Where can my dog actually go?

The Hamptons with a dog means small dogs, high fees and beaches by the clock. Weight caps of 35 to 45 lbs are normal at the resort end, fees run from USD 45 to USD 100 a night, and summer beach access is set separately by each town and village. Only five hotels are on our list, one each in Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton and Hampton Bays, and one in Greenport on the North Fork. That is a short list and we're not going to dress it up.

The difference between them is how much of the hotel the dog gets. The Roundtree in Amagansett takes dogs in every room and cottage, up to two, and sets out a bed, a water bowl, treats and paw towels. Canoe Place Inn in Hampton Bays has the clearest written rules in the area, with a relief area a few steps from the pet-friendly rooms and dogs not in the restaurants, bars, fitness centre, spa or pool area. Montauk Yacht Club keeps dogs to guest rooms and its designated walking areas. Both of those say a dog can never be left alone, so the dog comes with you or you arrange a sitter, and Canoe Place will recommend local ones. Mill House Inn in East Hampton Village calls itself a dog-friendly bed and breakfast and takes dogs in many of its rooms, but publishes no terms. No hotel on this list publishes that dogs can join you at breakfast, in a restaurant or at the bar.

On fees, Hotel Moraine charges USD 45 a night, The Roundtree USD 50 per dog per night, Canoe Place Inn USD 75 a night and Montauk Yacht Club USD 100 per dog per day. Hotel Moraine caps at 35 lbs (about 15.9 kg), Montauk Yacht Club at 40 lbs (about 18.1 kg) and Canoe Place at 45 lbs (about 20.4 kg), and Canoe Place charges USD 500 a night for a dog over its limit. The Roundtree is the only one with published terms and no weight cap, which makes it the first call for a big dog. Give them your dog's size when you send notice. Larger dogs have very few confirmed options out here.

Don't assume one beach rule covers the whole South Fork. East Hampton Village keeps dogs off its beaches from 9am to 6pm between 15 May and 15 September, and that is the Village only. The rules for the East Hampton Town beaches at Amagansett and Montauk, and for the Southampton beaches, are not confirmed here, so check with the town before you head for the sand. We have nothing listed yet in Southampton Village, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Westhampton Beach or on Shelter Island. Baron's Cove in Sag Harbor has closed for renovation ahead of a relaunch as Faraway Sag Harbor, and it isn't listed until it's confirmed open.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

East Hampton Village beaches
From 15 May to 15 September no dog may be on any village beach between 9am and 6pm. Outside those hours dogs must be on a hand-held lead within 300 feet of any road end on the ocean beaches, and you must keep control and clean up. This is the Village of East Hampton only, which is where Mill House Inn sits.
Every other beach
The dog rules for East Hampton Town beaches (Amagansett, Montauk, Springs and Wainscott) and for Southampton Town and Southampton Village beaches are not confirmed here. Don't assume the Village hours apply. Check the town's own page or ring before you go. The same goes for Montauk Point and Hither Hills state parks, where no pet rule is confirmed.
Weight limits
One dog up to 35 lbs (about 15.9 kg) at Hotel Moraine, up to 40 lbs (about 18.1 kg) at Montauk Yacht Club and one dog up to 45 lbs (about 20.4 kg) at Canoe Place Inn. The Roundtree publishes no cap and takes two dogs. Mill House Inn confirms size at booking.
Fees
USD 45 a night at Hotel Moraine, USD 50 per dog per night at The Roundtree, USD 75 a night at Canoe Place Inn and USD 100 per dog per day at Montauk Yacht Club. Mill House Inn doesn't publish a fee. Canoe Place charges USD 500 a night for a dog in a room that isn't pet-friendly or a dog over 45 lbs.
Never left alone
Canoe Place Inn and Montauk Yacht Club both say a dog can't be left alone in the room, and Montauk Yacht Club extends that to anywhere on the property. Canoe Place has no dog walking or sitting on site but will recommend local walkers and sitters. Hotel Moraine asks that the dog is out of the room during housekeeping. The Roundtree and Mill House Inn don't publish a rule, so ask.
Getting there
The pet rules for the Long Island Rail Road and the Hampton Jitney are not confirmed here. Check with the MTA before taking the train, and ring the Jitney on 631-283-4600 before you book a seat with a dog.
Shelter Island ferries
South Ferry runs between North Haven on the Sag Harbor side and Shelter Island every 10 to 15 minutes, with no reservations, cash only, at USD 18 one way or USD 25 same-day return. North Ferry runs between Greenport and Shelter Island, with last boats from Sunday to Thursday at 11:45pm from Shelter Island and midnight from Greenport. Neither publishes a pet rule, so ask at the slip.
Hotels that don't take dogs
Journey East Hampton takes no pets from 1 May to 30 September. The Hampton Maid in Hampton Bays is a pet-free property, and Silver Sands in Greenport takes service animals only. Worth knowing before you fall for the photos.
Best walks
The ocean beaches of East Hampton Village are the one confirmed beach walk: any time outside 9am to 6pm from 15 May to 15 September, on a lead within 300 feet of a road end. Montauk Yacht Club has its own designated dog walking areas on the grounds at Lake Montauk, and Canoe Place Inn has a relief area by the rooms. The Roundtree is on Main Street in Amagansett with the beach close by, though the town's dog hours there are not confirmed. We haven't confirmed the dog rules at Montauk Point or Hither Hills state parks, so check before you drive out.
When to go
Outside 15 May to 15 September if the beach is the point, because that is when the East Hampton Village beaches drop the 9am to 6pm restriction. In summer, plan the beach for early morning or after 6pm and keep the middle of the day for the village. Whichever month you choose, check the town's dog hours for Amagansett, Montauk and the Southampton beaches before you go, as each sets its own.

Neither South Ferry nor North Ferry publishes a pet rule, so ask before you board. South Ferry runs every 10 to 15 minutes from North Haven, cash only, and North Ferry runs from Greenport.
