Where can my dog actually go?

Idaho gives a dog a lot of room. The Wood River Trail is a paved, year-round path of more than 20 miles joining Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue. In Boise, most of the Ridge to Rivers trails in the foothills allow off-lead walking under voice control. The catch in the Wood River Valley is transport: the free Mountain Rides buses take service animals only, so a dog and no car is a problem.

Six hotels on our list take dogs, and they are in three towns that are hours apart by road, so this is a page for choosing a base, not for touring. Limelight Ketchum and Knob Hill Inn are in Ketchum. Hotel Renegade, Inn at 500 Capitol and The Avery Hotel are in downtown Boise. One Lakeside Hotel is in Coeur d'Alene. Nothing is listed yet in Sun Valley itself, in Hailey or in McCall. What separates the six is where the dog can be. Limelight Ketchum welcomes dogs in its common areas as well as the room, and keeps them out of the bar, the pool area and the Lounge during food service hours. Hotel Renegade welcomes dogs in its lobby bar, and not in its restaurants. The other four publish nothing beyond the room, so ask before you travel.

Fees split into nightly and flat. Limelight Ketchum charges USD 50 per pet, per night, Knob Hill Inn USD 50 per dog, per night, and Hotel Renegade a USD 50 nightly fee. Inn at 500 Capitol charges USD 75 per stay, The Avery USD 75 per dog, per stay, and One Lakeside USD 75 per stay. On a week away the flat fees are far cheaper. Only one hotel publishes a weight figure: Hotel Renegade takes two dogs with a combined weight of no more than 75 lbs (about 34 kg), and asks you to get in touch about larger dogs. None of the six publishes a no-limit policy, so with a big dog, ring first.

Rooms for dogs are limited at Limelight Ketchum, Knob Hill Inn and One Lakeside. Knob Hill asks you to phone 208.726.8010 before you book, and One Lakeside puts dogs in designated suites reserved in advance.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Three towns, hours apart
Ketchum, Boise and Coeur d'Alene are hours apart by road. Pick the one you're visiting and treat the hotels in the other two as separate trips. Two hotels are in Ketchum, three in downtown Boise and one in Coeur d'Alene.
Buses in the Wood River Valley
Mountain Rides is free, with no fares on fixed routes, but only service animals are allowed on its vehicles. A pet dog can't ride the valley bus between Ketchum, Sun Valley and Hailey, so plan on a car.
Wood River Trail
A paved, multi-use, year-round path of more than 20 miles linking Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley. We couldn't confirm the trail's dog rules, so keep a lead on and check with the Blaine County Recreation District before you go.
Boise foothills
Most Ridge to Rivers trails are controlled off-lead: carry a lead at all times and keep the dog within 30 feet and under strict sight and voice control. Several trails are on-lead at all times to protect wildlife and plants, so read the signs at the trailhead. On City of Boise property the fine is USD 81.50.
Boise River Greenbelt
A 29-mile tree-lined pathway on both sides of the Boise River through the middle of the city. Lead rules for the Greenbelt are not confirmed, so keep the dog on one and check the City of Boise's parks page.
Fees
USD 50 a night at Limelight Ketchum and Knob Hill Inn, per dog, and USD 50 nightly at Hotel Renegade, where it is worth confirming whether that is per dog or per room. USD 75 per stay at Inn at 500 Capitol and One Lakeside, and USD 75 per dog, per stay at The Avery.
Coeur d'Alene
One Lakeside Hotel is the one listing here: designated suites, two dogs at most, USD 75 per stay. McEuen Park downtown has an off-lead dog park and Atlas Waterfront Dog Park is a short drive away.
Forest and resort rules
We couldn't confirm dog rules for Sawtooth National Forest and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, or for the Sun Valley Resort gondola and village. Check the Forest Service's official page for lead requirements at trailheads and ask the resort directly before planning around either.
Best walks
In the Wood River Valley, the Wood River Trail, more than 20 paved miles through Ketchum, Sun Valley, Hailey and Bellevue. In Boise, the 29-mile Greenbelt along the river and the Ridge to Rivers trails in the foothills, most of them off-lead under voice control. Downtown Boise also walks well with a dog: Inn at 500 Capitol lists White Dog Brewing Company two minutes away and Boise Brewing four, with Bittercreek Alehouse and 10 Barrel Brewing further on. In Coeur d'Alene, the off-lead park at McEuen Park downtown and Atlas Waterfront Dog Park.
When to go
The Wood River Trail is a year-round path, so Ketchum works with a dog in any season on that count. What we can't give you is a season-by-season rule for the forest trailheads or the Sun Valley gondola, because neither is confirmed, so check the Forest Service and the resort before a summer hiking trip or a ski week. In Boise, the foothills trails that are on-lead at all times are signed, whatever the month.
