Where can my dog actually go?

Stockholm is easier than most European capitals for a dog and harder than it looks for a luxury one. The city is built around water and parkland you can walk for hours, dogs travel free on the whole SL network, and Sweden's position on dogs in dining rooms is more relaxed than almost anywhere else in Europe. Twenty-three hotels take dogs. What Stockholm doesn't have is many five-stars among them. The Grand Hôtel is pet free in writing, Bank Hotel and Hotel Kungsträdgården take assistance dogs only, Berns refuses dogs in the hotel and the restaurant both, and Hotel Hasselbacken, the obvious Djurgården answer, is closed for renovation until 2028.

The one that separates itself is At Six on Brunkebergstorg, which says on three separate pages that four-legged friends are welcome and that yes, your dog can come too, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner at Brasserie at Six. That's the best access story in the city and nobody else comes near it. Mornington Hotel Stockholm City does the next rarest thing, naming where the dog may sit downstairs, in the lobby and in part of the restaurant. Hotel Rival takes small dogs in Watson's Bar. Lydmar on Blasieholmen publishes SEK 265 a night and will arrange a dog sitter through the concierge, which is a quiet contrast with its neighbour the Grand Hôtel. The six Scandics are honest in the other direction, pet rooms only and no dogs in the bar, restaurant or spa. Everybody else publishes a room and a fee and says nothing about where the dog can go once it leaves it. That silence is the whole gap here, because in Sweden a restaurant saying no is a house rule rather than the law.

Fees run SEK 200 to SEK 1,000. The six Scandics, Anglais, Haymarket, Downtown Camper, Grand Central, Malmen and Gamla Stan, are SEK 200 for the whole stay, which is the cheapest in the city. Elite Hotel Stockholm Plaza and Elite Hotel Adlon are SEK 200 a night with waste bags and treats in the rate and a bowl lent out. Lydmar is SEK 265 a night, At Six SEK 275 a night with the dog's amenities included but not itemised. The Hilton Stockholm Slussen is SEK 450 for the stay and non-refundable. Hotel Diplomat is SEK 1,000 for the stay and gives the most complete package in town, a dog bed, a blanket, chew toys, treats and two bowls. Ett Hem in Östermalm publishes no charge at all and lists dog bowls and a dog basket among the house facilities, for up to two dogs. Nobis, Miss Clara, Hotel Skeppsholmen, Mornington, Hobo, the Clarion Sign, the Radisson Blu Waterfront, Hotel Rival and Villa Källhagen all take dogs without publishing a figure, so get it in writing when you book.

Weight is where this city catches people out. Hotel Diplomat caps at 8 kg, Hotel Rival at 10 kg and the Hilton Slussen takes small dogs only, and only in Twin Deluxe View and Executive rooms. Nobody publishes a big-dog yes. The rest simply don't state a limit, which is an unknown rather than a green light, so a large dog means a call before you pay. The other structural thing to understand is that almost every yes in Sweden is a room-category yes rather than a hotel-wide one. A handful of designated dog rooms, booked direct, silence about everything downstairs. If you book online without flagging the dog you'll usually end up in a room the dog can't have.

One more thing about the ratings. Sweden has no official hotel star classification, so the stars on any Swedish listing, this one included, are market positioning taken from the hotels' own presentation rather than an awarded grade. That's why a Swedish four-star can outclass a five-star elsewhere, and why the star is the wrong thing to book on here. Book on the room category and the access answer instead.

    The only central Stockholm hotel that puts dogs in its own dining room in writing, and it says so on three separate pages. Brasserie at Six takes dogs at the breakfast buffet, at lunch and at dinner, so you're not eating in shifts. SEK 275 a night, with the dog's accommodation and amenities included in that charge, though the hotel doesn't itemise them. No weight limit published, which means ask rather than assume.

Humlegården is five minutes north and Strandvägen and the Djurgården bridge about fifteen the other way.

    The most complete dog package in Stockholm and the best walking address in the centre. The Very Important Pet package lists a dog bed, a blanket, chew toys, treats and two bowls, at SEK 1,000 for the stay, in a limited set of rooms booked through the reservations team. The ceiling is 8 kg, which rules most dogs out, so this is a small-dog pick. Strandvägen's quay is at the door and Djurgården is a flat ten minutes across the bridge.

What happens when you get there

Dogs in restaurants, and why Sweden is different
Livsmedelsverket, the national food agency, says dogs shouldn't be in restaurant kitchens or anywhere food is prepared, handled or stored, but that they may usually be in the restaurant or café itself and sometimes in the food shop. Its Kontrollwiki reasoning, updated 8 April 2026, is that a dining room isn't a food handling area, so the EU hygiene rule doesn't bite there. The decision is always the operator's, and allergic or frightened guests are named as legitimate grounds to refuse. So a Stockholm restaurant saying no is a house rule, not the law, and one saying yes isn't bending anything. Guide and assistance dogs should always be admitted.
Leads, and the two date ranges
Stockholm has koppeltvång, a lead requirement in public places, which doesn't apply inside the dog exercise areas the city provides. There are two kinds, fenced hundrastgårdar and open hundrastområden inside parks where the dog still has to be under supervision and recall. Two dates matter. Dogs aren't allowed at swimming beaches from 1 June to 31 August, which covers the Djurgården and Långholmen bathing spots in exactly the months people visit. And from 1 March to 20 August a dog may not run loose in forest or open country where there's wildlife.
Allemansrätten with a dog
The right of public access lets you walk, rest and pass over most land whoever owns it, and it applies with a dog. Naturvårdsverket adds the dog owner's share. Between 1 March and 20 August you must keep extra watch over the dog in nature, and the agency is blunt that only extremely well trained dogs can be loose in that window. Outside it the duty doesn't disappear, the dog goes on a lead or line if you can't control it. In every Swedish national park the lead is required all year, and the owner carries strict liability for damage or serious nuisance.
Getting around
SL charges nothing extra for pets across the metro, buses, commuter trains and trams, as long as the dog is on a lead or in a carrier. There are allergy-restricted sections on buses and trains where pets aren't allowed, marked on board, and SL doesn't publish a carriage number, so look for the signage and move if you've picked the wrong end. Guide dogs are permitted everywhere on the network. Customer services on +46 8 600 10 00 is staffed round the clock if you want a specific line confirmed.
Archipelago boats
Waxholmsbolaget, the public archipelago operator, publishes no dog rule anywhere on its travel information or on-board pages, so the position is unknown and worth confirming on +46 8 600 10 00 before you plan a day out to Vaxholm, Sandhamn or Utö. Strömma, the commercial sightseeing operator, is more explicit, saying the rules vary by tour and that pets aren't allowed in restaurants and dining areas on board. So a dining cruise is out and a deck crossing is a question per boat.
Djurgården
Djurgården sits inside Kungliga nationalstadsparken, which is a national city park rather than a national park, so the strict all-year lead rule for national parks doesn't automatically apply. What does apply is the city's own lead rule plus the 1 March to 20 August wildlife period. Neither the Royal Djurgården visitor site nor the park administration publishes a dog page, so treat any claim of off-lead ground there as unknown. The walking is the Djurgårdsbrunn canal towpath, the Rosendal and Blockhusudden woods and the Djurgårdsbrunnsvägen verges, which give an hour without crossing a road.
Flying in
Arlanda is about 40 km north of the city and Bromma is much closer in for a small number of domestic and short European routes. SAS, whose hub Arlanda is, carries a dog in the cabin at a maximum of 8 kg including the carrier, with the carrier no bigger than 40 x 25 x 23 cm, at SEK 750 one way within Scandinavia, Europe and the Middle East and SEK 550 domestic. SAS does not carry pets in the cabin to or from the United Kingdom at all, where they must travel as cargo, and not in Business to or from North America and Asia.
Vets
AniCura Regiondjursjukhuset Bagarmossen at Ljusnevägen 17 is one of the few animal hospitals in greater Stockholm open around the clock every day of the year, on +46 10 147 90 00, about twenty minutes from Södermalm by car. AniCura Specialistdjursjukhuset Albano at Rinkebyvägen 21A in Danderyd is the daytime alternative on the same central number, but its emergency reception closes around 21:00, so it isn't a night option.
Best walks
Djurgården is the best ground in the city, with the Djurgårdsbrunn canal towpath starting at Villa Källhagen's door and the woods and meadows towards Rosendal and Blockhusudden giving you an hour without a road. Getting there from Östermalm is a flat walk along the Strandvägen quay and across Djurgårdsbron. Humlegården's gravel avenues and old oaks sit right across the street from Scandic Anglais and five minutes from Ett Hem and Mornington. Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen make a twenty minute traffic-free loop with water on both sides, starting at Hotel Skeppsholmen's gate. On Södermalm, Monteliusvägen is the cliff path with the best view in Stockholm, with the Söder Mälarstrand quay running over a kilometre below it, and Vitabergsparken, Nytorget and Tantolunden cover the east and south. In Norrmalm, Observatorielunden is a proper wooded climb off the pavement, with Kungsträdgården and Norra Bantorget for the short evening outing. Out on Utö, the pine trails from Gruvbyn run about half an hour to Rävstavik and the long shallow sand at Ålö.
When to go
May and September are the sweet spot, long light and open terraces without the beach ban. June to August is the city at its best for people and its most restricted for dogs, because swimming beaches are closed to them from 1 June to 31 August, which takes out the Djurgården and Långholmen bathing spots in the exact months you'd want them. The same summer stretch, 1 March to 20 August, is the wildlife period when a dog can't run loose in forest or open country. Autumn is good walking, Djurgården's woods are at their best in October, and winter is short on daylight but the city is used to it and the parks stay open. If the archipelago is the plan, check the boat operator's dog position before you build a day round it.

Where should I stay in Stockholm with a big dog?+

Nowhere publishes a big-dog yes, so this is a phone call rather than a booking. What you can do is rule out the three that publish a cap, Hotel Diplomat at 8 kg, Hotel Rival at 10 kg and the Hilton Slussen, which takes small dogs only in two room categories. The Scandics, Elite, At Six and Lydmar publish no limit, which isn't the same as having none, so ring and get it confirmed before you pay.

Can dogs go on Stockholm beaches?+

Not between 1 June and 31 August. The city's rule keeps dogs off swimming beaches for that whole period, which covers the Djurgården and Långholmen bathing spots in the months you'd most want them. Outside those dates they're fine. Utö in the archipelago is the exception worth knowing about, where the sand at Ålö is about half an hour's walk from Gruvbyn.

Do dogs travel free on Stockholm public transport?+

Yes. SL makes no extra charge for pets on the metro, buses, commuter trains or trams, with the dog on a lead or in a carrier. The only thing to watch is the allergy-restricted section on buses and trains, which is signed on board, and there's no fixed carriage number, so look for the sign and move if you're in the wrong part. Guide dogs are allowed everywhere on the network.

Which Stockholm hotel is best for a Djurgården stay?+

Villa Källhagen, because with Hasselbacken closed for renovation until 2028 it's the only hotel actually inside Djurgården's parkland that still takes dogs. The canal towpath runs from the door in both directions and you can reach Blockhusudden without crossing a road. Dogs are taken on request and a charge may apply, neither of which the hotel publishes, so agree both when you book.
