Where can my dog actually go?

Slovenia has under 50 km of coast, with Koper, Izola, Piran and Portorož all within about 20 km of each other by road, and Postojna and the Karst inland along the A1 motorway towards Ljubljana. For a dog the best thing here is an official dog beach in Portorož with showers, shade and free entry. The catch is that Postojna Cave is closed to dogs, though it has free kennels for ticket holders. Eight hotels are on this list. That is a small number for honest reasons: the coast is short, most of the four-star hotels belong to a handful of groups that each publish one rule, and nine more Portorož hotels are listed on our Lake Bled and Slovenia page.

Very few hotels here say where the dog can actually go, and that is what separates them. Majerija, a restaurant with rooms at Slap in the Vipava Valley, welcomes dogs and brings water in a dog bowl. At Postojna Cave Hotel Jama guests have had their dog with them on the breakfast terrace in summer. The two San Simon Resort hotels in Izola, Haliaetum and Mirta, allow dogs on a lead in marked parts of the resort. Hotel Palace Portorož puts a bed, a water bowl and treats in the room but doesn't state where the dog can go in the hotel, and neither do Remisens Hotel Metropol, Hotel Neptun or Hotel Grand Koper. Ask by name before you book.

Fees start at EUR 20 a night at Hotel Jama for a dog up to 10 kg and jump to EUR 45 over that. Haliaetum, Mirta and Neptun charge EUR 25 a day, the Metropol EUR 27 per pet per night and the Palace EUR 35 per dog per night. Majerija and Grand Koper publish no fee. The Palace and Hotel Jama take dogs of any size, which makes them the picks for a big dog. Neptun takes small animals only, in designated rooms, and Grand Koper confirms your dog's size and weight in writing before you arrive.

A few things to know before you search. Hotel Palace Portorož is the former Kempinski Palace and still turns up under the old name. Hotel Salinera in Strunjan does not take pets, Perla in Nova Gorica does not take pets, and at Adria Ankaran the main Hotel Convent building does not take them either. We have no hotel on the list yet in Piran, Strunjan, Ankaran, Nova Gorica or Goriška Brda.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

The Portorož dog beach
Portorož has an official dog beach, run as Monty's Dog Beach & Bar at Obala 26, on the former Lucija beach below Hotel Metropol's outdoor pool. It has dog showers, shade, a play area and a bar, and entry, swimming and the showers are free. No opening dates are published, so check before an out-of-season trip.
Ordinary beaches
Dogs can't go on the main Portorož public beach, and the local tourist board says there are no restrictions on other public coastal areas in its own municipality. In Ankaran dogs may come onto Valdoltra, Sv. Katarina, Študent and Debeli rtič beaches with their owners but may not swim there. Swimming in Ankaran is at Sv. Jernej beach and at a marked section at the eastern end of the Adria Ankaran resort, which has no lifeguard. We could not confirm a dog beach or a beach rule for Izola or Koper, so ask locally.
Postojna Cave
Dogs are not allowed inside Postojna Cave or the other attractions in the park. They are welcome in the park grounds, and there are kennels in the shady part of the park near the EXPO Cave Karst, free for ticket holders and subject to availability. The park doesn't say how many kennels there are, so have a plan B on a busy day.
Predjama Castle and Škocjan Caves
We could not confirm a dog rule for either. Predjama is 9 km from the Postojna kennels and the park doesn't say whether there are kennels at the castle. Check with Postojna Cave Park about Predjama and with the Škocjan Caves park before you go, and don't plan on leaving a dog at either.
Lipica stud farm
Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Lipica and must be on a lead for the whole visit. The one exception is the covered riding hall where the show takes place, which dogs can't enter. So the restriction is the hall during performances, not the estate.
Salt pans and nature parks
At the Sečovlje salt pans dogs are not allowed in the Lera area, the northern working part with the main visitor entrance. The park says nothing either way about the southern Fontanigge part, where the salt museum is, so ask before you go. Strunjan Landscape Park publishes no dog rule at all, and we could not confirm one for the Parenzana trail.
Fees and size rules
EUR 20 a night at Hotel Jama up to 10 kg and EUR 45 over. EUR 25 a day at Haliaetum, Mirta and Neptun, EUR 27 per pet per night at the Metropol and EUR 35 per dog per night at the Palace. The Palace and Hotel Jama take any size, Neptun takes small animals only without giving a weight, and Grand Koper and Majerija publish no fee, so confirm both in writing.
One dog or two
Haliaetum and Mirta at San Simon take one dog per room. None of the other six hotels publishes how many dogs it will take, so say so when you book if you travel with two.
Best walks
The flat Portorož seafront promenade runs about 3 km round the bay past Bernardin to Piran, and the other way towards the Lucija marina. In Izola, the seafront path from San Simon bay reaches the old town and harbour in about 15 minutes, and the coastal path in the other direction heads towards Strunjan. In Koper, the harbour promenade runs along the seafront towards Žusterna and on to Izola. Inland, the Postojna Cave Park paths follow the Pivka river, the farm lanes at Slap run through the vineyards and orchards of the upper Vipava Valley, and the Lipica estate takes dogs on a lead.
When to go
Summer is when the coast works best with a dog, as the Portorož dog beach is built around swimming, showers and shade, and Hotel Jama's breakfast terrace is a summer arrangement. The dog beach publishes no opening dates, so check it is running before a trip in the cooler months. Postojna Cave is closed to dogs all year, so the season changes nothing there.

Dog-friendly hotels in Slovenian Coast and Karst

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Slovenian Coast and Karst

Is the Slovenian coast dog friendly?+

Yes, with limits. Portorož has a free official dog beach with showers and shade, and the seafront promenades at Portorož, Izola and Koper give long flat walks. The hotel list is short at eight, and most of them don't publish where the dog can go inside, so ask before you book.

Is there a dog beach in Portorož?+

Yes. Monty's Dog Beach & Bar is at Obala 26, on the former Lucija beach below Hotel Metropol's outdoor pool. It has dog showers, shade, a play area and a bar, and entry and swimming are free. Dogs can't go on the main Portorož public beach.

Can dogs go into Postojna Cave?+

No. Dogs are not allowed inside the cave or the other attractions in the park. There are free kennels for ticket holders in the shady part of the park near the EXPO Cave Karst, subject to availability, and dogs are welcome in the park grounds.

Can I take my dog to Predjama Castle or the Škocjan Caves?+

We could not confirm a dog rule for either, so we won't guess. Check with Postojna Cave Park about Predjama and with the Škocjan Caves park directly. The only kennels we know of are at Postojna Cave, 9 km from Predjama.

How much do hotels on the Slovenian coast charge for dogs?+

EUR 25 a day at Hotel Haliaetum, Hotel Mirta and Hotel Neptun, EUR 27 per pet per night at Remisens Hotel Metropol and EUR 35 per dog per night at Hotel Palace Portorož. Inland, Postojna Cave Hotel Jama charges EUR 20 a night up to 10 kg and EUR 45 over. Hotel Grand Koper and Majerija publish no fee.

Where should I stay on the Slovenian coast with a big dog?+

Hotel Palace Portorož takes any size at EUR 35 per dog per night, with a bed, bowl and treats included. Inland, Postojna Cave Hotel Jama takes any size and charges EUR 45 a night over 10 kg. Hotel Neptun takes small animals only, and Hotel Grand Koper decides on size and weight before it confirms.

Are dogs allowed at the Lipica stud farm?+

Yes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome and must stay on a lead for the whole visit. They can't enter the covered riding hall where the show takes place.

Can dogs swim at the beaches in Ankaran?+

Only at two places: Sv. Jernej beach and a marked section at the eastern end of the Adria Ankaran resort, which has no lifeguard. On Valdoltra, Sv. Katarina, Študent and Debeli rtič beaches dogs can come onto the beach with you but may not swim. That is Ankaran's own rule and doesn't apply to the rest of the coast.

Are dogs allowed at the Sečovlje salt pans?+

Not in the Lera area, the northern working part of the salt pans where the main visitor entrance is. The park says nothing either way about the southern Fontanigge part, so ask the park before you go.
