the door.
Best walks
The Arizona Canal path through Old Town, Chaparral Park's three-acre off-lead area, the Pinnacle Peak trail from Troon North, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and the resort grounds themselves at the Fairmont, Andaz and the Scottsdale Resort, all of which are big enough to loop.
When to go
November to April. The days are warm, the evenings are cool and the paving is safe for paws. June through August is genuinely dangerous for dogs outdoors in the middle of the day, so if you must come in summer, book somewhere with grounds and grass and plan everything around dawn and dusk.
