Where can my dog actually go?

Strasbourg is a compact, walkable city, which is most of what a dog needs. The Grande Île is ringed by water and largely pedestrian, so you can walk from the Cathedral to Petite France without meeting much traffic. Twenty-seven hotels on our list take dogs, from the Art Deco Maison Rouge to a boutique four-star by the station charging six euro a night.

The thing that separates them here is not the fee, it's where the dog is actually allowed to be. Maison Rouge lets dogs into the Winstub and the wine bar. Les Haras, in the old royal stables, lists dogs as accepted in its brasserie, which is rare for a kitchen of that standing. voco The Garden has had dogs at breakfast and has a garden on site. Hôtel de l'Europe takes dogs free, puts a bed in the room and allows them at breakfast at the bar. Diana Dauphine sets out a welcome pack, snacks and bowls before you arrive. Cour du Corbeau is clear the other way, dogs are not in the breakfast room, which is worth knowing rather than a mark against it.

Fees run from nothing at Hôtel de l'Europe and OKKO, through six euro at Tandem and Diana Dauphine, up to thirty-five at Maison Rouge and the Hilton. Watch the weight limits. Aloft and the AC Hotel take one dog up to 6 kg only, Maison Rouge caps at 15 kg and Hotel des Vosges at 25 kg, while Origami publishes no limit at all, which makes it the pick for a big dog.

Be careful with hotel names here. Aloft calls itself City Centre but sits out on the Avenue du Rhin, and the Hilton, the AC Hotel and OKKO are all outside the old town. If you want to step out of the door into the Strasbourg you came for, stay on the Grande Île or in Petite France.

What happens when you get there

Walking the Grande Île
The island is ringed by the Ill and mostly pedestrian, so the Cathedral, Place Kléber and Petite France link up without much traffic. The cobbles are uneven in Petite France, which is worth knowing for an older dog or small paws.
Parks
The Parc de l'Orangerie is the big one, with lakes, long lawns and proper paths, out by the European institutions. The Parc du Contades is smaller and closer in. The Jardin des Deux Rives runs along the Rhine on the Neudorf side.
Trams
Several of these hotels sit outside the old town, so the tram matters. Check the current CTS rule on dogs before you travel rather than assuming, and keep a lead and a muzzle to hand.

Rare here and worth asking about by name. Reported yes at voco The Garden, at Hôtel de l'Europe at the bar, and at Diana Dauphine. A clear no at Cour du Corbeau and at OKKO's buffet.

The Ill quays right around the Grande Île, Petite France and the Covered Bridges up to the Barrage Vauban, the Parc de l'Orangerie for lakes and long lawns, the Parc du Contades closer in, and the Jardin des Deux Rives along the Rhine.
When to go
May to September for the terraces and the quays. The Christmas markets in December are lovely but very crowded, which is a lot for most dogs, so go early in the day or stay out on the Orangerie side.
