Seattle is generous indoors and strict outdoors. Sixteen hotels on our list take dogs, three of them charge nothing and six set no size limit at all. The city is the firm part. Dogs have to be on a lead everywhere except a designated off-leash area, they aren't permitted on the beaches, athletic fields or children's play areas in city parks, and they can't go inside the Pike Place Market buildings.
What separates these hotels is where the dog can be once you've checked in, and most of them publish very little. Kimpton Palladian in Belltown and Kimpton Hotel Monaco downtown both bring dogs into the nightly wine reception. Willows Lodge in Woodinville has its own grounds and walking paths with waste stations, plus a paw-drying station for the way back in. On the other side, 1 Hotel Seattle keeps dogs out of its dining areas, The State Hotel keeps them out of Ben Paris, and The Woodmark in Kirkland keeps them out of Carillon Kitchen. All three also say a dog can't be left alone in the room, so plan your dinners around that.
Fees run from nothing at 1 Hotel Seattle, Kimpton Palladian and Kimpton Hotel Monaco, through USD 40 a stay at The State Hotel and USD 60 at The Heathman Kirkland, to USD 75 to USD 80 at Populus, The Woodmark, The Alexis and Willows Lodge, and USD 100 at Grand Hyatt and Hyatt Regency Bellevue. Hotel 1000 charges its USD 100 per pet, so two dogs cost USD 200. Watch the weight caps. Four Seasons takes one pet of 25 lbs (11 kg) or less, and the Hyatts, Hotel 1000 and The State Hotel stop at 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg). For a big dog, the two Kimptons are the pick, with no limit and no fee, followed by The Alexis, Populus, Hotel Ändra and The Maxwell, none of which set a size limit.
Two things catch people out. Light rail from the airport takes pets only if they're carried in a small container, so a dog too big to carry needs a car. And nothing is listed yet for Capitol Hill, Ballard and Fremont, or the University District. Hotel Ballard describes itself as entirely pet-free, and downtown the Mayflower Park Hotel says no pets are permitted in any area of the hotel.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Lead rules
- Dogs must be on a lead everywhere in Seattle when off their own property, except inside a designated off-leash area. Waste has to be picked up straight away. The city's parks team patrols for off-lead dogs and for dogs in places they aren't permitted.
- Beaches
- Dogs are not permitted on beaches in Seattle's city parks, nor on organised athletic fields or in children's play areas. The one legal swim is the Magnuson Park off-leash area, which the city says is the only one inside city limits with water access, on Lake Washington's freshwater shoreline.
- Off-leash areas
- Seattle Parks counts 15 dog parks. Magnuson's is 8.6 acres, fully fenced, with a separate small dog area. Golden Gardens Park has an off-leash area too. Close to the hotels, the ones named are Regrade Park in Belltown, Denny Park, Plymouth Pillars Park on First Hill and Dr. Jose Rizal Park on Beacon Hill.
- Pike Place Market
- Dogs aren't allowed in the Market buildings, including the Main Arcade. Only trained service animals go inside. The rule is about the buildings, so with a dog you stick to the streets around them.
- Light rail and buses
- Sound Transit lets pets ride only if they're carried in small containers. That covers Link light rail, Sounder trains and ST Express buses, so a dog too big to carry isn't taking the train in from the airport. We haven't confirmed the King County Metro bus rule, so check Metro's own page before relying on a city bus.
- Ferries and Amtrak
- Washington State Ferries allows dogs on leads in most passenger areas, with some places excluded, so check the ferry system's pet policy for your route. Amtrak takes dogs in a carrier only, up to 20 lbs for pet and carrier together, on trips of up to seven hours on most routes, and pets can't travel on Amtrak Cascades into Canada.
- Leaving a dog in the room
- Not allowed at 1 Hotel Seattle, The State Hotel or The Woodmark. Hotel Ändra allows it if you leave a mobile number, The Maxwell asks you to hang the door sign, and The Heathman Kirkland asks you to tell the front desk. Most of the others don't publish a rule, so ask before you book a dinner.
- Vet
- The Alexis lists BluePearl Pet Hospital at 805 Madison Street as its nearest vet, open 24 hours. Worth saving before you arrive.
- Best walks
- Magnuson Park's 8.6-acre fenced off-leash area for the only legal swim in the city, on Lake Washington. Downtown, Hotel 1000 lists Waterfront Park, Olympic Sculpture Park, Myrtle Edwards Park and Centennial Park as walkable, all on a lead, and Regrade Park in Belltown, Denny Park and Plymouth Pillars Park on First Hill have fenced off-leash areas for a run. Out of town, the grounds and paths at Willows Lodge in the Sammamish River Valley start at the door. We haven't confirmed any rules for Discovery Park or the Burke-Gilman Trail beyond the citywide lead law, so check the city's pages for those.
- When to go
- None of the city's dog rules are seasonal. The lead law, the beach rule and the Pike Place Market rule apply all year, and Magnuson's off-leash area is the swimming spot in any month. The one dated perk is at The State Hotel, which includes a welcome kit with a collapsible bowl, bandana, treats and a dog-friendly Seattle map during National Dog Month in August.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Seattle
Is Seattle dog friendly?+
In the hotels, yes. Sixteen on our list take dogs, three charge no fee and six set no size limit. Out in the city it's stricter: dogs are on a lead everywhere outside designated off-leash areas, they aren't permitted on city park beaches, and they can't go inside the Pike Place Market buildings.
Which Seattle hotels don't charge a pet fee?+
1 Hotel Seattle, Kimpton Palladian and Kimpton Hotel Monaco all take dogs free. The two Kimptons also ask for no deposit and set no size limit. 1 Hotel Seattle may charge for damage or extra cleaning.
How much do Seattle hotels charge for dogs?+
Nothing at 1 Hotel Seattle and the two Kimptons. USD 40 a stay at The State Hotel, USD 60 at The Heathman Kirkland, USD 75 at Populus and The Woodmark, USD 80 at The Alexis and Willows Lodge, and USD 100 at Grand Hyatt and Hyatt Regency Bellevue. Hotel 1000 charges USD 100 per pet. Four Seasons, Hotel Ändra, Hyatt at Olive 8 and The Maxwell don't publish an amount, so ask when booking.
Where should I stay in Seattle with a big dog?+
Kimpton Palladian or Kimpton Hotel Monaco, which have no size or weight limit and no fee. The Alexis, Populus, Hotel Ändra and The Maxwell also set no size limit. Avoid Four Seasons, which takes one pet of 25 lbs (11 kg) or less, and check the 50 lb (about 22.7 kg) caps at the Hyatts, Hotel 1000 and The State Hotel.
Can dogs go on the beach in Seattle?+
Not in the city's parks, where beaches are listed among the places dogs aren't permitted. The exception for swimming is the Magnuson Park off-leash area, the only one inside city limits with water access, on Lake Washington.
Can I take my dog into Pike Place Market?+
Not inside. Dogs, cats and other pets aren't allowed in the Market buildings, including the Main Arcade, and only trained service animals are permitted. The streets outside are a different matter, on a lead.
Can dogs ride the light rail from Seattle airport?+
Only if they're carried in a small container. That's the Sound Transit rule for Link, Sounder and ST Express, so with a medium or large dog you need a car into the city.
Which Seattle hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+
None of the sixteen publishes a yes for a restaurant. The Kimpton Palladian and Kimpton Hotel Monaco welcome dogs at the nightly wine reception. 1 Hotel Seattle, The State Hotel and The Woodmark publish a clear no for their dining areas, and the rest say nothing either way, so ask by name.
Are there dog-friendly hotels in Ballard, Capitol Hill or the University District?+
Nothing is listed in any of them yet. Hotel Ballard describes itself as entirely pet-free. The nearest listed hotels are in Belltown, South Lake Union and Lower Queen Anne.
Where should I stay outside central Seattle with a dog?+
Willows Lodge in Woodinville for grounds and paths at the door. In Kirkland, The Woodmark sits on Lake Washington at Carillon Point for USD 75 a stay, and The Heathman takes two pets for USD 60 in designated lower-floor rooms that need booking ahead. Hyatt Regency Bellevue takes two dogs up to 50 lbs each.
