For a dog, Telluride is really two places joined by a gondola. Mountain Village sits above the town, and the free gondola between them takes pets in about half of its cabins and reaches Telluride in around 12 minutes. That makes Mountain Village the strong base. Be clear on the size of this list, though: four hotels, three in Mountain Village and one in Telluride town. Nothing is listed yet in Durango, Ouray, Silverton, Crested Butte or Pagosa Springs. Aspen has its own page.
What separates the four is how much each one puts in writing. Mountain Lodge Telluride is the clearest: dogs are welcome in designated lounge and outdoor areas, they aren't in the restaurant or on the pool deck, and they can't be left alone in the room. Madeline Hotel & Residences gives the warmest welcome, with a bed, treats, water bowls and a toy on arrival and dog walking and pet sitting through the concierge, but it doesn't publish a rule for its dining rooms, bar or pool. Fairmont Heritage Place, Franz Klammer Lodge and Element 52 are both residences run with hotel service, and at both only some residences take dogs.
Fees are far apart. Franz Klammer Lodge charges USD 25 per dog per night. Mountain Lodge charges USD 50 a day, capped at USD 150 a week. Madeline charges a USD 175 cleaning fee per stay, and Element 52 a one-time USD 250 per pet per stay. Madeline is the pick for a big dog, with two dogs and no weight or breed limits. Mountain Lodge and Franz Klammer Lodge also take two but don't publish a size limit, and Element 52 publishes neither a number nor a size, so confirm both with the hotel when you book.
Two warnings. The gondola doesn't run all year. It closes between its summer and winter seasons, from 26 October to 19 November 2026 and again after 4 April 2027, and a Mountain Village stay in those weeks means driving to town. And beyond Telluride the region's hotels are harder work with a dog. Hotel Columbia in Telluride is closed for renovations through 2027. In Ouray, the Beaumont Hotel & Spa takes service animals only, Hotel Ouray and the Hot Springs Inn don't take pets, and Ouray Riverside Resort keeps dogs to its RV park and rustic cabins. The Wyman Hotel in Silverton doesn't take pets either.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- The gondola
- The Telluride to Mountain Village gondola is free, and about 50 percent of its cabins are pet accessible. It stops at Telluride, San Sophia, Mountain Village Center and Market Plaza, takes about 12 minutes from Telluride to Mountain Village and runs 6:30 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. Its lead rule for pets isn't published on the gondola page, so bring a lead and check at the station.
- Gondola closed weeks
- The gondola runs in two seasons: summer from 21 May to 25 October 2026, and winter from 20 November 2026 to 4 April 2027. Between those dates it doesn't run. If you're staying in Mountain Village in late October, most of November or the spring gap, you'll be driving to Telluride.
- Fees
- USD 25 per dog per night at Fairmont Heritage Place, Franz Klammer Lodge. USD 50 a day at Mountain Lodge Telluride, capped at USD 150 a week. USD 175 per stay at Madeline. A one-time USD 250 per pet per stay at Element 52.
- Limited dog rooms
- Element 52 and Franz Klammer Lodge both take dogs in a limited number of residences only. At Franz Klammer they're allocated first come, first served, and at Element 52 you need to check that your specific unit allows pets before you book. Mountain Lodge doesn't allow a dog to be left alone in the room. The other three don't publish a rule on that, so ask.
- Mesa Verde National Park
- Dogs on a lead of six feet or shorter are allowed on roads, parking lots and paved areas at Mesa Top Loop and Park Point, and on all trails at Wetherill Mesa except those to Step House and Long House. They aren't allowed in any ancestral site or building, which in practice puts the cliff dwellings off limits with a dog. A kennel operates at Morefield Campground. Ring 970-565-2133 for hours and prices.
- Black Canyon of the Gunnison
- Dogs on a six-foot lead are allowed in picnic areas, campgrounds and parking lots, on the paths to the overlooks, along roads open to vehicles and on two trails: the Rim Rock Trail and the North Rim Chasm View Nature Trail. They aren't allowed on any other hiking trail, on inner canyon routes or in the wilderness, and can't be left unattended or tied up. The overlooks work with a dog. Most of the hikes don't.
- Durango and Silverton train
- The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad doesn't take pets. Only service animals travel. The railroad asks guests to use a daytime boarding facility in Durango and not to leave a dog in a parked car, though it doesn't name one.
- Winter driving
- Colorado switches on its traction law during winter storms or severe conditions on state highways, with notice on highway signs and COtrip.org. When it's on you need AWD or 4WD with mud-and-snow, winter or all-weather tyres at 3/16 inch tread, or chains or an approved alternative traction device. Under the passenger vehicle chain law every vehicle must carry chains or an approved alternative.
- Best walks
- Be honest with yourself about the national parks before you drive to them. At Black Canyon of the Gunnison the two trails open to dogs are the Rim Rock Trail and the North Rim Chasm View Nature Trail, plus the paths out to the overlooks. At Mesa Verde it's the trails at Wetherill Mesa, apart from those to Step House and Long House, and the paved areas at Mesa Top Loop and Park Point. In Telluride itself, the rules for dogs on the River Trail and in the Bear Creek Preserve, the town's own lead rule and the lead rules in the surrounding national forest are not confirmed, so check the Town of Telluride and Forest Service pages before you set out and keep a lead on you. Madeline's concierge will recommend dog-friendly outings around Mountain Village.
- When to go
- Plan around the gondola. It runs from 21 May to 25 October 2026 for summer and from 20 November 2026 to 4 April 2027 for winter, so those are the dates when a Mountain Village stay works without a car. Avoid the gap from late October to late November and the weeks after 4 April unless you're happy to drive to town. In winter, check COtrip.org for the traction law before you leave. In warm weather don't leave a dog in the car at Mesa Verde. The park warns the inside of a car can heat by nearly 20 degrees Fahrenheit in ten minutes, even with the windows cracked.

Yes, with a short hotel list. Four hotels on our list take dogs, three in Mountain Village and one in Telluride town, and the free gondola between the two takes pets in about half its cabins. Yes. About 50 percent of the cabins are pet accessible and the ride is free. It runs 6:30 a.m. to midnight from 21 May to 25 October 2026 and from 20 November 2026 to 4 April 2027, and doesn't run between those seasons.
How much do Telluride hotels charge for dogs?+
USD 25 per dog per night at Fairmont Heritage Place, Franz Klammer Lodge. USD 50 a day at Mountain Lodge Telluride, capped at USD 150 a week. USD 175 per stay at Madeline, and USD 250 per pet per stay at Element 52.
Where should I stay in Telluride with a big dog?+

Should I stay in Mountain Village or Telluride town with a dog?+
Mountain Village has three of our four hotels, including the two with the clearest terms, Madeline and Mountain Lodge. Telluride town has one, Element 52, where only a limited number of residences take pets. The gondola links the two in about 12 minutes when it's running.
Are there dog-friendly hotels in Durango, Ouray, Silverton, Crested Butte or Pagosa Springs?+

Is Hotel Columbia in Telluride open?+
No. Hotel Columbia is closed for renovations through 2027. It describes itself as pet friendly, so it's one to look at again once it reopens.
Can I take my dog to Mesa Verde?+
Partly. Dogs on a lead can use the trails at Wetherill Mesa, except those to Step House and Long House, and the roads, parking lots and paved areas at Mesa Top Loop and Park Point. They can't go into any ancestral site, so the cliff dwellings are out. There's a kennel at Morefield Campground on 970-565-2133.

That is not confirmed for any of them. Ouray has five hot springs, three public and two for hotel guests only, and no dog rule is published for them. Ring the one you want before you travel.
Can I take my dog on the Durango and Silverton train?+
No. Only service animals are allowed on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The railroad suggests a daytime boarding facility in Durango and asks you not to leave a dog in a parked car.
