Where can my dog actually go?

This is a short page, and we'd rather say so than pad it. Seven hotels are on our list: four in Sonoma County, in Glen Ellen, Santa Rosa, Guerneville and Occidental, and three further north on the Mendocino coast, which is Mendocino County and a separate drive. MacArthur Place, Montage Healdsburg, The Madrona, Hotel Healdsburg and Harmon Guest House are listed on our Napa Valley page, so Sonoma town and Healdsburg aren't covered here.

What separates the seven is where the dog can be, and the better stories are on the coast. Little River Inn offers pet-friendly dinner dining with an advance reservation and marks on-leash walking areas on its own property map. Stanford Inn & Resort welcomes dogs in the lobby and across its ten acres, but not in the dining room or at the pool. In wine country, Vinarosa Resort & Spa lets leashed dogs across much of a 92 acre vineyard estate, with the pool and spa out of bounds. Inn at Occidental opens its courtyard and veranda to dogs on a lead and keeps them out of the living room and dining room. The Stavrand keeps dogs out of the Stavrand Hall dining room and Belden House.

Fees split the same way. Wine-country hotels charge a flat USD 150 per stay at The Stavrand and at Vinarosa, which adds USD 50 for a second dog. Olea Hotel is USD 35 per pet per night and Inn at Occidental USD 40. On the Mendocino coast, Little River Inn and The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek charge USD 30 per pet per night, capped at USD 120 at Schoolhouse Creek, and Stanford Inn is USD 45 per stay. For a big dog, The Stavrand takes all sizes and breeds and Little River Inn has no size or breed restrictions. Olea Hotel takes dogs up to 85 lbs (about 38.6 kg).

Two things to know before you plan. Six of the seven don't let you leave the dog alone in the room, and Olea allows it only in a crate. And we have nothing listed yet in Petaluma, Geyserville, Sebastopol, Kenwood, Bodega Bay or Jenner. On the Sonoma Coast itself, The Lodge at Bodega Bay doesn't permit pets in the hotel.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Sonoma Coast beaches
Sonoma Coast State Park names the beaches where dogs are allowed on a lead: Marshall Gulch, Carmet Beach, Schoolhouse Beach, Portuguese Beach, Duncan's Cove, Wright's Beach, Furlong Gulch, Shell Beach, Blind Beach and Russian Gulch. Dogs aren't allowed on North or South Salmon Creek Beach or anywhere on Bodega Dunes Beach, to protect snowy plovers, or at Goat Rock Beach, where harbour seals pup from March to August. That's three named beaches closed and about ten open.
Redwoods
At Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve near Guerneville, dogs on a lead are allowed only on the main paved road, in one developed picnic area and in a registered campsite at Bullfrog Pond Campground. No dirt trails or dirt roads. You can walk under the redwoods, on tarmac.
Regional parks
Sonoma County Regional Parks allow leashed, attended dogs except where signs say otherwise, on a lead of six feet at most. All regional park campgrounds allow leashed pets. The parks don't publish a list of the restricted sites, so read the signs at the gate.
Trains and flights
The SMART train takes small pets only, in a carrier that fits on your lap or on the floor in front of you. Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport is served by Alaska, American and Southwest and has its own SMART station. We haven't confirmed a pet relief area at the airport, so ask your airline about that and its cabin rule.
Wineries
Dog rules are set winery by winery and none is confirmed here. Olea Hotel says many local wineries are happy to have your dog along, which is encouraging but not a policy. Ring each tasting room before you go.
Designated rooms
Olea Hotel, Inn at Occidental and The Stavrand take dogs in named rooms only, and The Stavrand's must be booked in advance. The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek takes pets in any cottage or room and asks for proof of rabies and Bordetella vaccination within the last 12 months.
Not confirmed
Vinarosa appears to be the Santa Rosa estate that traded as Vintners Resort, which we haven't seen stated in writing, so confirm with the hotel when you book. The city's rule for dogs on Sonoma Plaza isn't confirmed either, and nor are the beach rules on the Mendocino coast, so check the official pages for both.
Best walks
On the Sonoma Coast, Shell Beach, Portuguese Beach, Schoolhouse Beach, Wright's Beach and Blind Beach, all on a lead. The main paved road through Armstrong Redwoods near Guerneville. The 92 acres of vineyard at Vinarosa if you're staying there. Near Glen Ellen, Olea Hotel points guests to an off-leash dog park two miles away. On the Mendocino coast, the marked on-leash areas at Little River Inn and the ten acres at Stanford Inn, which also directs guests to the bluff-top trails and canoe hire on Big River.
When to go
Nothing on this page closes for a season. The one dated rule is on the coast: Goat Rock Beach is closed to dogs, and it's where harbour seals pup from March to August, so use the neighbouring Blind Beach on a lead. We haven't confirmed any official guidance on summer heat or wildfire smoke for the county, so check current conditions before you travel.

Dog-friendly hotels in Sonoma County

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Sonoma County

Is Sonoma County dog friendly?+

Yes, with limits worth knowing. Hotels here take dogs for a fee and mostly keep them out of pools and indoor dining, and nearly all ask you not to leave the dog alone in the room. The coast is the easy part, with about ten named state park beaches open to leashed dogs.

How much do Sonoma County hotels charge for dogs?+

USD 150 per stay at The Stavrand and at Vinarosa, which adds USD 50 for a second dog. USD 35 per pet per night at Olea Hotel and USD 40 at Inn at Occidental. On the Mendocino coast, USD 30 per pet per night at Little River Inn and The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek, and USD 45 per stay at Stanford Inn.

Where should I stay in Sonoma County with a big dog?+

The Stavrand in Guerneville takes dogs of all sizes and breeds, two per room. Olea Hotel in Glen Ellen takes dogs up to 85 lbs (about 38.6 kg). On the Mendocino coast, Little River Inn has no size or breed restrictions, and The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek suggests its larger cottages for bigger dogs.

Which Sonoma Coast beaches allow dogs?+

Leashed dogs are allowed at Marshall Gulch, Carmet Beach, Schoolhouse Beach, Portuguese Beach, Duncan's Cove, Wright's Beach, Furlong Gulch, Shell Beach, Blind Beach and Russian Gulch. They aren't allowed on North or South Salmon Creek Beach, Bodega Dunes Beach or Goat Rock Beach.

Can dogs go into Armstrong Redwoods?+

Only on a lead on the main paved road, in one developed picnic area and in a registered campsite at Bullfrog Pond Campground. Dogs aren't allowed on any dirt trail or dirt road in the reserve.

Can I eat with my dog at a Sonoma County hotel?+

On this page, Little River Inn on the Mendocino coast is the one with published dining access, pet-friendly dinner by advance reservation. Stanford Inn, The Stavrand and Inn at Occidental keep dogs out of their dining rooms. The others don't publish a rule, so ask about terraces when you book.

Why are Mendocino hotels on the Sonoma County page?+

Because the list for Sonoma County is short and the better access stories are on the Mendocino coast. Little River Inn, Stanford Inn & Resort and The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek are in Mendocino County, north of the Sonoma line, so treat them as a second stop and not a day trip.

Where are the Healdsburg and Sonoma town hotels?+

On our Napa Valley page, which covers both. This page has nothing in Petaluma, Geyserville, Sebastopol, Kenwood, Bodega Bay or Jenner yet.

Research updated 2026-10-04. Policies change, always confirm with the hotel.
